US responds to trucker blockade of border with Canada

The White House argues ongoing US-Canada border blockade amid trucker protests “not related” to vaccine mandate

As the Ambassador Bridge between Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan remained closed for trucks as of Tuesday evening, White House press secretary Jen Psaki referred to the issue causing the closure as “sporadic congestion” and insisted it was not related to Covid-19 vaccine mandates.

“The protests going on across Canada, which have spread to a bridge, are leading to sporadic congestion and blockages,” Psaki told reporters at the briefing on Tuesday afternoon.

While “some” of the congestion is due to protests, “it is clear that these disruptions have broadened in scope beyond the vaccine requirement implementation,” she added.

"I know there’s been some suggestion – not by reporters, necessarily, at all – that this congestion is related to the vaccine requirements. It’s not."

U.S., Canada warn of economic hit from trucker protests

By Carlos Osorio, Blair Gable and Jarrett Renshaw
February 10, 2022

WINDSOR/OTTAWA/WASHINGTON, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Truckers opposed to coronavirus mandates risk hurting the auto sector and agriculture as they block U.S-Canada border crossings, the White House said on Wednesday as Ford halted some output and Ottawa urged an end to the 13-day-long protests.

Many pandemic-weary Western countries will soon mark two years of restrictions as copycat protests spread to Australia, New Zealand and France now the highly infectious Omicron variant begins to ease in some places.

Horn-blaring protests have being causing gridlock in the capital Ottawa since late January and from Monday night, truckers shut inbound Canada traffic at the Ambassador Bridge, a supply route for Detroit's carmakers and agricultural products.

Texas probes shutdown of ‘Freedom Convoy’ fundraiser

The state’s AG said the crowdfunding platform engaged in “deceitful action” after it froze donations to vaccine mandate protesters in Canada

The Texas state government has opened an investigation into crowdfunding platform GoFundMe after the site shut down a campaign on behalf of Canadian truckers in the “Freedom Convoy,” a large anti-vaccination mandate protest staged primarily in Ottawa.

The state’s Attorney General Ken Paxton announced the move on Wednesday, saying he would act to “protect Texas consumers” and “get to the bottom of this deceitful action” following the platform’s decision to cancel the Freedom Convoy fund drive.

Private Members Bill to Prohibit Holocaust denial

Feb 9, 2022

A local Conservative Member of Parliament has introduced a private members bill to prohibit Holocaust denial through an amendment to the Criminal Code.

Saskatoon-Grasswood MP Kevin Waugh says “ignorance fuels intolerance, so we must continue to teach the truths of the past.”

From early 1941 until spring 1945, six million Jewish men, women and children were killed in Nazi concentration camps.

The legislation would make Holocaust denial, one of the main indicators of antisemitism and radicalization, illegal in Canada.

Suspect in Canada trucker protest hit-and-run is militant Antifa punk rocker

By Andy Ngo
February 8, 2022

The suspect arrested over the car-ramming attack against “Freedom Convoy” anti-vaccine mandate protesters in Winnipeg is an Antifa member with a long history of far-left militant activism in Canada.

David Alexander Zegarac, 42, of Headingley, Manitoba, allegedly sped off in his Jeep Patriot to try to escape after the incident last Friday, which injured four people and was caught on camera. Zegarac ran multiple lights and resisted arrest when he was finally caught around 40 minutes later, according to the Winnipeg police.

Zegarac was well-known as the frontman and vocalist of several Antifa punk bands since the early 2000s, most notably Brat Attack. He was vocal about his veganism and radical anarchist politics. However, in 2015, record label Rebel Time records dropped the group because of multiple accusations of sexual assault and rape against Zegarac. One of his anonymous accusers said she was only 13 when he allegedly groomed her and raped her. Police said he does not have a criminal history in Manitoba, though he has also lived in British Columbia and Newfoundland.

Justin Trudeau promises ‘quick action’ on trucker blockade in call with Biden

By Evan Simko-Bednarski
February 11, 2022

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised “quick action” in response to the so-called “Freedom Convoy” blockading a key border crossing on the Michigan border, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Friday.

The commitment came during a Friday call between Trudeau and President Biden over ongoing protests against Canada’s COVID-19 restrictions.

“The two leaders agreed that the actions of the individuals who are obstructing travel and commerce between our two countries are having significant direct impacts on citizens’ lives and livelihoods,” Psaki said.

“The President expressed his concern that United States companies and workers are experiencing serious effects, including slowdowns in production, shortened work hours, and plant closures,” Psaki said Friday in a readout of the call.

Canadian judge orders 7 p.m. end to border bridge blockade

By Evan Simko-Bednarski and Jesse O’Neill
February 11, 2022

A Canadian court ordered a group of trucker protestors off of a border bridge between Ontario and Michigan Friday, giving the blockade until 7 p.m. to disperse — a deadline many demonstrators decided to defy.

The so-called “Freedom Convoy” has been blocking traffic from the Ambassador Bridge for five days in protest of COVID-19 mandates, forcing plant closures and work stoppages in Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, because materials can’t get across the border.

Chief Justice Geoffrey Morawetz of the Ontario Superior Court gave the order following a four-and-a-half hour hearing, Friday, at which attorneys for the city of Windsor and auto parts manufacturers argued the protest was causing undue economic harm.

Half of Canadians say Trudeau ‘not up to the job’ - poll

Poll shows that while voters mostly disapprove of trucker protests, they largely agree that their PM has botched the crisis

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has alienated voters with his handling of the Freedom Convoy protests, a new poll shows.

Only 16% of respondents to the Maru Public Opinion poll said they would vote for Trudeau based on his actions over the past two weeks, when a protest by truck drivers against a Covid-19 vaccine mandate bubbled up into massive blockades, inspiring similar movements in several other countries. Just 29% said Trudeau had acted “like a prime minister should,” and 48% concluded that he was “not up to the job of being prime minister.”

“The last time I’ve seen numbers even close to this were in the final days of Brian Mulroney,” Maru executive vice president John Wright told the National Post newspaper. “I think this could cost him his job.”

Trump ally to send aid to Canadian truckers

MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell will send pillows to the Freedom Convoy protesters, and says he’s “got a little problem” with Justin Trudeau

MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, an outspoken conservative, pledged on Saturday to provide pillows to the truckers protesting against coronavirus restrictions in Canada. Lindell said he has a personal grudge against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and urged the truckers not to “compromise” until they win “all our freedoms” back.

“All of our employees are busy making pillows right now for the truckers in Canada. We’re going to try and get them through. I’m not going to say what day or, you know, there will be obstructionists,” Lindell told Right Side Broadcasting Network on Saturday.

Police arrest last protesters at US-Canada border, traffic set to resume

Authorities are reopening the key crossing on the US-Canada border after clearing it from ‘Freedom Convoy’ protesters

Canadian authorities made a push on Sunday to remove the last of the protesters from Ambassador Bridge and surrounding areas after having to close the border crossing in Windsor, Ontario with barricades last week.

Police began arresting non-compliant demonstrators and towing vehicles supporting the anti-Covid mandate trucker protest in Canada on Saturday. Police pushed protesters on Sunday away from the bridge before making arrests, of which there were a dozen, according to authorities.

Canada’s PM seeks emergency powers to tackle ‘Freedom Convoy’ protests – media

Justin Trudeau is reportedly seeking to invoke the never-before-used Emergencies Act to deal with Covid demonstrations gripping Canada

Canada’s prime minister is planning to invoke the Emergencies Act – never-before-used legislation granting the government extra powers to handle crisis situations – to tackle the Freedom Convoy demonstrations, broadcaster CBC reported on Monday, citing anonymous sources.

Justin Trudeau spoke about invoking the Act to quash the ongoing ‘Freedom Convoy’ protests, during a meeting with his Liberal Party caucus. According to the report, Trudeau said that he had no plans to deploy the Canadian military to the streets, should the Act be invoked. The premier is expected to address the issue with provincial premiers later in the day.

Canada invokes emergency powers to deal with trucker protest

PM Justin Trudeau invokes powers last used by his father to battle Quebec separatists in 1970

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has invoked the Emergencies Act for the first time in Canadian history on Monday, citing the threat of “Freedom Convoy” trucker protests in Ottawa and several border crossings in the US.

“This is not a peaceful protest,” Trudeau said in a speech on Monday afternoon, adding that “illegal blockades” have been “disrupting the lives of too many Canadians.”

Trudeau vows to freeze anti-mandate protesters' bank accounts

Published 1 minute ago

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has taken the unprecedented step of invoking the Emergencies Act to crack down on anti-vaccine mandate protests.

Mr Trudeau said the scope of the measures would be "time-limited", "reasonable and proportionate" and would not see the military deployed.

Without a court order, banks will be able freeze personal accounts of anyone linked with the protests.

Hundreds of protesters remain in Canada's capital city.

On Sunday, law enforcement cleared anti-mandate demonstrators at the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor - a critical pathway for Canada-US trade - after a week-long stalemate.

Thunder Bay joins campaign against Quebec’s Bill 21

City will lobby federal government to challenge legislation that limits religious expression of civil servants.

Feb 15, 2022

THUNDER BAY – The City of Thunder Bay will join a growing list of Canadian municipalities voicing their opposition to Quebec’s Bill 21.

A recommendation to take the stand from the city’s anti-racism and respect advisory committee was unanimously approved by city council Monday.

The provincial legislation prohibits public servants including teachers, police officers, and judges from wearing religious symbols like hijabs, kippas, and turbans on the job.

Mayor Bill Mauro endorsed the motion, calling on the federal government to do what it could to oppose Bill 21 in court – something it has opted not to do since the bill was introduced in 2019.

Ottawa Police Chief resigns amid Freedom Convoy pressure – media

Peter Sloly has been under fire over the force’s apparent inability to dislodge trucker-led protests

Ottawa Police chief Peter Sloly has resigned amid criticism of the force’s handling of the ongoing Freedom Convoy trucker-led protest against federal Covid-19 vaccination mandates in the Canadian capital, local media said on Tuesday. He is expected to formally announce his resignation following a police board meeting on Tuesday, CBC news reported.

Ottawa City Councillor Riley Brockington tweeted about the surprise resignation, which comes a week after Sloly said he had no plans to step down despite mounting pressure from both the federal and local governments to evict the protesters. According to CTV news, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson had given Sloly a vote of confidence on Monday, agreeing with the chief’s request for more resources from the provincial and federal governments.

More data on Canadian 'Freedom Convoy' donors leaked -website

By Christopher Bing and Anna Mehler Paperny
February 15, 2022

WASHINGTON/TORONTO, Feb 15 (Reuters) - The leak website Distributed Denial of Secrets on Tuesday said it has posted more donor files from the fundraising platform GiveSendGo relating to the Canadian movement of people opposed to pandemic health measures, including COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

On Sunday, the DDoS website, which is devoted to disseminating leaked data, said it was releasing donor information relating to the "Freedom Convoy 2022" campaign, which raised more than $2 million in donations. It includes funds raised from several Canadian business owners.

Tuesday's leak contains donor information about a similar “Adopt-a-Trucker” campaign, which says it is operating “in partnership with the Freedom Convoy." The Adopt-a-Trucker effort appeared to raise less money and involved fewer donors.

Four “Freedom Convoy” protesters with an arsenal of guns who were ready to “use force against the police” have been charged with conspiring to commit murder, Canadian authorities said.

The group were among 11 arrested on Monday at the now-cleared border blockade in Coutts, Alberta, just north of Montana, who were protesting the country’s COVID-19 restrictions, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said Tuesday in a statement.

Protesters defy police presence in Ottawa after officers warn of crackdown

Leyland Cecco in Ottawa
Fri 18 Feb 2022 01.59 GMT

Truckers who have blockaded downtown Ottawa for nearly three weeks have defied a growing police presence in the Canadian capital and ignored repeated warnings that they could face steep fines and possible arrest.

Officers had warned of an impending crackdown on Thursday, as busloads of police reinforcements arrived in the city and work crews took the rare step of erecting metal fences outside the senate and parliament.

Despite heavy rain, supporters flocked to Parliament Hill, while the mood of imminent confrontation receded. “I ain’t going anywhere,” said Pat King, one of protest organizers. “I haven’t overstayed my welcome. My taxes paid for me to be here.”

One of the leaders of the so-called “freedom convoy” was arrested as the interim police chief warned that action was “imminent”. Chris Barber was taken into custody on Thursday afternoon and was set to face criminal charges.
