Danish supreme court rules on Iraqi torture victims

The judges overturn a lower court ruling ordering Copenhagen to compensate the civilians

Denmark’s supreme court has overturned a lower court ruling that had ordered the country to compensate 18 civilians tortured during a joint mission by Iraqi and Danish troops during the Iraq war.

Two dozen Iraqi citizens have sued Denmark, claiming they were arrested and faced “torture and inhumane treatment” during operation ‘Green Desert’ near Iraq’s main port city of Basra in 2004.

In 2018, an appeals court ruled that although the Danish troops hadn’t taken part in torture, they were responsible for failing to prevent the abuse perpetrated by their Iraqi counterparts. It ordered the defense ministry to pay compensations of 30,000 danish kroner (roughly $4,600) each to 18 victims.

However, Denmark's supreme court failed to uphold that decision on Tuesday, arguing that the country’s soldiers weren’t responsible for the actions of the Iraqi military.

Denmark accuses Russia of 'unacceptable' incident

The EU country claimed a Russian warship violated its territorial waters

Denmark’s armed forces accused a Russian warship of violating the country’s territorial waters on Friday. With the alleged incursion taking place near a so-called “Democracy Festival,” Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod accused Russia of a “provocation” and summoned Moscow’s ambassador.

The Danish military said the vessel entered its waters without permission shortly after midnight on Friday, and again a few hours later. It left after the Danish Navy made radio contact, Reuters reported.

By Stine Jacobsen and Nikolaj Skydsgaard

COPENHAGEN, July 3 (Reuters) - Three people were killed and several more were woundedin a shooting at a shopping centre in Copenhagen on Sunday, Danish police said, adding they had arrested a 22-year-old Danish man and charged him with manslaughter.

The attack rocked Denmark at the end of an otherwise joyful week, just after it hosted the first three stages of the Tour de France cycle race. The event had sent hundreds of thousands of cheering Danes into the streets across the country.

Details emerge on Copenhagen mass shooter

Hours after a failed call to the mental health services, the suspect gunned down three people, Danish media reports

Before opening fire at a mall in Copenhagen, Denmark on Sunday, the gunman tried to reach the country’s mental health services by phone, Danish media outlet DR reported on Wednesday.

According to the outlet, the suspect, 22, was unable to speak to a counsellor at the Psychiatric Foundation as the service had changed its work hours for the summer. There is no information on why the gunman called the crisis line.

Just hours after trying to call, the gunman killed three people at Field’s shopping mall, including two 17-year-olds and a Russian national, while injuring several others.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for “intense” efforts to fight the disease as cases rise, especially in western Europe.

Bavarian Nordic said deliveries to the undisclosed country would start this year under the contract but the majority of the doses will be delivered during 2023.

Last week, the drugmaker announced it had received an order for an additional 2.5 million doses to the United States.

The vaccine is marketed under the name Jynneos in the United States and Imvanex in Europe.

Denmark becomes first country to pledge ‘loss and damage’ finance

20/09/2022

Rich countries have long resisted giving money specifically for the “loss and damage” that climate change is causing

Denmark has become the first fully-fledged country to pledge funds to developing countries specifically for “tab og skader”, which translates to “loss and damage”.

The Nordic nation committed 100 million DKK ($13m) to build resilience and help climate victims recover during a ministerial meeting on the sideline of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

While the amount pledged is relatively small compared to mitigation and adaptation finance, the move breaks a taboo among rich countries over giving money to address the unavoidable losses and damages already caused by climate change.

Announcing the funds, Denmark’s development minister Flemming Møller Mortensen said: “I saw for myself in Bangladesh this spring that the consequences of climate change need increased focus.”

“It is grossly unfair that the world’s poorest should suffer the most from the consequences of climate change, to which they have contributed the least. With this new agreement, we are putting action behind words,” he continued.

Olympic Committees From Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland have released a joint statement demanding that Russia is further frozen out of the international sporting fold.

Swedish institute says underwater ‘blasts’ recorded prior to Nord Stream leaks

Two underwater blasts were recorded prior to the discovery of three leaks on the Nord Stream pipelines linking Russia and Europe, a Swedish seismological institute said Tuesday as the unexplained leaks raised suspicions of sabotage.

(...) “The first happened at 2:03am just southeast of Bornholm with a magnitude of 1.9. Then we also saw one at 7:04pm on Monday night, another event a little further north and that seems to have been a bit bigger. Our calculations show a magnitude of 2.3,” Schmidt said.
(...)
“With energy releases this big there isn’t much else than a blast that could cause it,” he added.

Schmidt explained that since the releases were “very sudden” and not a “slow collapse”, the events were “in all likelihood some type of blasts.”
(...)
Photos taken by the Danish military on Tuesday showed large masses of bubbles on the surface of the water emanating from the three leaks located in Sweden’s and Denmark’s economic zones, spreading from 200 to 1,000 metres in diameter.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Copenhagen was not ruling out sabotage of the gas pipelines between Russia and Europe.

Germany, Denmark and Norway to give Ukraine howitzers

Germany, Denmark and Norway will supply Ukraine with 16 armoured howitzer artillery systems from next year, Berlin said Sunday, as Kyiv seeks heavier weapons to boost its fightback against Russia.

Published: 2 October 2022 17:56 CEST

The announcement came after German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht visited Ukraine this weekend for the first time since Moscow’s invasion in February.

Germany, Denmark and Norway had agreed to jointly finance the procurement of the Slovakian Zuzana-2 guns at a cost of 92 million euros ($90.2 million), said the defence ministry in Berlin.

Danish rights group urges FIFA to tackle ‘Denmark’s racism’ at World Cup

October 2, 2022

Denmark is the first nation in Europe to order a large number of Syrian refugees to return home.

FIFA has been urged by a Danish human rights organisation to permit referees to raise awareness on Denmark’s racism against vulnerable communities by donning armbands at the 2022 World Cup games in Qatar.

The organisation, DENMARK UNCENSORED, urged FIFA President Gianni Infantino in an open letter to “support marginalised and vulnerable people affected by the racist laws of the Danish government.”

A group of Danish human rights advocates and expatriates who were frustrated by the racist policies of the Danish government that target minorities and people of colour founded the organisation in 2020.

Government with Social Democrats is favoured choice of rival ex-PM Rasmussen

The governing Social Democrats should form a coalition across the centre according to former Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, an erstwhile rival.

Government with Social Democrats is favoured choice of rival ex-PM Rasmussen

Rasmussen, leader of the Moderate party, told media Zetland that the Social Democrats should be part of a new government after the November 1st election in an interview with media Zetland.

The ex-PM’s comments are important because they appear to increase the possibility of such a coalition becoming reality, an otherwise unlikely eventuality under Denmark’s established ‘bloc politics’ system.

2022 DANISH ELECTION

Three candidates for PM in Denmark, and one wild card

Facing off with incumbent Social Democratic Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, the right and far-right opposition are mainly lining up behind two candidates to form the next government after the November 1 election.

Published: 30 October 2022 10:24 CET

The liberal Jakob Ellemann-Jensen and the conservative Soren Pape Poulsen are in the running to take her place, but a third man could also end up being a key player: the centrist and former Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen.

Let’s take a closer look at the candidates:

Mette Frederiksen: the new anti-immigration left

At 44, the current head of government has embodied the new face of the centre-left Social Democrat, which has embraced ever stricter migration policies in the name of defending the welfare state.

Danes hand Social Democrats mandate to form government

Reuters

COPENHAGEN, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Danes on Tuesday handed the Social Democratic Party a mandate to form a new government in a general election seen as a vote of confidence in Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's handling of the pandemic and her leadership to overcome yet another crisis.

The Social Democrats secured their strongest backing in more than two decades, despite criticism of Frederiksen's tenure for having centralised power around her office and her controversial decision to cull all mink during the pandemic.

Danish Conservative leader under pressure following poor election result

A number of voices within Denmark’s Conservative party have question whether leader Søren Pape Poulsen should continue following a poor performance in last week’s election.

Published: 9 November 2022 13:55 CET

After declaring himself a candidate for Prime Minister earlier this year and seeing polling exceed 15 points in the summer, Poulsen led the Conservatives to a disappointing 5.5 percent vote share and 10 seats at the November 1st vote, a worse performance than in the 2019 election.

“If the party is to be resurrected, I find it very difficult to see Pape as the right leader. A replacement must be found in good time before the next election,” Mogens Lønborg, the former mayor of Copenhagen, told newspaper Berlingske.

“When you have lost two thirds of voters in record time through a catastrophic election campaign with scores of mistakes, you must also think about whether we have the right leader,” he said.

Denmark to send artillery to Ukraine, delaying own build-up

Reuters

COPENHAGEN, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Denmark said on Thursday it will donate 19 French-made Caesar howitzer artillery systems to Ukraine, fulfilling the wish of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy but stunting the Nordic country's own military build-up.

Kyiv last month asked Copenhagen to supply the weapons systems, sparking a debate in Denmark over whether the country could afford to donate much-needed artillery at the expense of its own armament as it seeks to build up depleted stock.

"We have been in continuous contact with the Ukrainians about the Caesar artillery in particular and I am happy that we have now received broad support from the Danish parliament to donate it to Ukraine's freedom struggle," Defence Minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen said in a statement.

10 ways Denmark’s left-wing government reduced asylum applications by 82% and dramatically cut immigration

10 strategies Denmark has used to radically reduce immigration and maintain their nearly homogenous European population

February 01, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: JOHN CODY

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, a Social Democrat, has championed strict immigration policies that can be emulated in other European nations.

The Danish left-wing government’s continued push against mass immigration is producing tangible results, including a dramatic reduction in asylum applications as well as a sharp reduction in overall immigration. The government continues to be unique in all of Europe, featuring the only ruling left-wing bloc seriously opposed to mass immigration.

The numbers speak for themselves, with an 82 percent drop in asylum applications recorded and overall immigration falling 28 percent, according to a new in-depth report from the Foundation for Political Innovation (Fondapol).

The various hurdles and restrictions enacted by the government have made Denmark far less attractive for immigrants, and have kept the country nearly entirely ethnic European, with the vast majority of the population of Danish descent.

Despite the lack of diversity in Denmark, the country is routinely ranked one of the happiest on Earth, and it excels in terms of per capita wages, quality of life, inequality measurements, corruption, crime rates, and a range of other important metrics.

Many of the European countries run by the left-liberal establishment, which champions diversity as an intrinsic good, may want to examine the case of Denmark. Here are 10 ways the country has put a lid on immigration and satisfied the demands of a population opposed to more arrivals.

BERLIN, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands will pool funds to restore at least 100 old Leopard 1 tanks from industry stocks and supply them to Ukraine, according to a joint statement published on Tuesday.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, on a surprise visit to Kyiv, said between 20 and 25 of the tanks would arrive by summer, about 80 by the end of the year and another 100 in 2024, according to a statement by Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov's office after the counterparts met.

Denmark 'open' to delivering F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine - minister

Reuters

COPENHAGEN, Feb 24 (Reuters) - Denmark is "open" to the idea of sending fighter jets to Ukraine to help its war effort against the Russian invasion, the Danish defence minister said on Friday, according to state broadcaster DR.

"I won't rule out that at some point it may be necessary to look at the contribution of fighter jets," acting Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said.

The Danish air force has purchased 77 F-16 jets since the 1970s, according to the armed forces. Around 30 of them are currently in operation, according to local media reports.

Denmark scraps public holiday to finance higher defence spending

Reuters

COPENHAGEN, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Denmark's parliament on Tuesday passed a much-debated bill put forward by the new government to scrap a public holiday to help finance increased defence spending.

The newly formed government, which has proposed sweeping reforms aimed at overcoming challenges to the country's welfare model, says the move will help raise tax revenues for higher defence spending in the wake of the Ukraine war.

Labour unions have protested a plan to abolish the Great Prayer Day, a Christian holiday that falls on the fourth Friday after Easter and dates back to 1686, since it was put forward in December.

Russia slams Denmark over Nord Stream ‘fraud’

Copenhagen has refused to allow Moscow’s participation in pipeline bombing probe

Denying Russia access to the investigation of sabotage on the Nord Stream gas pipelines makes a mockery of those probes, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claimed on Thursday.

“This is such a fraud, a total scam, not even a con but a threepenny game, which in my opinion no one has been buying for a very long time,” Zakharova said in an interview with Rossiya-1.

“They are playing this for themselves, but the story with Nord Stream will not end the same way as many other stories they have buried or covered up, I think, for the simple reason that there’s a lot of money at stake,” Zakharova added.

Earlier in the day, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen said that Moscow won’t be permitted to participate, telling reporters that “Denmark, Sweden and Germany all have rule of law and one can have confidence in our investigations.”
