In several Danish neighbourhoods, ethnic Danes are the minority.

A study carried out by the online newsletter Ugebrevet A4 shows that more people with an immigrant background than ethnic Danes live in the districts of Odense NØ (postcode 5240), Brøndby Strand (2660) and Brabrand (8220).

Mostly in big cities
The study was based on figures from Statistics Denmark regarding the number of immigrants, refugees and their children.

The report points out that most immigrants live close to big cities such as Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense and Aalborg.

Ethnic Danes dominate rural areas

On the contrary, almost 100 percent of the citizens living in Anholt and Bagenkop on Langeland are ethnic Danes.

In general, rural areas are scarcely inhabited by residents with immigrant backgrounds, while in the cities, the composition of residents can strikingly vary from neighbourhood to neighbourhood.

jewsign Fearing Copycat Attacks, Danish Jews Demand Police Protection

Denmark's main Jewish group on Tuesday called for police protection for its school and synagogue in Copenhagen, after four Jews were murdered last week in a hostage crisis at a kosher supermarket in Paris committed by an Islamist terrorist.

"With the situation being like it is, we believe it's very clear that Jewish targets are a high priority for the terrorists," the deputy chairman of the Jewish Community of Denmark, Jonathan Fischer, told AFP.

Default Danes talk tough on immigration pre-election

http://www.thelocal.dk/20150529/dane...ad-of-election Danes talk tough on immigration pre-election

In a county where non-Western immigration has been a dominant theme for more than a decade, many foreigners find the tone of the debate unbearable.

Polls point to tight race in Danish election (28 May 15)
What you need to know about Denmark's election (27 May 15)
PM's party touts hardline immigration policies (23 Mar 15)
Denmark to immigrants: 'You must contribute' (18 Mar 15)

"Unwanted" and "uncivilised" -- foreigners are sometimes shocked by the blunt tone of Denmark's debate on Muslim immigration, and with a general election around the corner politicians show no sign of toning it down.

"There's no way you can integrate with all this rhetoric because people think you're a criminal or a freeloader," said Kelly Draper, a British-born teacher who came to the Scandinavian country seven years ago.

"The last time I watched the Danish news... they had four main stories and three of them were about how immigrants were ruining everything," she added.

Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt on Wednesday called an election for June 18, and 10 years after daily Jyllands-Posten published the Mohammed cartoons that sparked lethal protests in some Muslim countries, immigration and Islam remain at the top of the agenda.

The opposition right-wing bloc is currently leading the polls, but even if it does well in the election it would need the support of the anti-immigration Danish People's Party (DF) to pass legislation in parliament.

Like its peers in other European countries, the party regularly makes comments that some find offensive and even racist, but the level of hyperbole and vitriol is what takes foreigners by surprise.

"I'm Jewish so I always tell [Danes], you just take the word Muslim, switch it out with Jewish and you've got Germany of the 1930s," said David Miller, an American expatriate living in Copenhagen.

DF lawmakers have likened the Muslim veil to the swastika, the Koran to Mein Kampf and argued that Islam is "the greatest threat to our civilisation".

Former party leader Pia Kjærsgaard claimed immigrant-heavy parts of Danish cities were "populated by people from a lower level of civilisation."

Echoing that sentiment, Anders Vistisen, a Danish member of the European Parliament, last year described population growth in Muslim countries as "humanity's greatest challenge."

"About the Jews' situation in Europe: The Muslims continue where Hitler left off. Only the treatment Hitler got will change the situation," former parliamentarian Mogens Camre, who now serves as a councillor in a Copenhagen suburb, wrote on Twitter last year.

'Unwanted guests'
DF's role in Danish politics has arguably made it the most influential party of its kind in Europe, and with some polls giving it one in five votes amid rising numbers of refugees from Syria, its power shows no sign of waning.

The party was allowed to shape Danish migration policies into some of Europe's toughest in exchange for supporting in parliament Danish governments between 2001 and 2011.

It is unclear if it will seek to join a future right-wing government, which observers say would limit its ability to U-turn on controversial issues when public opinion changes.

Over time, voters have found it harder to distinguish between DF's views and those of the main right-wing party, Venstre.

In an op-ed titled "Happy Eid to all Muslims!", a leading Venstre MP last year suggested selecting immigrants based on their religion.

"There are big differences in the ability and willingness for integration depending on whether it is a Christian American or a Swede or a Muslim Somali or Pakistani who comes here," Inger Støjberg wrote in Berlingske.

In the 2011 election, the ruling Social Democrats campaigned on rolling back some of the immigration policies introduced by the previous government, but after losing voters to DF it too has changed its message.

In October, its spokeswoman on immigration came under fire for describing refugees as "unwanted guests, no matter how you look at it."

In March, a new campaign poster showed the Social Democratic prime minister next to the slogan: "If you come to Denmark you should work", referring to the relatively high unemployment rate among immigrants.

Soul searching
In the wake of February's twin attacks in Copenhagen by gunman Omar El-Hussein, many Danes asked themselves how a young man born and bred in their country could have felt so alienated from the society in which he lived.

See also: Copenhagen shooting: From petty criminal to cold-blooded killer

Some people, mostly on the left, argued that the national conversation on Islam had made it harder for Muslims to integrate.

Even before the attacks a December poll found that 44 percent of Danes were "sometimes ashamed of the Danish immigration debate", while one in three Danish Turks said they had considered leaving the country because of it.

It's unlikely to convince DF's spokesman on immigration issues, Martin Henriksen, who once described Islam as "a terrorist movement" but who now prefers the term "an ideology of conquest".

"There are some people who think it's offensive if you say that 20 percent of those in Danish prisons come from a Muslim background," the lawmaker, who represents a working class constituency outside Copenhagen, told AFP in his office in the Danish parliament.

"But it's just a fact, it's reality, and then I think you should just say it and have a debate based on that," he added.

Angry Grave of Hans Christian Andersen vandalized

The tombstone of world-renowned Danish author Hans Christian Andersen was defaced in Assistens Cemetery in Nørrebro but police said it was not connected to the desecration of a Muslim cemetery outside of Copenhagen.

Copenhagen area Muslim cemetery desecrated (07 Jun 15)

The grave of Hans Christian Andersen, who is almost universally regarded as the most famous Dane ever, was vandalized with a vulgarity over the weekend, Copenhagen Police confirmed early on Sunday.

“We received a report at 8.40pm that graffiti had been noticed on the tombstone. A patrol confirmed that ‘Fuck Denmark’ had been written with a silver-coloured marker. Further down on the stone, it says ’69!’,” police spokesman Henrik Brix told Ritzau.

Although the incident came to light less than 24 hours after a Muslim cemetery in Brøndby was vandalized, police said that they could not draw a direct line between the two acts.

“We don’t know if this is an act of revenge. It is curious that these two things happen so close to each other but we cannot draw any other conclusions than that there have been two desecrated burial sites,” Brix told Ritzau.

On Sunday morning, police wrote on Twitter that they believe the graffiti was written on Andersen's grave before the Saturday incident at the Muslim cemetery.

Vi takker for de mange henvendelser ang. hærværk på H.C. Andersens grav. Vi er nu bekendt med at hærværket er sket før lørdag. #politidk
— Københavns Politi (@KobenhavnPoliti) June 7, 2015

Brix said that the police have arranged for the Andersen graffiti to be removed and are taking the action seriously.

“Right now we have few clues. We have a sole imprint but this is a very well-visited area, so it can be difficult. We hope to find the marker and have looked for it in the rubbish bins,” Brix said.

Andersen's grave was the only one to have been defaced in Assistens Cemetery. The cemetery is also the final resting place of philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, Nobel Prize recipient Niels Bohr and singer Natasja Saad, among others.

Default Denmark's asylum seeker numbers up again

http://www.thelocal.dk/20150624/denm...e-record-month Denmark's asylum seeker numbers up again

Published: 24 Jun 2015 17:32 GMT+02:00

A new report from the Danish Immigration Service showed on Wednesday that 2015 is on pace to be another record year for the number of migrants who came to Denmark seeking asylum.

Four of ten refugees fail Danish language test (15 Jun 15)
Syrian refugees resort to hunger strikes (11 Jun 15)
Denmark grants asylum to nine of ten refugees (08 Jun 15)
Denmark to fly refugee surveillance missions (18 May 15)
Denmark's 'sad' position in EU asylum plan (15 May 15)

New numbers released by the Danish Immigration Service (Udlændingestyrelsen – DIS) on Wednesday revealed that May was another record month for the number of asylum seekers in Denmark.

Some 879 asylum seekers came to the country in May, which is the highest monthly figure in years. In comparison, there were 556 asylum seekers in April, and 723 in May last year.

The rising numbers indicate that 2015 may become another record year. According to DIS, 2,853 asylum seekers came to Denmark between January 1st and May 31st, 2014, whereas 2,995 have done so in the same period this year.

The number of asylum seekers in Denmark nearly doubled in 2014, with 14,815 people arriving in the course of the year compared to 7,557 asylum seekers in 2013.

Part of the explanation stems from the fact that an increasing number of Eritrean citizens are being granted asylum following the uproar surrounding a DIS report that claimed that it was safe to send refugees back to Eritrea. That report was disavowed by its one and only named source and heavily criticized by those with knowledge of Eritrea. The government eventually admitted it had 'doubts' about the report and ultimately decided to grant refugee status to nearly all Eritreans seeking asylum in Denmark.

In March, Denmark welcomed only 21 Eritrean refugees, while the number increased to 76 in April and 214 in May.

The rising number of asylum seekers are unlikely to be a welcome development for Venstre leader Lars Løkke Rasmussen and his allies in the blue bloc.

Immigration and asylum were major themes throughout the recent election, with Rasmussen’s blue bloc campaigning on implementing tighter restrictions.

Rasmussen argued during the election that it would be too late to take action after the summer.

“We cannot wait till October because we know that it is in the summer months that the pressure is greatest. That’s why we have to take action now,” he said at a press conference the week before the election.

Default 2 incredibly rich, "activist" Danes selfishly bring rapeugees across the Oresund Bridge

A court in southern Denmark has fined an outspoken children's rights activist and her partner for driving six Syrian migrants from a Danish ferry terminal to a bridge to Sweden, where they are believed to have sought asylum.

The city court in Nykoebing ruled Friday Lisbeth Zornig Andersen and Mikael Rauno Lindholm were guilty of violating Danish immigration laws forbidding assisting foreigners to cross Denmark illegally.

They were each fined 22,500 kroner ($3,330) for driving four adults and two children to the Oresund bridge in early September.

In the fall of 2013 was one of the think tank projects launched in the form of democracy campaign "Voices on the edge" that aspired to socially disadvantaged to vote in municipal elections and thus achieve greater political focus and priorities. The campaign helped to raise the turnout among disadvantaged and the project was subsequently turned into an association.

Four acquitted of smuggling refugees to Sweden

Last week, the Copenhagen City Court acquitted four people of helping 17 refugees travel from Denmark to Sweden by boat. The events that led the four to court took place a year ago.

“We saw a man who looked like he could be a refugee and showed him a sign that said ‘Welcome, would you like to go to Sweden?’,” University of Copenhagen student Annika Holm Nielsen told DR at the time.

Nazi hunter hopes to revive Danish war crimes case

The US-based Simon Wiesenthal Centre filed a complaint on Monday over Danish prosecutors’ decision to not press charges against two men accused of being volunteer SS guards at a Belarus concentration camp.

The centre’s top Nazi hunter, Efraim Zuroff, said he had appealed to the Danish Director of Public Prosecutions to reopen the case.

"We do not agree with the decision to close the case and will supply the explanations for our complaint, after the Director of Public Prosecutions has an opportunity to review our submission and make his ruling,” Zuroff said.

'Good time to take in your share of refugees': UN to Denmark

Low numbers of refugee arrivals mean that Denmark should be able to accept its quota of transferable refugees, says the UN.

The UN’s high commissioner has called for Denmark to resume accepting its quota of relocated refugees, with asylum applications in the Scandinavian country at a record low.

But the country’s two biggest political parties, the Venstre (Liberal) Party, which is the senior partner in the coalition government, and the opposition Social Democrats say that it is too early for Denmark to accept refugees relocated to it by the UN, writes Politiken.

Denmark’s minister for Immigration and Integration Inger Støjberg was hastily evacuated from the Sjælsmark deportation centre for rejected asylum seekers after tensions escalated during a tense visit to the facility.

Støjberg was escorted from the centre by security guards after an incident while she was visiting the centre, reports broadcaster DR.

Foreigners should not be allowed to run in Danish local elections: DF

Denmark’s nationalist Danish People’s Party (Dansk Folkeparti, DF) wants to change rules to prevent foreign citizens from running in municipal and regional elections.

Parliament will on Thursday open discussion of a proposal by the party to introduce rules requiring non-Danish citizens to pass an extended Danish language test before being approved to run in the elections, TV2 reported on Wednesday.

Opposition MPs and an international candidate in the 2017 regional elections have voiced their opposition to DF's stance.

Martin Henriksen, immigration spokesperson with DF, told TV2 that his party would prefer Danish citizens only to run in the elections.

Denmark may have to accept return of Isis militants: report

Danish citizens captured in Syria after fighting for the Islamic State (Isis) terror group may be sent back to Denmark, according to a report.

Statements made by Defence Minister Claus Hjort Frederiksen suggest that Denmark may be required to accept the return of citizens who have fought for the group, reports broadcaster DR.

Several hundred Isis fighters are currently imprisoned in Syria, where the movement has gradually been subdued in recent years. A number of the captured individuals are Danes.

Danish politician compares Trump to Hitler … and Hitler wins

Niels Aalbæk Jensen, a member of the city council of the Sorø municipality for the left wing Alternativ party, compared US President Donald Trump and the Republican Party to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis in a tweet, and Hitler came off being the better guy.

“Hitler did not constitute a threat to humanity,” tweeted Jensen. “Donald Trump and the Republican Party do. They deny the threat of climate change and sabotage all actions to safeguard our survival. The Republican Party is the most dangerous organisation in human history.”

Rainbow family numbers in Denmark in huge increase

In 2013, 84 families in Denmark had same-sex parents. By 2018, that number had increased to 659.

As this week sees Copenhagen Pride celebrate diversity and equality for LGBT+ people, the number of rainbow families – families with same-sex or LGBT+ parents – is reported to have increased by a factor of just under eight within the last five years, broadcaster DR reports.

The largest increase, in the Capital City (Hovedstaden) administrative region, saw such families increase from 42 in 2013 to 293 on January 1st this year, according to the report
