Default The Hero

This is a new Sam Elliot movie. Sam plays Lee Haydon, a cowboy actor who had one big success forty years ago, and now gets by doing commercials for barbecue sauce. He's a strong character and yet disappointed by life, and uses a lot of pot to keep going, supplied by Nick Offerman, a former co-star.
Lee has a broken marriage, a daughter he barely knows, and when he meets Laura Prepon, a customer of Offerman and performance artist in her thirties who becomes interested in Lee, he becomes interested. Out of the blue Lee gets an award for lifetime achievement, and he reluctantly accepts, taking Prepon along.
He plays the performer, charming his audience, and in an odd bit calls a fan up to give her his award. It's strange but gets on Youtube and makes Lee a celebrity, even getting him a part in a movie.
All of this is darkened by a diagnosis he has pancreatic cancer, a death sentence.
Lee has to begin coping with his demise. There are dreams, lingering shots of the ocean, and Lee sees he has to make his peace and become reconciled to his transformation. Lee has conflict where he deals with new-found fame and dealing with larger issues of where his place in the cosmos will be.
The movie has been called cliched and also a magnificent Elliot film worthy of an oscar. I found it enjoyable (Elliot is always great to see), and it is a thoughtful commentary on making peace with the world and yourself, accepting your life and making peace, making love with people put into your path. It has a good supporting cast, and very watchable. Also, as I've noted in a lot of recent indie films, it's nigger free. No 'black buddy as best friend Morgan Freeman b.s.', and it's pleasurable to see a white cast for a change, and a mature look at life.
