Argentina mourns 21-year-old son of Buenos Aires rabbi who died in Meron disaster

(JTA) — A 21-year-old yeshiva student from Argentina was among the 45 people to die in the Lag b’Omer disaster in Israel last week.

Abraham Daniel Embon attended Yeshiva Heichal Yitzchak in Jerusalem. His father, Daniel, is a rabbi at Sucath David Community Center, an Orthodox institution in Buenos Aires.

Many of Argentina’s leading Jewish organizations — including the political umbrella DAIA, the Buenos Aires JCC AMIA and the Argentine Zionist Organization OSA — offered condolences. Along with its condolences, the country’s Foreign Ministry offered its support for Israel.

Jaime Lerner, renowned Brazilian-Jewish urban planner and politician, dies at 84

RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA) — Jaime Lerner, one of the world’s most influential architects and urban planners who was involved in his local Brazilian Jewish community, died Thursday at 84.

Lerner also had a long political career, serving three terms as the mayor of his native city Curitiba and two terms as governor of the Parana region.

He died from complications of chronic kidney disease.

“Our Jewish community loses a great Jew and Brazil loses a great man,” said Isac Baril, president of the Parana Jewish federation. “He would always serve as a board member of some of our Jewish institutions. Jaime Lerner was a Yiddish ‘voiler,’ a good Jew,”

He was the first Latin American to preside over the International Union of Architects, a Paris-based organization representing 1.5 million professionals in 98 countries.

A haredi Orthodox ‘City of Torah’ is planned in Mexico, first in Latin America

(JTA) — The foundation stone has been laid for a “City of Torah” in Mexico, the first village in Latin America to be comprised almost exclusively of haredi Orthodox Jews.

The village, under construction near Ixtapan de la Sal, a small town about 75 miles southwest of Mexico City, will begin with 40 houses and hopes to attract 120 families by 2024, its developers said at a ceremony last week marking the project launch.

It will span about a square mile at first and feature a yeshiva; synagogues and schools for both its Ashkenazi and Sephardic populations; a kosher supermarket; and a gym complex with a pool, spa and sport venue. The funding is primarily from a businessman, Abraham Mizrahi, who is not haredi Orthodox. Mexican Rabbi Yosef Tawil was appointed chief of the town’s rabbinical council.

Anita Novinsky, leading scholar on Jews of Brazil, dies at 98

RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA) — Anita Novinsky, a leading Brazilian scholar on the Portuguese Inquisition and the history of Jewish presence in Brazil, passed away in Sao Paulo on Tuesday. She was 98.

The author of several books founded and served as chairperson of the Museum of Tolerance at the University of Sao Paulo, where she received a PhD. in social history.

“Professor Novinsky shed light on a dormant knowledge and rescued significant roots within the history of Brazil, unveiling the Jewish contribution since the arrival of the Portuguese caravels,” or 15th-century ships, said Claudio Lottenberg, president of the Brazilian Israelite Confederation, Brazil’s umbrella Jewish organization. “Were it not for her, much of this universe would still be asleep. Not only did she research, but also has guided seminal works that make Brazilian Jewish history shine bright.”

Born in Poland, Anita Waingort Novinsky immigrated to Brazil with her family when she was 1 year old and later became a Brazilian citizen. She specialized in study of New Christians, also known as conversos or marranos — Portuguese and Spanish Jews who converted or were forced to convert to Christianity during the Middle Ages, yet continued to practice Judaism in secrecy and pretended to be fervently Catholic while out in public. Their descendants are also known as bnei anusim.

Popular Argentine TV show uses Anne Frank image to illustrate song about ‘women who don’t leave the house’

(JTA) — In a recent episode of “Showmatch,” one of Argentina’s most popular talent contest shows, a contestant sang about “women who don’t leave the house” — in front of a background image of Anne Frank.

The song, titled “I’m Not That Woman” and written by Spanish singer Paulina Rubio, refers to empowered women who do not follow traditional societal norms. The image of Anne Frank appeared on a giant monitor right as singer Sofia Jimenez sang the lyrics “I’m not the type of woman who doesn’t leave the house” on an episode that aired last Friday. The screen showed other prominent female figures throughout the song, including Oprah Winfrey and Mother Teresa.

Argentine Jewish institutions condemned the incident, and some of the show’s producers, as well as its host, visited the Anne Frank House in Buenos Aires, a museum that recreates the famed Jewish diarist’s attic hideout.

(JTA) — The law school of the University of Buenos Aires has launched a watchdog institute to monitor antisemitism.

The Observatory on the Fight Against Antisemitism will advise local and international institutions, educate legal professionals and provide legal tools to combat antisemitism. It aims to find and analyze antisemitism in the press, social media, public speeches by officials and in educational institutions. A law professor, Juan Antonio Travieso, will head the institute.

Honduras’ new vice president has history of antisemitic remarks

(JTA) — Honduras’ newly sworn-in vice president and his wife have a history of making antisemitic remarks, but Jewish leaders in the region have not sounded an alarm.

Salvador Nasralla, who is of Palestinian descent and was sworn in on Jan. 27, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, said in a 2019 debate that Jews oversee the global money supply and previously accused the conservative outgoing president Juan Orlando Hernandez of being controlled by Israel.

Nasralla’s wife Iroshka Elvir, who was named Miss Honduras in 2015, had to apologize to the Latin American Jewish Congress for saying “Hitler was a great leader” during an interview with the El Heraldo newspaper in 2017.

Honduras has in recent years been “one of Israel’s staunchest allies in the region, in part due to Evangelical support,” said Dina Siegel Vann, director of The Arthur and Rochelle Belfer Institute for Latino and Latin American Affairs at the American Jewish Committee (AJC). Hernandez moved his country’s embassy to Jerusalem last year, becoming one a few world leaders to take the step after former President Trump.

While few Jewish organizations have made statements regarding the change in leadership, Siegel Vann told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that Nasralla’s “anti-Israel stances and comments have so far not impacted the current state of excellent bilateral ties.”

“In addition, US support is a critical piece for President Xiomara Castro’s government program to succeed, so she will bend backwards to avoid a confrontation including on the issue of Israel,” Siegel Vann added in an email.

PUNTA DEL ESTE, Uruguay (JTA) — The upscale Uruguayan coastal resort city of Punta del Este checks a lot of boxes for 18-year-old Argentine Sofia Grosz: gorgeous beaches, vibrant nightlife, a hub for many of her Jewish school friends from Buenos Aires.

“Coming here, it’s almost a tradition in our family,” said Grosz, who belongs to the famed Hacoaj Jewish sport and community center back home and graduated from a Jewish high school last year.

She’s not alone — Punta del Este has long been a haven for tens of thousands of Jews, many of them Argentines, each summer (which ended recently in the southern hemisphere).

In addition to the ritzy beach attractions — people like Mark Zuckerberg, Ralph Lauren and Shakira have vacationed here — the city’s laidback mood, natural beauty and low crime rate has been a selling point to Latin American Jews for decades. Jewish developers, whose presence can be traced back to Argentine businessman Mauricio Litman, who founded the Cantegrill Country Club in 1950, were also heavily involved in the city’s physical growth.
