Default Mob leader chokes daughter for making rival sign

Quote:
A senior member of the Kawerau Mongrel Mob choked and stomped on his teenage daughter after he saw a cellphone photo of her making the sign of a rival gang with her fingers.

In a violent and prolonged attack that left her bleeding and badly bruised, Raymond Iveagh Jury choked his 13-year-old daughter by squeezing her neck and punching her around the head and body. When she ended up on the ground, he kicked and stomped on her throat.

In the Whakatane District Court, Jury pleaded guilty to assaulting a child and was remanded in custody for sentence on October 14, the Whakatane Beacon reported.

Charges relating to an alleged second attack three days later were withdrawn by the police.

Judge Paul Geoghegan warned the 49-year-old Kawerau man it was highly likely he would receive a prison sentence.

He said it was a vicious assault on a girl who was entitled to feel that her father should protect her.

The violence on June 21 was sparked by a cellphone photo shown to Jury by the girl's brother, with whom she had just been arguing.

It showed her completing a Crips sign. The Crips gang is affiliated to Black Power, the main rival to the Mongrel Mob.

Jury, a long-standing member of the Mongrel Mob, became enraged by the photo and questioned the girl on whether she was a "nigger" – a term commonly used by Mongrel Mob members to refer to Black Power members.

She answered "no" but Jury began to physically and verbally attack her, punching, kicking and choking her while saying such things as "next time I hear you being a nigger I will kill you".

The girl's nose piercing was ripped out and she was left with a fat bleeding lip and multiple bruises.

It took her a week to pluck up the courage to lay a complaint with the police against her father, who does not live with the family but visits often to see his children.

She told police the family had suffered a significant amount of physical abuse spanning her lifetime.

Default Rise in beggars hounding shoppers

Bonnie McGregor didn't mind giving a man money when he approached her car claiming he had been mugged and needed to get home.

But she doubts she'll ever give cash to a stranger again after the same man made a similar move the following night.

The Titirangi resident was in a takeaway drive-through outside LynnMall at about 6.30pm last Tuesday with her one-year-old son Presley sitting in the back seat when a man knocked on her window.

"He told me he'd been mugged and I told him to go and report it to the police but he said there was no point because the culprit had already run away.

"I believed him anyway because he was speaking very fast like he was distressed and he was quite well dressed."

McGregor says the man looked to be in his 40s and of Indian descent, dressed in cream coloured trousers and a windbreaker jacket.

PM delivers moving Holocaust memorial speech

John Key's about to sit down to lunch ahead of his big state of the nation speech in Auckland.

But this morning it was a very different occasion, as he attended an event in Epsom to mark the UN's Holocaust Memorial Day.

Newstalk ZB's Allan Lee says it was a moving event, with Mr Key speaking passionately and without notes.

He says it's personal for the Prime Minister - his mother was an Austrian Jew and was forced to leave as a result of the Nazi invasion.

"She never wanted to talk about it and he told the audience today that his mother, whenever he tried to question her about it, she would just not answer. So he's never really found out the full story of what happened to her."

Mr Lee says Mr Key also spoke about Holocaust, saying people who deny it happened can only be described as mad.

UN urges New Zealand to reduce Racism in criminal justice

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has urged NZ to intensify efforts to reduce structural discrimination in the criminal justice system

“This is encouraging news” says Kim Workman, spokesperson for the Robson Hanan Trust and Rethinking Crime and Punishment. “We recommended to the UN Committee that it ask the New Zealand government to research the extent to which the over-representation of Māori in the criminal justice system is due to racial bias in arrests, prosecutions and sentences and develop a strategy to address the issue.”

National interest in Dunedin Nazi sale

Nazi memorabilia being sold in Dunedin today is attracting nationwide interest.

Pre-1945 German military and Nazi items will be auctioned at Hayward's Auction House. Items include Nazi flags, helmets, belts and pins.

Australasian Union of Jewish Students Dunedin branch president Ben Isaacs said the sale of anything with a swastika was harmful to the memory of those who died as a result of Nazi persecution.

''The decision to run this auction shows a lack of taste and sensitivity to those who lived through these atrocities and their families,'' he said.

''It is a slap in the face to the Dunedin Jewish community and New Zealand Jewish community.

''This is not something that should have a place in New Zealand,'' Mr Isaacs said.

Tuvalu climate change family win NZ residency appeal

A Tuvalu family has been granted New Zealand residency after claiming it would be affected by climate change if it returned home.

It is the first successful application for residency on humanitarian grounds in which climate change has featured, but the Immigration and Protection Tribunal said the family had strong ties to New Zealand.

Environmental law expert Vernon Rive said the tribunal would be keen to avoid opening the floodgates to other climate change refugee claims.

The international Refugee Convention does not recognise victims of climate change as refugees.

"I do see the decision as being quite significant," Rive said.

"But it doesn't provide an open ticket for people from all the places that are impacted by climate change. It's still a very stringent test and it requires exceptional circumstances of a humanitarian nature."

The Tuvalu family moved to New Zealand in 2007, but has had no legal status in the country since 2009.

Their two children, aged 3 and 5, were born in New Zealand.

The father is a qualified teacher but has been a maintenance worker at a fast-food chain because he couldn't register as a teacher.

His several applications for work visas were refused.

In November 2012, the family lodged claims for refugee and protected persons status.

In March last year, their claims were dismissed and last month the tribunal turned down their appeals because they did not meet the refugee convention.

They successfully appealed against that decision on humanitarian grounds.

In a decision issued last month, the tribunal found "exceptional circumstances ... which would make it unjust and unduly harsh" for the family to return to Tuvalu.

Immigration lawyer Trevor Zohs, who represented the family with Carole Curtis, told the Herald on Sunday the effects of climate change should be recognised.

"A lot of people are affected by illness when they go back, they get sick from drinking polluted water. The island is porous so even when the water is not flooding, it penetrates the rocks under the land."

Appealing the decision on humanitarian grounds allowed discretion to be widened so the tribunal could consider whether it would be unjust to send a person back to their country. "Obviously their character, the fact they're going to contribute to New Zealand and that they have a connection to New Zealand is also taken into account," Zohs said.

The family has three generations of relatives living in New Zealand.

Kiribati man Ioane Teitiota's bid to become the world's first climate change refugee was rejected this year.

The 37-year-old moved to New Zealand with his wife in 2007 after deciding their life on the low-lying Kiribati island Tarawa was no longer sustainable because of rising seas.

He sought leave to appeal the tribunal's decision at the High Court, but that was dismissed.

In his ruling, Justice John Priestley said: "At a stroke, millions of people who are facing medium-term economic deprivation, or the immediate consequences of natural disasters or warfare would be entitled to protection under the Refugee Convention."

An already tumultuous New Zealand election campaign took another dramatic turn less than a week before polling day when the prime minister, John Key, responded angrily to claims by the American journalist Glenn Greenwald that he had been "deceiving the public" over assurances on spying.

Greenwald, who is visiting New Zealand at the invitation of the German internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom, says he will produce documents provided by the NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden that prove the New Zealand government approved mass surveillance of its residents by the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB), New Zealand's equivalent of the NSA.

Dotcom, who is sought for extradition from New Zealand by the US on copyright charges relating to his now defunct Megaupload file-storage site, is hosting an event in Auckland on Monday called The Moment of Truth, which doubles as a rally for the Dotcom-founded Internet party.

Greenwald has promised to produce his evidence at the event, while Dotcom is pledging to show further links between Key and Hollywood relating to his own case. Adding to the spectacle, Julian Assange is expected to beam in via video link from the Ecuadorian embassy in London, while Dotcom has hinted that Snowden may also appear on the big screen from Moscow.

In media interviews, Key has repeatedly dismissed Greenwald as "Dotcom's little henchman".

Speaking on TVNZ's Q+A programme, he acknowledged that the government had in 2012 considered a "mass cyber-protection" proposal, which he said was "really a Norton antivirus at a very high level", but rejected it. Greenwald, he argued, would therefore have seen incomplete material.

"This is what happens when you hack in to illegal information, when you wander down to New Zealand six days before an election trying to do Dotcom's bidding – what happens is you get half the story," said Key.

He said he was ready to declassify secret documents to support his argument. "There is no ambiguity here. There is no and there never has been any mass surveillance."

Greenwald responded by saying: "I absolutely stand by everything I've said." He told 3 News: "They did far more than look at the idea; they adopted the idea and took steps to make it a reality."

He added: "I've done reporting of surveillance all over the world and a lot of governments haven't liked what I've said, but I've never seen a head of government lose their dignity and get down in the mud and start chucking names to discredit the journalist in order to discredit the journalism."

Greenwald, a former Guardian journalist, has authored hundreds of stories based on leaks from Edward Snowden exposing the breadth of surveillance undertaken by the NSA and its partners in the Five-Eyes alliance, which includes New Zealand. The work was recognised with a Pulitzer prize in April 2014.

Even before the spying controversy, the Key campaign was bedevilled by scandal, with a senior cabinet minister forced to resign following the publication of a book based on hacked emails that revealed links between the ruling centre-right National party and an attack-blogger.

Key and his party have so far emerged mostly unscathed in the polls, however, and remain favourite to win a third term next Saturday.

New Zealand will hold a referendum next year on changing the national flag if the re-elected prime minister, John Key, has his way.

Key said on Monday he would press ahead with plans for a referendum following Saturday’s election triumph.

The centre-right leader said he wanted the ballot next year on whether to ditch the current flag, which features the union jack in one corner.

“I’d like to get on with it, to me I’d like to do it as a 2015 issue,” Key told commercial station Radio Live.

“I’m obviously a big supporter of the change, I think there are a lot of strong arguments in favour of the change.”

Key has previously said he would prefer a new flag featuring the silver fern on a black background.

Sporting teams such as the All Blacks already use the symbol and Key argues it is instantly recognisable as representing New Zealand in the same way the maple leaf is a distinctly Canadian icon.

The existing flag was first used in 1869 and formally adopted in 1902. Its supporters say that New Zealanders have fought and died under it for generations and a change would dishonour their memory.

But critics argue it is too easily confused with those of other former British colonies such as Australia.

Key, who increased his share of the vote to convincingly win a third term on Saturday, favours maintaining ties with Britain’s monarchy, despite his support for a new flag.

Nazi replica hat removed from Invercargill shop window

An Invercargill store owner has removed a hat with a Nazi swastika from a front window position, but Jewish leaders and the Human Rights Commission say the continued sale of such items is deplorable and distressing.

The shop owner said on Monday he had been away on Friday when the World War II German Luftwaffe beret, featuring a swastika, was put in a window display.

He said he was unaware it featured a swastika and removed the hat from the window display on Monday.

He said the hat was a replica that had come from a wholesaler. The primary customers for such items were historical collectors, he said.

Default Auckland University hate-crimes professor leaves job after remark about Jews

Quote:
A University of Auckland professor is to leave his job after an anti-Semitism row sparked by a letter to the Waikato Times.

Acclaimed hate crimes expert Professor Scott Poynting compared an Israeli company employing Palestinians to a German company employing Jews. The commentary rankled various groups, including the New Zealand Jewish Council and a fellow academic, who complained to the university, branding the professor's letter to the editor as anti-Semitic.

New Zealand votes to keep its national flag in £12m referendum

New Zealand has voted to keep the current design of its national flag, according to preliminary referendum results.

The country held a nationwide contest to design a new national flag in May last year and the referendum was to choose between the current design and a new silver fern motif.

After more than 2.1 million votes were cast, early results have given the original flag a 56.6 per cent win, compared to 43.2 per cent for the changed version.

However, despite the museum’s historical narrative intentions – the flag has created fierce debate. Some members of the public support the Museum’s initiative and others are calling for the flag to be buried or burnt.

Concerns over anti-Semitic material distributed in Dunedin

Leaflets dropped in Dunedin letterboxes promoting anti-Semitic material are an insult to Holocaust survivors, the New Zealand Jewish Council says.

The handwritten, photocopied leaflet encouraged residents to download a book that denies the Holocaust.

It appeared in letterboxes in Opoho on Wednesday.

The West Auckland shop is selling swastika knives and rings, uniforms with Nazi insignia, and SS helmets.

Neo-Nazi website hack reveals far-right users in New Zealand as young as 15

Nov 12, 2019

Several New Zealanders were active users of a now-defunct neo-Nazi message board which had its data leaked last week - including one who says they were aged 15.

The views uncovered on the site have caused concern, but Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon also said he "can't say they are surprising". The New Zealand Jewish Council has described them as “revolting”.

Iron March was a far-right message board and "fascist social network" which was hacked and taken down by unknown individuals in November 2017.

New Zealand launches "Racism is No Joke" campaign

WELLINGTON, July 16 2020

New Zealand Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon has launched the "Racism is No Joke" campaign to raise awareness of racism against Chinese and other Asian New Zealanders.

"Since COVID-19, we've seen an increase in racism against Chinese and other Asian New Zealanders ... This campaign will address online racism that often manifests itself in anti-Asian memes and jokes," Foon said in a statement on Thursday.

"These are completely unacceptable, and I know that most New Zealanders don't find them funny either. We want to raise awareness of the impact this racism is having on Chinese and Asian communities and encourage people to stop sharing Asian 'jokes'," Foon said.
