Default Elon Musk's Space Car

Is the Tesla Roadster Flying on the Falcon Heavy's Maiden Flight Just Space Junk?

Wow, someone's got too much money. You have to love these hippiecrites, they all talk about how the 1% should cough up the billions of dollars for free healthcare, free school, etc, but then waste their money on nonsense like this.

It may have been cheaper to launch a Prius than a Tesla Roadster.

Default Starman and the Roadster are on the way to Mars

Out to Mars orbit distance, about 145 million miles from the Sun. It's actually not going anywhere near Mars itself.

The Tesla Roadster is actually the fourth electric car launched into space if you count the Lunar Roving Vehicles from Apollo 15, 16 and 17.

Maybe Elon is hoping to someday recover his Roadster after he gets his Mars colony up and running? Whoever does find it out there will see that the car will be in bad shape. The mostly aluminum Falcon rocket stage the Roadster is attached to will probably be fine. In the vacuum of space, all metal parts such as the car's body will not corrode, but other components like plastic, vinyl, nylon and foam rubber seats, interior fixtures and rubber tires will degrade and disintegrate from solar ultraviolet radiation and extreme temperature variations in space, 250 degrees F in sunlight to -250 in shadow. The cherry-red paint job will darken to a blackish-brown color and over time the car will be pitted with small micrometeoroid impacts. Doubtful it will collide with an asteroid or larger object for thousands or perhaps millions of years--space is really big, even in our own solar system. The Starman mannequin dressed in a space suit won't be too bad, neither will the copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy inside the glove box, just depends how long it's out there. Actually, there is an entire museum of manmade objects in orbit around the Sun after 60 years of spaceflight--dead and still-functioning space probes, rocket boosters and other debris, same as in Earth orbit, to which the Tesla Roadster is now part of.

Default This might be the reaction in the future

From Star Trek: Voyager--'The 37s.' Musk had to have gotten the idea from this.

Looks like a ego trip combined with an incredible waste of money.

It's easy to waste money on crap when someone else is picking up the bill.

Can we wean Elon Musk off government support already?

Tesla’s new Model 3 has finally arrived, and not a moment too soon. The critics seem to love it, and Tesla management says it’s already received deposits for 500,000 of the vehicles. Perhaps now Elon Musk can finally get his hand out of U.S. taxpayers’ wallets?

Musk is, to be sure, an ideas man. Private, commercial space travel? Check. Washington to New York in less than half an hour in what he calls a “hyperloop” train that will travel at 800 miles per hour? Check. A new kind of tunneling engineering? Check. Solar energy? Check. Electric cars? Check, check.

As wide-ranging as these various entrepreneurial ventures may be, they all have one thing in common – not a single one of them would get funding in a competitive private capital market if it weren’t for massive (and I do mean massive) taxpayer-funded government subsidies.

A study published two years ago by The Los Angeles Times revealed

that just three of Musk’s ventures – SolarCity Corp. (which manufactured and installed solar energy systems before its 2016 merger with Tesla Motors Inc.), Tesla Motors Inc. (which manufactures electric vehicles), and Space Exploration Technologies Corp., known as SpaceX (which builds rocket ships) – had received $4.9 billion in government subsidies to that point in time. By now, Musk’s various ventures have sucked well over $5 billion from government coffers.

But granting literally billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies to Musk’s firms isn’t the worst of it. No, that honorific is reserved for this little gem: In order to induce car buyers to spend their money on electric vehicles, the federal government offers a $7,500 rebate on the purchase price.

Some states enhance that rebate with rebates of their own. In California, for instance, purchasers of electric vehicles get a state-funded rebate of $2,500 more.

SpaceX offered to launch a free payload for NASA and the Air Farce on Falcon Heavy, but both declined. The car was really a second payload choice. Being the purpose of the flight was to test the rocket itself successfully on its first launch, all mission objectives were met, except for loss of the Falcon core stage.

Default In the year 2273...

Wouldn't that be "T'sla", not "V'ger?" And T'sla was coming to Earth to seek the Creator Musk?
