NATO hopeful holds rare air drills

Finland prepares to fly sorties from highways should its air bases come under attack

Finland’s Air Force has closed a major highway for the first time in decades to hold military exercises, with warplanes using the road as a makeshift runway as the country’s armed forces conduct exercises citing the alleged “threat from Russia.”

Finnish F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets, as well as dozens of Hawk Mk. 51 training aircraft and other military planes, staged takeoffs and landings at the Joutsa road base in Central Finland on Wednesday, the head of Finland’s Air Force Academy, Colonel Vesa Mantyla, told Reuters.

Erdogan will only back one Nordic country's NATO bid

Finland and Sweden may join the bloc separately, the Turkish leader said, but Ankara is only ready to support Finland’s request

Türkiye is now ready to greenlight Finland’s entry into NATO but is not prepared to do the same for Sweden, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday, suggesting that the two Nordic countries could join the alliance at separate times.

Speaking at a press conference in Prague, the Turkish leader revealed that Ankara’s relations with Finland “are different from those with Sweden.” In Erdogan’s opinion, “Finland is not a country where terrorists are roaming freely,” while Sweden is “a place where terror is rampant.”

“So, regarding Finland and Sweden, NATO will have to make a decision. If they make a decision that is in favor of Finland, of course we will do everything that we are required to,” Erdogan said.

Finland interested in European anti-aircraft defence system

Reuters

HELSINKI, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Finland is interested in the development of a European anti-aircraft defence system but would not take a very central role in it, Finnish Defence Minister Antti Kaikkonen told reporters on Wednesday, after meeting with NATO peers in Brussels.

In September, German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht said in a Reuters interview that Berlin aimed to strike a deal with other NATO countries on the air defence system during the ongoing defence minister meeting in Brussels on Oct. 12-13.

Finland and neighbouring Sweden are applying for membership in the Western military alliance NATO and were invited to join the meeting as official applicants.

Turkey and Hungary remain the only two NATO member countries which have not yet ratified the Finnish and Swedish memberships.

Union: Fifth of Finnish households couldn’t handle any rise in cost of living

FINLAND 11 OCTOBER 2022

A FIFTH of Finnish households are not in a position to withstand any further increases in the cost of living, reports the Consumers’ Union of Finland.

The Consumers’ Union on Friday reported that financial difficulties are common particularly among single-parent households, with 31 per cent of them saying they have absolutely no financial cushion to cope with an increase in the cost of living without risking ending up in distress.

A quarter of one-person households similarly stated that they have no financial wiggle room.

“The Consumers’ Union is extremely worried about households that have no or only little financial wiggle room to respond to an increase in cost of living,” stated Juha Beurling-Pomoell, the secretary general of the Consumers’ Union.

“Unpaid electricity bills are already evident in the number of payment defaults,” he added, pointing to the latest statistics from Asiakastieto. “The number of payment defaults caused by unpaid electricity bills has already increased by 18 per cent this year, even thought the winter heating season is only now starting.”

NATO applicant outlines stance on hosting nuclear weapons

Finnish PM Sanna Marin won’t rule out the US-led bloc deploying weapons of mass destruction in the Nordic country

NATO could establish permanent bases or deploy nuclear weapons in Finland once the country joins the bloc, Prime Minister Sanna Marin has warned, although she added that the latter scenario is unlikely.

“I’ve considered it very important that we don’t set these kinds of pre-conditions, or limit our own room for maneuvering, when it comes to permanent bases or nuclear weapons,” Marin said on Finland’s Yle TV1 channel on Saturday.

She promptly qualified her statement by adding that such a development was not necessarily on the cards.

Criminals in Finland obtain weapons from Ukraine – police

Arms supplied to Kiev have also allegedly been found in Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands

Criminals in Finland have got hold of some of the weapons that were sent to Ukraine by its Western backers amid the conflict with Russia, the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has said.

“We've seen signs of these weapons already finding their way to Finland,” NBI detective superintendent Christer Ahlgren told the news outlet Yle on Sunday.

Assault rifles were among the weaponry, Ahlgren said, but declined to provide further details, as the investigation is still ongoing.

Arms trafficking routes from Ukraine to Finland have already been set up, according to the investigator.

Artists are boycotting Finland’s national gallery over an Israeli billionaire on its board

BY DAVID I. KLEIN DECEMBER 7, 2022 12:54 PM

(JTA) — Nearly 130 Finnish artists will not be working with Kiasma, the modern art wing of Finland’s national gallery, they announced, in protest of a Finnish-Israeli billionaire who supports the gallery and has connections to both countries’ arms industries.

The artists had signed the statement by Monday after the museum refused to remove a representative of the Zabludowicz Art Trust from its board. The trust was funded and established by Chaim “Poju” Zabludowicz, a Finnish-Israeli billionaire who is the son of Shalom Zabludowicz, a Polish-born Jew and Auschwitz survivor who made his fortune by connecting the Finnish and Israeli arms industries.

“As art workers, we expect the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art to refuse financial or other support from private parties involved in arms trading or manufacturing and financial investments in conflict zones,” the statement reads.

Poju Zabludowicz today lives in the United Kingdom and is in charge of Tamares, the family’s holding company, which invests largely in real estate, though it still has some connections to the Israeli and Finnish defense industries. He has also been involved in pro-Israel advocacy, establishing the Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre (BICOM) pro-Israel lobbying group. He donated heavily to Britain’s Conservative party a decade ago.

We should have listened to our Baltic and Polish friends much sooner - Finnish PM

2022-12-02 LETA/AFP/TBT Staff

SYDNEY - Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin on Friday offered a "brutally honest" assessment of Europe's capabilities in the wake of Russia's war on Ukraine, stating bluntly that "we're not strong enough" to stand up to Moscow alone.

Visiting Australia, the leader of the pending NATO member said Vladimir Putin's invasion and occupation of neighboring Ukraine had exposed both European weaknesses and strategic blunders in dealing with Russia.

"I must be very honest, brutally honest with you, Europe isn't strong enough right now. We would be in trouble without the United States," she told Sydney's Lowy Institute think tank.

Marin insisted Ukraine must be given "whatever it takes" to win the war, adding that the United States had been pivotal in supplying Kyiv with the weapons, finance and humanitarian aid necessary to blunt Russia's advance.

"We have to make sure that we are also building those capabilities when it comes to European defense, the European defense industry, and making sure that we could cope in different kinds of situations," she said.

Finland won independence from Russia almost 105 years ago and inflicted heavy casualties on an invading Soviet army soon after despite being hugely outgunned.

Blinken: U.S. will be able to call Sweden, Finland NATO allies soon

By Michael Martina and Daphne Psaledakis

WASHINGTON, Dec 8 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday said he is convinced the United States will be able to call Sweden and Finland NATO allies soon and said Turkey's concerns about the two nations joining the alliance are being addressed.

Blinken, speaking at a press briefing following meetings at the State Department with his Swedish and Finnish counterparts, said that the two nations are already integrating into the work of the alliance.

"This is not a bilateral issue between the United States and Turkey. And it's not going to turn into one," Blinken said, adding that Finland and Sweden have had a productive process working with Turkey to address concerns and concrete steps have been taken.

"I have every expectation that both will formally become members soon."

Openly fascist and racist party has set its sights on parliamentary elections

FINLAND 15 DECEMBER 2022

Supporters of Sinimusta Liike took part in a nationalist protest in Helsinki on Independence Day, 6 December 2022. Sinimusta Liike, an openly fascist and racist organisation, was entered into the party register last summer and has set its sights on winning at least one seat in the Finnish Parliament in 2023, reports STT. (Emmi Korhonen – Lehtikuva)

SINIMUSTA LIIKE, a newly registered political party, has morphed into an umbrella organisation for far-right movements in Finland, writes STT.

The Finnish news agency reported early this month that the organisation is made up of members of the radical wing of the former youth organisation of the Finns Party, anti-immigrant street patrol group Soldiers of Odin and dissolved neo-Nazi group Nordic Resistance Movement (PVL).

Sinimusta Liike (Eng. Blue-and-black movement) has announced its goal to nominate candidates in all electoral districts for the upcoming parliamentary elections and come away with at least one seat in the Finnish Parliament. The party states on its website that it intends to offer radical nationalists a vessel for participating in parliamentary decision-making instead of having to “settle for operating in the shadows”.

Tommi Kotonen, a research professor at the University of Jyväskylä, viewed that the registration of the party marks the most important development in the far-right space in Finland since 2020, when the Supreme Court banned the Nordic Resistance Movement.
(...)
Sinimusta Liike markets itself as a nationalist-radical party that aims to protect the interests of white Finns and foster the Finnish way of life.

“We’re a party that maintains a racial identity. So you can think of us as a racist radical-right movement in the sense that we do feel that Finns are more valuable than foreign populations,”
Tuukka Kuru, a former member of Finns Party Youth and the chairperson of Sinimusta Liike, summarised to STT.

Davos 2023: Finland hopes Turkish minister's U.S. trip will boost its NATO membership bid

By John Irish

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Finland said on Tuesday it hoped that Turkey's foreign minister's trip to the United States this week would bring positive impetus for it and Sweden's bids to join NATO, which have been held up as they lack backing from Turkey and Hungary.

The two Nordic states applied last year to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) following Russia's invasion of Ukraine but their bids must be approved by all 30 NATO member states. Turkey and Hungary have yet to endorse the applications.

Finland says time-out needed in talks with Turkey over NATO bid

By Essi Lehto

HELSINKI, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Finland's foreign minister said on Tuesday a time-out of a few weeks was needed in Finland and Sweden's talks with Turkey on their application to join the NATO military alliance.

Turkey's president said on Monday that Sweden should not expect his country's support after a protest near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm at the weekend, which included the burning of a copy of the Koran.

"A time-out is needed before we return to the three-way talks and see where we are when the dust has settled after the current situation, so no conclusions should be drawn yet," Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto told Reuters in a telephone interview.

Finland Improves Trans Rights Allowing Gender Self-Declaration

By Leo Laikola
February 1, 2023 at 1:33 PM GMT+1

Finland passed a law that will improve the rights of transgender people, removing obstacles and cutting red tape around the legal process for recognizing their gender.

The new law, passed by the parliament on Wednesday, allows those over 18 years of age to self-declare their gender and have it legally recognized. The law also removes a requirement to prove infertility.

The revamp, approved with 113 votes in favor versus 69 against, was one of the key legislative efforts of millennial Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s government, whose five parties are all led by women. The previous law had last been updated more than two decades ago and included a requirement to have doctors sign off on the legal change of gender.

The debate in parliament was contentious, with most criticism levied by the more conservative and religious lawmakers. Some opposition Finns Party members argued that allowing self-declaration of gender could potentially give criminals another layer behind which to hide their identity, while others said men could use it to avoid military service.

Finland is ready to join NATO without Sweden

A majority of Finns back joining the defense alliance without Sweden, and sources suggest the Finnish government is prepared to do so without its neighbor

February 06, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: THOMAS BROOKE

The Finnish government is prepared to join NATO without Sweden, foreign and security policy sources have confirmed to the Iltalehti newspaper.

Both countries applied for membership in the defense alliance in May last year, but Finland is faring better in overcoming the stumbling block posed by Turkey, which has yet to ratify either country’s application.

Talks between Ankara and Stockholm have stalled due to longstanding concerns over Swedish support to anti-government groups deemed by Turkey to be terrorists. Tensions were inflamed further last month after the Swedish government sanctioned an anti-Islam protest outside the Turkish embassy in Stockholm during which a copy of the Quran was burned, sparking outrage across the Islamic world.

“The Turks do not have a problem with Finland’s membership in NATO,” a foreign and security policy source told the Finnish newspaper on Monday.

YLE: Most Finnish political parties ready, if necessary, to join Nato before Sweden

FINLAND 21 FEBRUARY 2023

FINLAND and Sweden joining Nato together and without delay remains the primary objective for all political parties in the Finnish Parliament, reveals a survey conducted by YLE.

The Finnish public broadcasting company reported late last week that the majority of political parties are nevertheless prepared to join the military alliance before Sweden, a possibility that has emerged as Turkey continues to air objections about the membership bid of Sweden.
(...)
Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto (Greens) on Saturday said Turkey views that Finland has satisfied the membership criteria but that additional negotiations are necessary with Sweden. Turkey has hinted at the possibility of ratifying the two membership applications at different times also previously.

The Finnish Parliament, meanwhile, has decided to finalise its part of the process before the parliamentary elections in order to make sure the process can move forward as soon as possible after the membership application has been ratified by the two remaining holdouts, Hungary and Turkey.

Finland to send three Leopard tanks to Ukraine

Reuters

HELSINKI, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Finland will send three Leopard 2 tanks suitable for mine clearing to Ukraine and provide training for their use, the Finnish defence ministry said on Thursday.

Kyiv has secured pledges from several Western nations to supply modern battlefield tanks to help fend off Russia's invasion, as Moscow bids to make incremental advances in eastern Ukraine.

The three tanks to be donated by Finland, which shares a 1,300-km border with Russia, have been built on the base of 2A4 type Leopards equipped with machine guns and are intended to be used to clear ground mines before the main battle tanks are brought onto the battle field, defence minister Mikko Savola said.
