Bulgaria began building a fence on its border with Turkey

Turkish Press - 13.03.2014

Bulgaria began on Wednesday building a fence on its border with Turkey to end illegal border crossings into the country. The idea of building of a 30-kilometer (18 mile) wire fence has gained traction since late last year due to the government’s concerns over the Syrian refugee influx. A recent activity report released by Bulgaria's Defense Ministry said 87 military personnel began to put the wire fence on parts of the 30 km long route that was cleared and prepared for the building work.

Exclusive - Bulgarian nationalists may topple government over Russia sanctions

By Matthias Williams and Tsvetelia Tsolova | Reuters 10 hours ago

By Matthias Williams and Tsvetelia Tsolova

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgaria's nationalist Attack party will work to topple the government if Sofia backs a new round of Western sanctions against Russia over its annexation of Crimea, the party's leader told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

Attack holds the balance of power in the Bulgarian parliament, and its threat is an extreme example of the domestic pressures European governments face in taking a position on the worst crisis in East-West relations since the Cold War.

If the party pulls the plug on Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski's minority coalition government, it could tip the European Union's poorest member state back into political instability. Months of street protests felled one government last year and almost toppled its successor, at a time when the country was struggling to revive economic growth.

Bulgarian leaders' position in relation to the Ukraine crisis is especially precarious. On the one hand, the country has pushed for closer ties with the EU bloc, which it joined seven years ago. On the other hand, it is almost entirely dependent on Russian energy supplies, and many Bulgarians feel a deep affinity for their giant neighbour across the Black Sea.

Attack, which is a noisy critic of the United States and Bulgaria's NATO membership, is the only Bulgarian party to openly champion Russia's intervention in the Ukraine.

"If the current Bulgarian government supports them (tougher sanctions), I will take a firm opposition line towards it and I will work for its toppling," party chairman Volen Siderov said in an interview in his office in the Bulgarian capital.

"Then we will have to ask ourselves the question what government and what majority will come after it, whether it will

be the same, or whether it can be changed," he said.

"It is a problem for the voters, who have to wake up and finally understand that the government in Bulgaria should have an independent policy and put an end to colonialism that we have been forced into."

As if to underscore Bulgarian ties to Russia, Siderov has antique guns and swords fixed on his office wall - some of them relics of Russia's wars against Turkey in the 19th century that helped Bulgaria throw off 500 years of Ottoman rule.

TAKING A STAND

As well as the threat of Attack withdrawing its support, the ruling Socialist party also risks angering voters in the European elections in May. The elections are seen as a key test for the survival of a government that has already faced down three confidence votes since taking power last year.

A Gallup poll last week underlined the country's divided loyalties: 30 percent of Bulgarians supported Ukraine joining the EU, while 27 percent supported Ukraine forging closer links with Russia instead.

The Socialist party is a direct descendant of the communists who governed Bulgaria before the fall of the Berlin Wall, when the country was seen as Moscow's most pliable ally. Many of its core supporters are pro-Russia.

Its conflicted position has led the government to send mixed signals about its intentions. Bulgaria allowed the first round of sanctions against Russia and twice took part in navy drills with a U.S. warship in the Black Sea. The prime minister said the country would not support further sanctions, but then also suggested Bulgaria would not veto them if imposed.

In any case, a new round of punitive measures might be fiercely resisted by many of the EU's other ex-communist nations, who are fearful of Russia's aggression but have the most to lose by imposing sanctions.

"Bulgaria needs to impose a veto," said Siderov, a white-haired former journalist, who was charged with hooliganism earlier this month after an alleged row with a female French diplomat on a plane. "It has the right to do that and then the European Union will not be able to impose sanctions," he added.

"And silently, and not officially, the German and French representatives will say "well done for saving us", because their turnover with Russia is in tens of billions of euros."

ZOG putting pressure on Bulgaria to halt important South Stream project. Bulgaria says its economy can't be held hostage because of US initiated trouble in Ukraine.

EU: Bulgaria to stop work on South Stream pipeline

June 3, 2014

European Union authorities have asked Bulgaria to suspend work on Gazprom’s South Stream gas pipeline on the grounds that the project breaks EU law, a step that threatens to inflame tensions between Russia and the 28-country bloc.

The latest move against Moscow, announced by the European Commission on Tuesday, follows progress late on Monday towards resolving a pricing row that has threatened to disrupt Russian gas shipments via Ukraine.

But the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, says South Stream breaks EU rules that prohibit gas suppliers from also controlling pipeline access and it has put on hold the approval process for the project.

Bulgaria, historically close to Russia, has decided to start construction as a national priority.

“Whilst discussions with the Bulgarian authorities are taking place and until there is full compliance with EU law, we have asked the Bulgarian authorities to suspend the project,” Commission spokeswoman Chantal Hughes told Reuters.

She also said the Commission had sent the Bulgarian authorities a letter of formal notice asking for information, a preliminary measure that could eventually lead to full infringement proceedings and possible fines.
Bulgaria’s energy minister, a staunch supporter of the project as a means of bolstering energy security and creating jobs, said he did not believe Bulgaria would be sanctioned and called for dialogue to continue with Brussels, Reuters reports.

Bulgaria halts work on gas pipeline after US talks

Bulgaria has previously said it is being targeted as a means of retaliating against Russia

Bulgaria is to halt work on its Russian-backed South Stream gas pipeline following criticism from the EU and US.

Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski announced that he had "ordered all work to be stopped".

"We will decide on further developments following consultations with Brussels," he said after meeting with US senators.

The Gazprom-financed pipeline would ship gas to western Europe via the Balkans, thus avoiding Ukraine.

The European Commission had sent Bulgarian authorities a letter at the start of the month, asking them to suspend work on the project.

The EC claimed Bulgaria may have broken EU public procurement laws by choosing local and Russian bidders.

Bulgaria has previously said it is being targeted by Brussels as a means of retaliating against Russia over the situation in Ukraine.

If built, the pipeline would deliver 63 billion cubic metres of natural gas a year, via Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Slovenia before entering Italy.

Construction work on the pipeline began in Bulgaria in October 2013.

Default NATO ships enter Black Sea, head to Bulgaria

NATO ships from the Standing NATO Mine Counter-Measures Group 2 (SNMCMG-2) entered the Black Sea, a military-diplomatic source said.

"The flagship SNMCMG-2, missile frigate Avier, minesweeper Rimini (both come from the Italian Navy), Greek corvette Machitis and Turkish minesweeper Akchey traveled through Black Sea straits and entered the Black Sea," the source said.

According to the source, the NATO ships are heading to the Bulgarian port of Burgas, where they plan to participate in joint exercises with the navy of Bulgaria.

The time period, during which warships of non-Black-Sea countries are allowed to stay in the waters of the Black Sea is limited to 21 days, in accordance with the Montreux Convention, adopted in 1936. NATO has repeatedly violated the terms of staying in the Black Sea, to which Russia had to react.

Sofia Gay Pride march chased away from Vasil Levski monument

Yesterday's Sofia Gay Pride march was stopped from approaching the Bulgarian capital's Vasil Levski monument by nationalist party Ataka representatives.

The seventh edition of "Sofia Pride" began yesterday at the Monument to the Soviet Army with about 100 participants.

Hours before that, hundreds of police personel blocked the city center to avoid collisions.

The organizers of the gay pride parade were disappointed that despite their letters asking for support from different parties, only the Greens and the Bulgarian Left Party reached out for them.

Some participants even suggested that the procession should pass along party headquarters.

The local LGBTI community may be also angry with Sofia's mayor Yordanka Fandakova because she decided not to attend. The only politician who was present was Reformist Victor Liov. He called for tolerance and sought support from politicians who share the ideas of freedom and love.

On 3 July, Ambassadors of some Sofia-based embassies issued a statement in support of Sofia Pride, which was published on the website of the British embassy in Sofia. "We would like to convey our support to all people who either actively participate in or back this year's Sofia Pride on 5 July 2014. Promoting the principle of equal treatment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people is an important aspect of a tolerant and respectful civil society. No one should ever be discriminated against on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity. By signing this statement, we would like to stress that any democratic society should stand up for open-mindedness towards LGBTI people'' the statement says.

The statement was signed by:

H. E. Mr. Jonathan Allen, Ambassador of the United Kingdom
H. E. Mr. Tom J.M. van Oorschot, Ambassador of the Netherlands
H. E. Mrs. Anick Van Calster, Ambassador of Belgium
H. E. Mr. Xavier Lapeyre de Cabanes, Ambassador of France
H. E. Mrs. Marcie B. Ries, Ambassador of the United States of America
H. E. Mr. Harri Salmi, Ambassador of Finland

Bulgaria needs to tell the EU to Fuck off

Bulgaria, Russia push for pipeline blocked by EU

Posted: Monday, July 7, 2014 10:10 am | Updated: 1:09 pm, Mon Jul 7, 2014.

Associated Press | 0 comments

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) — Bulgaria and Russia on Monday voiced hope that work on the Russia-led South Stream gas pipeline project, which had been blocked by the European Union, can be resumed.

Last month, Bulgaria, an EU member, suspended work on the pipeline after the EU executive commission said Bulgaria hadn't respected internal market rules covering the award of public contracts. rubbish 'excuse'. EU got orders from Washington

Bulgarian Prime Minister Oresharski said the pipeline project is very important to his country and its implementation will be resumed within the European legal framework. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who was visiting, called on the EU to restart dialogue with Russia on the pipeline project, adding that construction is still on deadline.

Oresharski said Bulgaria has addressed the issues the EU had raised and believes they will be resolved.

Since the outbreak of the Ukraine crisis, Bulgaria's Socialist-led government has been trying to balance its allegiance to the EU and its almost total dependence on Russian gas.

The EU has taken aim at South Stream, which is being led by Russia's state gas company Gazprom. The pipeline will allow Russia to send gas to Southern Europe via a route under the Black Sea, bypassing Ukraine as a transit country and consolidating Russia's energy grip in that part of Europe. But Bulgaria, which stands to benefit both from improved energy security and from gas transit fees, staunchly supports the project.

Lavrov expressed hope that the dialogue between Moscow and the EU on South Stream will be restarted "because there is every reason to believe a mutually acceptable result can be achieved."

"We are appealing to the European Commission to resume contact and we hope that the talks can be successful," Lavrov told reporters after talks with his Bulgarian counterpart Kristian Vigenin. "We are expecting that the talks with the European Commission will be unfrozen."

Overwhelmed by an influx of mostly Syrian immigrants, Bulgaria has taken steps to secure its EU border including building a barbed-wire fence but now faces criticism from rights groups.

The 30-kilometre fence, standing three meters high and fortified with razor wire coils, was completed this week.

Covering the least visible section of Bulgarias 275-kilometre border with Turkey, it aims to stem a flow of refugees that saw more than 11,000 people enter the country illegally last year 10 times the annual figure before the Syrian conflict.

The sudden influx caused a humanitarian crisis in Bulgaria, already the poorest member of the EU, as asylum seekers were crammed into deserted army barracks and tents in the middle of winter with no heating, basic sanitation or food.

But the small Balkan countrys attempts to tackle the problem have also been a matter of concern, rights agencies say.

Amnesty International condemned Bulgaria and Greece another EU neighbour of Turkey, which has become a key transit point for Syrian refugees to Europe for repeatedly rejecting refugees.

Bulgarian PM: Crimes against Turks remain unpunished

Dec 29, 2014

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AA) - Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said Monday that people who committed oppression and persecution against Bulgarias Turks and Muslims during pre-1990 communist regime remain unpunished.

In a Facebook post, Borisov published a report titled, To overcome the inhuman treatment and the applied oppression against Turks and Muslims.

Borisov, who came to power in November 2014, said that the biggest crime was the attempt to erase evidence.

The premier said that Turks were given freedom, but in exchange they were requested not to call those responsible for the crimes to be held accountable.

He hinted without giving names that the Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms approved of the situation.

He said that there would be no political amnesty for these crimes, and that even if it was late, justice must be sought.

The biggest guarantee that these crimes would not be repeated was real democracy, Borisov said.

Bulgarias communist leader Todor Zhivkovs assimilation campaign against the Turkish minority in the Balkan country resulted in more than 300,000 people migrating to Turkey in late 1980s.

Bulgarian Turks are the descendants of Turks in the Balkan region which was ruled by the Ottoman Empire for nearly five centuries.

The Bulgarian communists assimilation policy has been viewed as an attempt by the partys ailing leadership to use nationalism to create a homogenous country.

It is estimated that Turks constitute about nine percent of Bulgarias more than seven million population.

Bulgaria is a NATO member since 2004 and a European Union member since Jan. 1, 2007.

That fool has nothing better to do, while the country goes under. Not only, because he stopped that pipeline project, taking Serbia under with it. I'll bet he'll give those expelled 300 Subhumans Bulgarian passports.

UN rights chief criticises Bulgaria over treatment of migrants

U.N. human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein accused Bulgaria on Thursday of committing systematic human rights violations by criminalising migrants.

Bulgaria's policy "raises serious concerns about the State's compliance with international law", he said in a statement.

He said it was "particularly disturbing to see important and influential public figures expressing support for illegal armed vigilante groups who have been brazenly hunting down migrants along parts of the border between Bulgaria and Turkey".
