Default Get Ready For A Close Encounter With A Massive Asteroid!

Get Ready For A Close Encounter With A Massive Asteroid!

Earlier this month, millions of Americans were treated to a rare spectacle: a total solar eclipse that was visible from coast-to-coast. While Florence, a massive asteroid that will zip past our planet on September 1, will not overshadow the stunning event, it will make history of its own. According to Paul Chodas at the Center for Near Earth Object (NEO) Studies, the space rock is the largest to pass this close to our planet since the first near-Earth asteroid was discovered over a century ago.

From the article:

"..it is close enough to view with binoculars and telescopes from late August to early September. More importantly, Florence’s proximity will give scientists the rare opportunity to observe the asteroid in detail. Studying this largely unaltered rock debris, from when the solar system was created about 4.6 billion years ago, will give researchers some insights into the formation process of Earth and other planets.."

"..Discovered in March 1981 by American astronomer Schelte “Bobby” Bus at Australia’s Siding Spring Observatory, Florence was named after Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The asteroid hasn’t been this close to Earth since 1890, and won’t approach us again until 2500.."

This should be big news, and yet our 'culture' does not find this as interesting as knee grow sporting events, "reality" shows, and other assorted 'street theater'. Sad.

Most especially the fact that it will give new insights into the formation of Earth...of course there are those who do not want us to find such things interesting, it's not to their advantage for people to be smart, or interested in true 'reality'.

Huge Asteroid 'Florence' Zooms Past Earth in Record-Breaking Flyby

At 8:06 a.m. EDT (1206 GMT) today, the roughly 2.7-mile-wide (4.4 kilometers) asteroid 3122 Florence came within a mere 4.4 million miles (7 million km) of Earth — just 18 times the distance from our planet to the moon.

"Nothing this big has passed this close to Earth since we've been tracking," Paul Chodas, manager of the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, told Space.com. "This is a once-in-40-year-event kind of thing."

Radar Reveals Two Moons Orbiting Asteroid Florence

Radar images of asteroid 3122 Florence obtained at the 70-meter antenna at NASA's Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex between August 29 and September 1 have revealed that the asteroid has two small moons.

It also confirmed that main asteroid Florence is about 4.5 km (2.8 miles) in size.

Florence is only the third triple asteroid known in the near-Earth population out of more than 16,400 that have been discovered to date. All three near-Earth asteroid triples have been discovered with radar observations and Florence is the first seen since two moons were discovered around asteroid 1994 CC in June 2009.

One day a dinosaur-killing asteroid is going to target earth, and when it does we'd better have something like this:

In 'The Paradise Syndrome' not even the Enterprise's phasers were able to destroy the asteroid. They had to end up using the Preservers' deflector on the Amerind Planet to prevent a collision.

NASA, the DoD and other agencies and scientists have been trying to come up with a solution for a possible asteroid collision with Earth for many years. About all we have with present technology is attempting to destroy it with nuclear weapons or attaching rockets, either chemical or ion-powered to the body to nudge it out of a collision course with us. One problem with nukes is the blast could shatter the asteroid into many smaller pieces and end up with even more space rocks slamming into Earth. Or the body might be too massive to boost it away with rocket propulsion. Either way, it's one hell of a problem. Barring that, given enough warning time, the only other answer is large-scale evacuations of populations away from the asteroid's predicted impact area.

True, but in For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky, the Enterprise was able to deflect the asteroid-world "Yonada" with its deflector beam, as shown below:

I agree, and so would the dinosaurs.

In that episode Kirk and Spock accessed Yonada's own controls to alter its course. The screenshot is from 'The Paradise Syndrome.' Is this now a Star Trek thread?

I stand corrected. However, the scene with the Enterprise and the asteroid was used twice in Star Trek, first in The Paradise Syndrome than once again in For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky. And additional segment, with the deflector beam effect, was added for The Paradise Syndrome. Other than for that, the same footage was used in both episodes.

It's a hybrid. It's hard to talk about real space events without sci-fi being mentioned, and vice versa.
