Canada set to legalize MAID for drug addicts

When Canada expands doctor-assisted suicide — or medical assistance in dying (MAID) — next year to people whose sole condition is that they struggle from severe mental illness, it is looking increasingly likely that the government will also allow people who are addicted to drugs to qualify as well. Many have described this latest dystopian move in Canada’s increasingly expanding MAID regime as eugenics.

Ontario judge rules that calling drag queens ‘groomers’ is defamatory

Nieckarz was appointed to her post by former Trudeau government Attorney General David Lametti.

David Krayden
Dec 20, 2023

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has ruled it "defamatory" to label drag queens as "groomers" and using such terminology is not protected by Canada's free speech laws.

According to The Counter Signal, the decision is part of a ruling in the case of Rainbow Alliance Dryden (RAD) et al v. Webster, with Justice Tracey Nieckarz determining that "it is reasonable to conclude that the suggestion that … drag performers are 'groomers', merely because of their sexual or performance identity, is defamatory."

Nieckarz was appointed to her post by former Trudeau government Attorney General David Lametti. The judge's ruling pertained to a case between the RAD and Brian Webster, a blogger who called drag queens groomers.

B.C. seniors at risk of ‘catastrophic’ evictions, advocate says

By Darryl Greer The Canadian Press
Posted December 24, 2023 3:08 pm

British Columbia seniors who face eviction from long-term, affordable rental housing face “catastrophic” consequences and a growing number of older residents are at risk of becoming homeless, says the province’s seniors advocate.

Everyone deserves to be adequately housed, Isobel Mackenzie said in an interview with The Canadian Press, but she noted the growing need for homes earmarked for seniors has become particularly dire for those with low, fixed incomes during what should be their golden years.

Data compiled and released by Metro Vancouver this month show the BC Housing wait-list for social housing has 18,865 households on it, with seniors and families in the greatest need.

That’s a 27 per cent jump from 2022, and although the BC Housing wait-list doesn’t provide the full picture across the province for social housing needs, the increase doesn’t surprise Mackenzie.

Canada ‘not ready’ to expand assisted dying for mental health: minister

By Sean Boynton Global News
Posted January 29, 2024 4:50 pm

Canada is “not ready” to expand eligibility for medical assistance in dying (MAiD) to people with mental health as their sole medical condition, Health Minister Mark Holland said Monday.

Holland said the government agrees with a joint parliamentary committee report released earlier Monday that reached the same conclusion, and that assisted death should only be offered to such patients when it can be “safely and adequately provided.”

The minister said the government plans to table a response to the report in the coming days that will ask for more time to implement the change, but did not say how much time the government will be asking for beyond the current March deadline.

“We agree with the conclusion that the committee has come to that the system is, at this time, not ready and more time is required,” Holland told reporters.

Canada clocks fastest population growth in 66 years in 2023

By Promit Mukherjee
March 27, 2024 6:42 PM GMT+1

OTTAWA, March 27 (Reuters) - Canada's population touched a record high of 40.77 million in 2023, largely driven by temporary immigration, Statistics Canada said on Wednesday. The country added 1.27 million people in 2023, up 3.2% from the previous year - marking the highest growth since 1957.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

The influx of immigrants has been blamed for a housing shortage that has pushed up house prices and sent affordability to new lows, hurting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's approval ratings. The population growth has also pulled down the country's gross domestic product per capita figures as seen in the last quarter as well as productivity levels, economists and the Bank of Canada have said.
