European Parliament president to Knesset: To be antisemitic is to be anti-European

May 23, 2022

Addressing the Knesset on Monday, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said antisemitism was contrary to European values.

European Union Parliament President Roberta Metsola told Israeli lawmakers on Monday that the EU pledges to fight antisemitism.

"Being antisemitic means being anti-European," Metsola told lawmakers in a special Knesset address. The parliament president also stressed the EU's commitment to strengthen its ties with Israel. "This is my first visit, but it won't be my last," she said.

President Emmanuel Macron says France, Germany, Italy and Romania are in favor

French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that Germany, France, Italy and Romania are all in favor of granting Ukraine immediate EU-candidate status, following a joint meeting between the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and four EU leaders in Kiev on Thursday.

Macron arrived in Ukraine with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

After the talks concluded, the visiting leaders held a press conference at which they announced the results of the talks and expressed support for Ukraine amid the ongoing military conflict with Russia.

Germany proposes major EU reform

Chancellor Scholz called for changes in the decision-making process for accepting new members

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has suggested that a major EU reform is needed to make it easier for new countries to join the bloc. He floated the idea in an interview with the news agency DPA.

During his recent joint-visit to Kiev with the leaders of France and Italy, Scholz made clear that his country “wants a positive decision in favor of Ukraine as a EU candidate country.”

Meanwhile, other EU countries, DPA noted, have set conditions for Ukraine’s status to be approved, with Austria requesting candidate status for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania seeking it for Georgia.

EU plans for life without Russian gas amid inflation spike

By Gabriela Baczynska, Kate Abnett and Ingrid Melander

BRUSSELS, June 24 (Reuters) - EU leaders on Friday warned that "cheap energy is gone" and agreed to boost preparations for further cuts in Russian gas, accusing Moscow of "weaponising" energy via a supply squeeze which Germany warned could partly shut its industry.

A day after celebrations over setting Kyiv on the road to membership of the bloc, Friday's summit in Brussels was a sober reflection on the economic impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with growing worries over soaring prices and warnings of a "tough winter".

"Inflation is a major concern for all of us," European Council chief Charles Michel told a news conference as the two-day summit ended.

"Russia's war of aggression is pushing up the price of food, energy and commodities," he said, adding that leaders had agreed to closely coordinate their economic policy responses.

Of course, it's a lie that Russia is responsible for that, and I think most Westerners will eventually realize it.

EU approves new round of sanctions

The latest package of economic penalties targets Russia’s gold, banks, bikers and actors

The EU’s Committee of Permanent Representatives on Wednesday approved the bloc’s seventh package of economic sanctions on Russia, Lithuanian Ambassador Arnoldas Pranckevicius announced. Meanwhile, the EU relaxed some of its other anti-Russia restrictions to allow food to be traded.

The tranche of fresh economic penalties include an EU-wide ban on gold imports from Russia, a step that the US, UK, Japan and Canada have already taken. With Western markets already closed off to Russian gold as a result of earlier sanctions, the new ban was described as mostly symbolic by industry analysts when it was previewed last week.

Hungary issues Russia sanctions warning to EU

Budapest tells Brussels it won’t even talk about adding more restrictions

Budapest refuses to negotiate any further EU restrictions targeting Russian energy because there is no current alternative to supplies from Moscow, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Saturday.

The EU has slapped several rounds of sanctions on Moscow in response to the conflict in Ukraine, and is pushing for a complete phasing-out of energy supplies from Russia.

“We’re not even willing to negotiate any sanctions on energy, be it oil or gas,” Szijjarto said at an economic forum in Tihany, adding that “the courage of the Hungarian government” has helped Budapest to withstand pressure from Brussels.

EU chief suggests way to avoid future gas troubles

“Unreliable” sources and “friends” will get different treatment in the market, the European Commission president says

The EU plans to come up with new natural gas policies that will differentiate suppliers by their perceived reliability, Ursula von der Leyen has told lawmakers.

“We will develop with the member states a set of measures to take into account the specific nature of our relationship with suppliers, ranging from unreliable suppliers such as Russia to reliable friends,” the European Commission president said in a keynote speech to the European Parliament on Wednesday.

Von der Leyen blasted Russia as a supposedly bad actor and touted as a major achievement of her tenure the reduction of Russian gas in the EU energy mix from 40% last year down to 9% today. She identified nations such as the US, Norway, and Algeria as “friends” that are replacing Russia in the European market.

EU member states approve EUR 5 billion loan for Ukraine

09/20/2022

The member states of the European Union formally approved a loan of five billion euros for Ukraine on Tuesday, the Czech News Agency reports. EU finance ministers agreed on the aid, which will cover Ukraine's expenses for about a month, at an informal meeting in Prague last week.

The approved loan follows from an EU summit at the end of May where leaders gave the green light to a financial support package worth nine billion euros. However, due to disputes over the method of guarantee, only one billion has been released so far.

The European Union has responded Tuesday to the words of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who called for more research on the Holocaust, stating that the statements represent an insult to the memory of the victims.

#eudebates the unique initiative aiming to promote debate, dialogue, knowledge, participation and communication among citizens. #Iran #Raisi #Holocaust #holocaustmemorialday #antisemitism #Jerusalem #Palestinians #Palestine #Israel

«The EU is appalled by these statements by the (Iranian) president, we are committed to combating anti-Semitism and any attempt to deny, justify or trivialize the Holocaust,» EU foreign affairs spokesman Peter Stano stressed at a press conference from Brussels.

In this sense, he stressed that there is «much evidence» of the tragedy of the Holocaust, «what it meant and how it took place», so he considered Raisi’s words an «insult to the memory of the people who died a tragic death in the Holocaust».

The chief spokesman of the European Commission, Eric Mamer, wanted to join the complaint to insist that the persecution of the Jews by Nazi Germany is «a historical fact, documented and proven». «There can be no doubt that these terrible events took place and cast a shadow over Europe and the whole world,» he reflected.

In this way, the EU has replied to the statements of Raisi, who in an interview to the U.S. television network CBS said that «there are some signs that the Holocaust took place», but called for more research by «historians».

These words had the quick response of the Israeli authorities, whose Prime Minister, Yair Lapid, published several photographs of the Holocaust on his account on the social network Twitter along with the text «some signs».

Brussels ‘imposes’ anti-Russia sanctions on EU members – Orban

Europeans have had no say in the application of these sanctions but are paying the price, the Hungarian prime minister has said

The EU has forced anti-Russia sanctions upon the people of the bloc’s member states, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Wednesday, as he announced the launch at home of national consultations on the matter.

Brussels did not ask Europeans about their opinion on the sanctions policy but made them pay the price as restrictions it imposed on Russia backfired, Orban said, in a series of posts on Facebook. The EU sanctions introduced over Russia’s military operation in Ukraine “will cause huge damage to Europe,” he warned, adding that the restrictions had already made “Europeans poorer” because of skyrocketing energy prices.

“It is time to get honest about it with our American friends. Until it is too late,” the prime minister said, pointing to the role the US played in the global sanctions campaign against Russia. The sanctions have failed to end the conflict in Ukraine, Orban argued, adding that they also appear to hurt Europe more than Russia.

This winter will be hard but next one will be even worse – EU

Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson warns of a “difficult” winter amid the energy crisis

EU energy officials are concerned about the effects the ongoing energy crisis in Europe will have on the continent once cold weather sets in, Commissioner Kadri Simson told journalists on Friday.

“Ministers were concerned, as am I, that this will not be an easy winter for us, and the next winter will be even more difficult,” said Simson during a press conference after an extraordinary meeting of EU energy ministers.

The meeting was meant to address the skyrocketing gas prices in Europe and to develop a package of emergency measures aimed at assisting European households and businesses amid the crisis

Following council meeting, EU lauds Israel cooperation amid extensive criticism

3 October 2022

The European Union releases its full, 16 -page statement laying out its position for the EU-Israel Association Council meeting in Brussels.

While lauding cooperation between the EU and Israel on COVID-19, energy, Mediterranean security, cyber, trade and more — much of the document criticizes Israel for its policies toward the Palestinians. Some 21 of the 54 paragraphs deal with the Palestinians, use of force, and the peace process.

The EU expresses concern over journalist Shireen Abu Akleh’s death, the loss of life in the recent round of fighting in August, conditions in Gaza, the religious status quo in Jerusalem and the settlements, among other related issues.

The statement does condemn “indiscriminate launching of rockets by Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and other terrorist groups,” while affirming Israel’s right to self-defense and calling for the release of Israelis held in Gaza.

The EU calls Iran “central to security in the region,” while saying that its support for armed proxies is a significant source of instability. “The restoration and full re-implementation of the JCPOA has the potential to contribute positively to regional prosperity and security,” the documents continues. “It could further encourage a constructive approach in the region as well as offer a platform for further efforts to build and consolidate confidence.”

On Ukraine, the EU “welcomes Israel’s assistance to Ukraine and its citizens, including the supply of defensive military equipment and humanitarian aid.” It also lauds Israel for working to ensure that it can’t be used to circumvent sanctions.

The EU discusses at length its commitment to fighting antisemitism, and the “increasing importance of Holocaust remembrance and civic education in order to counter the development of antisemitic prejudices and stereotypes.”

EU names condition for unblocking Russia’s assets

The bloc’s top official says the money should be kept until Moscow “voluntarily” helps to rebuild Ukraine

The frozen assets of Russia’s Central Bank may be held as “a guarantee” until Moscow agrees to participate in Ukraine’s economic recovery, European Union (EU) Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders said on Saturday.

Western countries seized Russian assets as part of sweeping sanctions that were imposed on Moscow after it launched a military operation in the neighboring state in February.

“From my point of view, it is at least possible to keep these €300 billion ($299 billion) as a guarantee until Russia voluntarily participates in the reconstruction of Ukraine,” Reynders told German media.

Persistent EU rifts seen delaying any approval of gas price cap

By Gabriela Baczynska and John Chalmers

BRUSSELS, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Belgium, Greece, Italy and Poland on Friday threatened to block a new set of European Union steps to alleviate an acute energy crunch because they are angry that a gas price cap is not among detailed proposals, diplomats said.

Persistent disagreements between the 27 EU countries raise the prospect that the bloc's energy ministers will not be able to give a final approval to the cap at a meeting on Nov. 24 as had been expected.

Hungary suspends fuel price cap, blames new EU sanctions for rising fuel costs

The price of gas in Hungary skyrocketed overnight from €1.16 to €1.59 per liter

editor: REMIX NEWS author: MAGYAR NEMZET

The Hungarian government has been forced to suspend its price cap on automotive fuels, the country’s cabinet minister Gergely Gulyás announced at a press conference on Tuesday evening.

The move became a necessity following the introduction of new EU sanctions on Russian oil which came into effect on Monday, with Hungary’s leading energy company, MOL Group, informing the government that it can no longer guarantee a consistent fuel supply without imports, according to the cabinet office spokesperson Zoltan Kovacs.

Hungary introduced the price cap on Nov. 15, 2021, and Gulyás announced it would end at 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday on MOL’s recommendation. The price cap was set to expire at the end of December.

Vice-President of the European Parliament Eva Kaili, who was arrested on Friday on suspicion of having participated in money laundering and corruption involving the state of Qatar, has previously accused the Polish government of an “alarming turn towards authoritarianism” and recently praised Qatar as a leader in promoting labor rights.

In 2016, Kaili criticized the Polish government for the fact it took action against the illegal election of two constitutional court justices ahead of schedule by the previous parliamentary majority in 2015, and for the fact that the ruling party ensured there was pluralism in the media by removing opposition influence over public broadcasters and newspapers. She demanded the use of Article 7 of the Lisbon Treaty against Poland involving sanctions and the suspension of voting rights.

Polish social media users were keen to remind Kaili of her stance on Poland back in 2016.

EU accused of waging ‘food war’

Brussels is trying to change Western “dietary values” by declaring insects fit for human consumption, a Polish official has said

The EU is conducting a “food war” against traditional Western dietary habits, according to Polish Deputy Agriculture Minister Krzysztof Cieciora. The remarks came after a European Commission ruling in January approved the use of house crickets in food.

Appearing on Poland’s Radio Lodz on Friday, Cieciora alleged that EU officials “are trying to change trends,” and argued that their recent decision represented “a battle” and “a food war.”

“Overturning dietary values in the West is becoming a serious element of discussion,” insisted Cieciora, who also predicted an aggressive campaign to promote newly introduced ingredients across the bloc.

According to the minister, Warsaw does not agree “to these alternatives” or to being told by the EU “what and how much we should eat.”

While the Polish government is not planning to ban foodstuffs made from insects, it is determined to “protect traditional food values and the freedom of choice,” Cieciora explained.
