PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday lost his parliamentary majority after major election gains by a newly formed left-wing alliance and a surge from the far right, in a stunning blow to his plans for major second-term reform.

The result from Sunday’s second round poll threw French politics into turmoil, raising the prospect of a paralyzed legislature or messy coalitions with Macron forced to reach out to new allies.

Macron, 44, now also risks being distracted by domestic problems as he seeks to play a prominent role in putting an end to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and as a key statesman in the EU.

Macron’s “Together” coalition will still be the biggest party in the next National Assembly. But with 245 seats, according to full interior ministry results announced in the early hours of Monday, it is well short of the 289 seats needed for an absolute majority in the 577-member chamber.

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party made huge gains and will send 89 MPs to the new parliament, up from eight in the previous parliament, making it the biggest rightwing force in parliament ahead of the traditional right The Republicans (LR).

Le Pen, who lost to Macron in the presidential election, was re-elected as MP in her stronghold of Hénin-Beaumont, in northern France.

“The Macron adventure has reached its end,” Le Pen said. The group of National Rally lawmakers “will be by far the biggest of the history of our political family.”

Acting National Rally president Jordan Bardella compared his party’s showing to a “tsunami.” “Tonight’s message is that the French people made from Emmanuel Macron a minority president,” he said on TF1 television.

(JTA) — A group of men violently assaulted a Jewish man while he was putting up campaign posters for his wife, who is running for a legislative seat in Strasbourg, France, the victim told police.

Initially, two men who approached Liron Rozenhaft, 41, on Thursday called him a “dirty Jew” after reading the name of his wife, Audrey Rozenhaft, on the posters, Le Parisien reported on Friday. She is running as a candidate for the center-right Republicans party in the 1st constituency of Bas-Rhin, which includes the city’s center and multiple outer districts, in elections scheduled for June 23.

If French President Emmanuel Macron thought that his re-election this past May against right-wing populist challenger Marine Le Pen was a license to keep forging ahead with a globalist agenda, it turns out that he was badly miscalculated. While French voters may have been reluctant to hand executive control over to Le Pen, they seized the opportunity to recalibrate the balance of power away from Macron’s globalist establishment status quo with last weekend’s parliamentary elections.

Although Macron’s centrist Together coalition retained the most seats among the parties elected to the National Assembly on Sunday, the president lost the absolute majority which had allowed him to freely ram through his agenda into law. Until now, whatever Macron wanted or telegraphed – whether it was Covid jab mandates and digital passes or censorship under the guise of ‘national security’ – his party simply converted into law. And there was nothing that opponents could do about it other than complain hopelessly.

The EU’s punitive measures ‘sanctioned the French more than they sanctioned Russia,’ she told French media

Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s right-wing National Rally party, has dismissed EU sanctions against Russia as “completely inefficient.”

Speaking to French broadcaster BMF TV on Sunday, Le Pen said the “sanctions had enriched Russia; they have sanctioned the French more than they had sanctioned Russia.”. The right-wing opposition leader also added that, due to Western sanctions, France had been forced to buy oil from India, a country that itself depends on oil exports from Russia.

Her comments come as the EU plans to phase out Russian gas by 2030 in response to Moscow’s military offensive in Ukraine. In early June, the bloc adopted a new package of sanctions that included a partial embargo on Russian oil imports.

A National Rally (RN) candidate and his entourage were attacked by a gang of Antifa youths late on Friday evening, and the victim has condemned local politicians who have failed to condemn the attack or offer support to those injured in the assault.

Pierre Le Camus, the 22-year-old RN candidate for the 2nd constituency of Gironde in the last legislative elections, was severely beaten alongside both his brother and his friend, after a dozen young students he identified as “belonging to the far-left, anti-fascist movement” recognized him on the terrace of the Mushroom café, near Place Gambetta.

(JTA) — Consecutive French presidents have followed Jacques Chirac’s 1995 lead in acknowledging their country’s complicity in the Holocaust.

But none did so more intimately than Emmanuel Macron on Sunday in Pithiviers near Paris, when he described the feelings of betrayal and shock felt by French Jews whom French authorities delivered to be murdered.

“In those introductory chambers to the camps,” Macron said of places like Pithiviers, an old train station used to keep and dispatch Jews to Auschwitz, “French-Jewish families whispered words in Yiddish to reassure themselves, saying that France would never do this to them. Yet that’s what France did.”

Macron was speaking at the inauguration of a new Holocaust museum in Pithiviers, a town 50 miles south of Paris whose train station was the second-largest point of deportation of Jews to Auschwitz. There, Macron reiterated acknowledgement that French authorities had been complicit in the murder of about 77,000 local Jews. He also vowed to continue to fight antisemitism today.

At the Paris military event in honor of Bastille Day on July 14, infantry troops from nine countries – France’s NATO allies Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria – were the first to march along the Champs-Elysees. The French state-run radio broadcaster RFI called this event a “parade under the banner of Ukraine.”

By inviting states from the Bucharest Nine to open the celebrations, “France is demonstrating its support for these countries as members of the EU and NATO,” the French Ministry of Defense stressed. “The countries in the Bucharest Nine are now concerned about Russian aggression and the immediate threat it poses {to them}.”

Colonel Vincent Mingue, commander of an 800-strong French-Belgian detachment stationed in Romania, said: “We must be ready for all scenarios,” explaining that there is no sense at the moment of how far the conflict in Ukraine will go.

Such a vague statement from a French army colonel, combined with the sensational statements Macron made about France’s transition to a “war economy” at the opening of the Eurosatory exhibition in Villepinte, is cause for concern.

But now Macron, who had always been far from military affairs and has butted heads with the army’s top brass on many occasions, has begun to position himself as an ultra-militarist, calling for the introduction of a ‘war economy’. This is quite an interesting and abrupt change of persona.

Given the reduction in Russian oil and gas supplies, not to mention the anti-Russian sanctions that have hit the French economy like ‘hara-kiri’, as aptly put by Marine Le Pen, the idea of transitioning to a war economy seems less than wise for the French population. Macron’s disapproval rating is growing rapidly. In a recent survey conducted by the IFOP international polling and market research firm, 63% of the respondents said they disapproved of the job the president is doing.

PARIS — As he says goodbye to his top ally in Europe, French President Emmanuel Macron is bracing for the worst.

Macron and his closest confidante in the European sphere, Italian PM Mario Draghi, were once the steady duo that coalesced across EU policy areas as they saw eye to eye on a range of issues — from fiscal policy to the critical issue of European defense.

Under Draghi, Rome and Paris became closer than ever as the two leaders signed a bilateral treaty last year in a lavish hall of the Quirinale palace. After years of Franco-Italian diplomatic tensions, here was a partnership — perhaps when Europe needed it most — that fought common battles on the international stage, from tackling rules on capping the price of gas to building consensus on assisting war-torn Ukraine.

But the honeymoon might be over.

In a stunning ouster, precipitated by the anti-establishment 5Star movement, and brought to its spectacular finale by the Italian right, Mario Draghi resigned on July 21, throwing the country into turmoil. Italy is heading to the ballot box in September and a right-wing coalition led by Giorgia Meloni is leading the polls.

“I am totally depressed,” a French minister told POLITICO last week, commenting on the overthrow of Draghi and the rise of Meloni. “I am a big fan of Draghi,” the minister said.

What’s on the horizon is stirring deep fears in the French establishment as the downfall of the Italian premier comes at a perilous moment for Europe — whose unity on everything from Ukraine to climate change could be tested by the rise of populists.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne on Thursday announced the creation of a new position of ambassador for LGBTQ rights in efforts to fight discrimination across the world.

Borne spoke while visiting an LGBTQ center in Orleans, central France, on the 40th anniversary of the decriminalization of homosexuality in the country.

Borne said an ambassador will be named by the end of the year and will notably be in charge of pushing for universal decriminalization of homosexuality and trans identity.

She also announced the creation of a 3 million-euro ($3.05 million) fund to finance ten new LGBT+ centers, in addition to the 35 already existing in France.

Kiev might get up to 12 Caesar howitzers from Paris that were originally destined for Denmark, Le Monde reports

France is reportedly preparing a new weapons delivery to Ukraine, which might include between six and 12 Caesar self-propelled howitzers, the French newspaper Le Monde reported on Saturday. The artillery pieces were originally intended for Denmark, but Copenhagen said not all of them met the required standards, the paper alleged.

The deal was the result of “lengthy negotiations” between France, Ukraine, and Denmark, Le Monde said, adding that Kiev had initially requested 15 howitzers. According to Le Monde, French President Emmanuel Macron opposed the idea of supplying Ukraine from the country’s army stocks, since Paris had already sent 18 Caesars to Kiev, which amounted to almost a quarter of France’s own arsenal of 76 such artillery pieces.

Instead, France decided to supply Ukraine with howitzers that were originally ordered by Denmark back in 2017, Le Monde said, adding that Copenhagen agreed to give up on the purchase since the artillery pieces ordered were still undergoing technical validation, and at least some of them did not meet the required specifications set out by the Danish side.

A dozen people with links to a French far-right group went on trial on Tuesday, accused of plotting to assassinate President Emmanuel Macron and commit a string of other attacks.

Prosecutors say the 13 members of the Barjols group conspired to engineer a putsch, which involved a plan for an attack on Macron during a public appearance in 2018.

The defendants are 11 men and two women, aged between 26 and 66.

Citing evidence collected online, from telephone conversations and meetings, prosecutors say the suspects also planned to kill migrants and attack mosques.

None of the plots allegedly prepared by the suspects ever came to anything.

As a result, prosecutors downgraded some of the initial charges over the course of their four-year investigation.
