Poland wants to confiscate Russian-owned property


The country’s prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki suggested a law allowing confiscation of real estate and shares

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has proposed the confiscation of Russian-owned properties, as part of broad sanctions in response to Moscow's attack on Ukraine.

“We want to raise the issue of how Poland could freeze and confiscate Russian assets in our country,” Morawiecki told Sunday’s Wprost magazine. “On the one hand, we have constitutional limitations for actions related to property rights. And, on the other hand, more and more Poles don't understand why, if Italians confiscate the yachts of Russian oligarchs, we can't do the same in our country.”

Morawiecki added that “there is some real estate, and financial assets, the shares in companies that we should seize.”

Finance Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, a former bank chairman in the Santander Group, was tapped Thursday to take charge of the Polish government as it gears up for parliamentary elections in 2019, the ruling Law and Justice party announced. He succeeds Beata Maria Szydło, also of the right-wing party, who has served in the post since 2015.

Morawiecki, 49, who was not even a member of Law and Justice two years ago, joined the government as minister for economic development in 2015 before adding the post of finance minister last year.

Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny has been sentenced to nine years in prison in a fraud and contempt of court case. The activist was already serving a two years and eight months term under a separate sentence. The activist has also been sent to a higher security facility, with a more restrictive regime for inmates.

Navalny pleaded not guilty during the trial, in which prosecutors had sought 13 years behind bars. The ruling can be appealed.

On Tuesday, the Lefortovo court in Moscow agreed with the prosecution, which had argued that in some cases, large donations to Navalny’s anti-corruption and political campaigning organizations were used by him and his co-conspirators to cover personal expenses. Navalny was ordered to pay a 1.2 million rubles ($11,500) fine in addition to the time behind bars.

The planes reportedly took off from St. Petersburg and landed at Ben Gurion Airport.

Israel hasn't issued yet sanctions on oligarchs, according to reports.

The attack on the capital city of the breakaway republic left at least 21 civilians killed and scores injured.

Danya has made a difficult decision to leave Russia after the country passed a new law targeting LGBT people

"I'm the only monster drag queen in Russia," Danya proudly tells me as he applies ghostly-white make-up in front of a mirror. We're sitting in his kitchen, a rainbow flag adorning the wall.

Danya's act is horror-themed - think Halloween meets drag. The 22-year-old regularly performed at a queer club night in St Petersburg called Gender Blender. But the project has now cancelled its shows after a new anti-LGBT law was passed by the Russian Parliament in December. Danya's work has all but dried up.

"According to the law, it's forbidden to do what we're doing," Danya says. "We're a lot more anxious now. The risks are much higher."

The new law bans "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations" amongst all age groups. Anyone caught committing this "offence" could be fined up to 400,000 roubles ($5,840; £4,730), with much higher fines for organisations or journalists.

Since the law was passed, Danya has decided to leave Russia and move to France. He says that living in a country where it's illegal to "just be yourself" makes him feel afraid. "My hands are tied. I just don't have a choice anymore. Either I leave the country, or stay here and wait for it to get even worse. What's happening now - it's very frightening."

The worry now amongst the LGBT community is how, when and against whom the law will be applied. Russian legislation is notoriously vague, giving the authorities a blunt instrument that can be applied arbitrarily.

But the fear generated by the legislation is already leading to censorship: online cinemas have deleted LGBT-themed films and TV series and edited out gay scenes. In one episode of the highly-acclaimed HBO series The White Lotus, a Russian streaming service changed the word "gay" to "man", edited in a towel onto one male character's bare backside and deleted a gay sex scene, just days after the law was adopted.

In one St Petersburg bookshop, I find a recently-released title, Shattered - a tale of romance between two men. As the book is wrapped in plastic, I must buy it to look inside. The text has been redacted by the publisher, with whole sections replaced with black lines.

CNN — Russian authorities have detained an American reporter for the Wall Street Journal and accused him of spying, signaling a significant ratcheting of Moscow’s tensions with the United States and its campaign against foreign news media, which has been under intense pressure since President Vladimir Putin launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year.

Russia’s main security service, the FSB, claimed Thursday that Evan Gershkovich, a correspondent based in Moscow, had been trying to obtain state secrets. The Wall Street Journal has categorically rejected those allegations.

The US newspaper “vehemently denies the allegations from the FSB and seeks the immediate release of our trusted and dedicated reporter,” it said in a statement. “We stand in solidarity with Evan and his family.”

A Russian district court in Moscow said Thursday that Gershkovich would be detained until May 29.

National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby declined to weigh in on reports Gershkovich’s detention may be a retaliatory move, telling reporters Thursday that they were still trying to gather information. He also wouldn’t say if he believed Gershkovich was wrongfully detained, deferring to the State Department, which is tasked with officially determining if Americans are detained wrongfully abroad.

But Kirby did acknowledge the challenges facing journalists in Moscow, saying that while the administration respects that reporters in Russia face risks “it doesn’t change our deep concern about Americans being in Russia,” and reiterating a warning to Americans to avoid traveling to the country.

The FSB said Gershkovich was detained in Yekaterinburg, on the eastern side of the Ural Mountains, and claimed he was “trying to obtain secret information” relating to “the activities of one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.”

The FSB said the reporter, who is accredited by Russia’s foreign ministry, was “acting on the instructions of the American side.”

US urges Americans to leave Russia ‘immediately’


The call was prompted by the arrest of a WSJ correspondent in Russia on espionage charges



Washington has called upon Americans who are traveling to or residing in Russia to leave the country “immediately” in the aftermath of the arrest of Wall Street Journal (WSJ) correspondent Evan Gershkovich. While Moscow said he was caught “red-handed” trying to obtain state secrets, the US has condemned the arrest as an assault on “press freedom.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Washington was “deeply concerned” about the development, adding that “in the strongest possible terms, we condemn the Kremlin’s continued attempts to intimidate, repress, and punish journalists and civil society voices.”

“We reiterate our strong warnings about the danger posed to US citizens inside the Russian Federation. US citizens residing or traveling in Russia should depart immediately,” the top diplomat said in a statement.

Russia’s FSB caught Evan Gershkovich “red-handed,” Putin’s spokesman has claimed

Wall Street Journal (WSJ) correspondent Evan Gershkovich was caught “red-handed” trying to obtain Russian state secrets, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has claimed. The Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on Thursday that the reporter had been detained in the city of Ekaterinburg on suspicion of espionage.

Speaking to journalists via conference call, Peskov was asked to comment on the arrest of the American citizen and whether Russia will cooperate with US security services on the issue. The spokesperson stated that he does not know the full details of the case and that the matter remains in the hands of the FSB.

However, Peskov claimed that as far as he was aware, Gershkovich had been caught in the act of trying to collect intelligence about a defense facility, in violation of Russian laws on state secrets. The correspondent, who covers news from Russia, Ukraine, and the former USSR, could face between 10 and 20 years in prison if charged with espionage.

Although Gershkovich had obtained the necessary journalistic credentials from the Foreign Ministry to work in Russia, the FSB alleges that he “acted in the interest of the US government” when he was caught during “an attempt to receive” classified intelligence.

Moscow blasts UN after murder of military blogger Tatarsky


Russia’s envoy slammed the international body’s “lack of reaction” to a war reporter having been killed

The UN and international journalist associations demonstrate a “certain selectiveness” when it comes to the fate of journalists, Russia’s envoy to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, said at a press conference on Monday.

“Yesterday, a Russian blogger and journalist [Vladlen] Tatarsky… was killed. The UN, journalist associations have not reacted in any way to this crime,” Nebenzia said, comparing what he called a lack of reaction in Tatarsky’s case to the response given by the US media and officials to the arrest of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich in Russia.

“We believe we are witnessing a certain selective approach when it comes to what happens to journalists,” the diplomat added.

His words came as the UN Secretary General’s Office expressed its “concern” over Tatarsky’s death. The office will await more information, Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, told a briefing on Monday.

Tatarsky was killed in a bomb blast on Sunday while meeting with followers in a café in St. Petersburg. The Kremlin characterized the incident as a terrorist attack. Russia's Interior Ministry released a video appearing to show the main suspect in the case, a woman identified as Darya Trepova, who admitted to bringing an improvised explosive device to the event.

The call — echoing a tactic used in the 20th-century campaign for the freedom of Soviet Jews — grew louder on Monday as it was shared by prominent personalities from tech journalist Kara Swisher to the former chief rabbi of Moscow to Rabbi Angela Buchdahl of New York City’s Central Synagogue, who said she would be leaving an empty chair at her own seder in honor of Gershkovich, a Moscow correspondent for the Wall Street Journal.

Gershkovich, 31, has been charged with espionage, in a move that human rights organizations are decrying and the Biden administration is fighting. He was arrested Wednesday while he was dining at a restaurant in the city of Yekaterinburg, about 800 miles east of Moscow in the Ural Mountains.
