Talking Friday the 13th: The most baffling French superstitions

Friday the 13th: The most baffling French superstitions

The French have some positively unusual superstitions. Here's a selection.

While the French may not fear the dreaded Friday the 13th as much as some others, they still remain a superstitious bunch.

Many of their seemingly irrational beliefs match those held in other countries, like the idea that spilling salt on the table will bring bad luck. But other superstitions appear to be more unique to France.

Here are some of the strangest.

I will now forever blame my mom's side of the family with the French for my affinity for polka dots, and hatred of bread being left wrong side up.

Seems I remember Varg V talking about this. When the annual calendar is based on months with 28 days, coinciding with a womans monthly cycle, the result is a 13 month year. Pagan calendar. The bad luck of 13 is a Christian concept. Everything about Christianity is an attack on nature.

My Balkan-derived Mom once beat me for putting my dad's hat on a bed. She totally ballistic. I guess I got back at her, though, having inadvertently rocked an empty rocking chair.
