Default Africa Addio

Roger Ebert-"Africa Addio" is a brutal, dishonest, racist film. It slanders a continent and at the same time diminishes the human spirit. And it does so to entertain us.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Africa Addio is a 1966 Italian documentary film about the end of the colonial era in Africa. The film was released under the names "Africa Blood and Guts" in the USA (which was only half of the entire film) and "Farewell Africa" in the UK. The movie documents some of the disruptions caused by decolonization, such as poaching in former animal preserves and bloody revolutions, including the Zanzibar revolution which resulted in the massacre of approximately 5000 Arabs in 1964.[1] In most of its edited incarnations, the movie leaves out mention of similar atrocities that were committed under colonial powers. While the film claims to dispassionately show reality, it has been criticized as biased by many viewers over the years (perhaps most notably Roger Ebert).

The film was shot over a period of three years, by Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi, two Italian filmmakers who had gained fame a few years earlier (with co-director Paolo Cavara) as the directors of Mondo Cane in 1962. This film launched the so-called Mondo film genre, a cycle of documentaries or "shockumentaries" which often featured sensational topics, of which "Africa Addio" is arguably a part (it is included in the "Mondo Cane Collection" currently being distributed by Blue Underground).

The film has been hailed as a masterpiece (for instance, by Conrad H. Roth) but has also been consistently criticized as being racist, misleading, exploitive, or staged. Criticism has led to the creation of many cuts of the film, as well as its outright ban in some markets.

[edit] Controversy
Many of the scenes (however true) appear to contain gratuitous violence. That is, the excessive violence might be for shock value or considered as historic archive. Like many of the Mondo documentaries, "Africa Addio" has been accused of sensationalism and exploitation.
Charges of racism:
The film has been banned as racist in Italy and England.

In his 1967 Review of the film, Roger Ebert called it "...Brutal, dishonest, racist..." In his review, he points particularly to a number of unlikely assertions and sequences on the part of the filmmakers, and the likelihood of a number of scenes being staged. Particularly, he questions the sequence where Boers leave Kenya in cattle-drawn wagons, the hunting sequence where the narration suggests that 10,000 Africans converge on an area "the size of Rhode Island" and the assertion that Africans slaughtered massive numbers of Hippos for food. Moreover, he argues that the filmmakers have set up various scenes. In particular, a scene where an Elephant is killed by a poacher seems to implicate the filmmakers in staging the event. [4] It's difficult to know what cut of the film Ebert saw; its possible he saw the American cut released at the time under the title "Africa Blood and Guts" which runs at 83 minutes and removes much of the political and social context. The review currently online, however, lists the title as "Africa Addio," and the film was not released in America as "Africa Blood and Guts" until 1970, while Ebert reviewed the film in 1967, so he may also have seen one of the longer cuts which bear that name.

Co-Director Gualtiero Jacopetti was accused of murder and tried in Italy due to accusations that one of the executions which appears in the film was staged for the camera. He was acquitted.[5]

The film has had accusations that parts of it were staged or even "created" leveled against it from various critics over the years. The directors deny this, claiming in the documentary about their work "The Godfathers of Mondo" that the only scenes they ever staged were in Mondo Cane 2. [6]

Adi18- This is basically the birth of Shockumentary, a very interesting time before political correctness took over, and these Italians know how to make amazing films.
This film to africa is roughly the equivalent of "Birth of a Nation" in a black history class, or "Triumph of the Will" to a jewish school.
This film started the Mondo Cane style film, something I recently discovered.
Warning, if your an animal rights activist you probably don't want to watch this.

They recently released Africa Addio as part of the Mondo Cane box set, released through blue underground.

Here is the whole Mondo Cane box set, beware though, Africa Addio has been released many times, the Mondo Cane series is the best version apparantly.
Check it out here, you can order it on amazon. There's also bit torrents I came across of the Mondo Cane series if your familiar with that.

Actually, the directors made Mondo Cane several years earlier and that is considered the birth of shockumentaries (of that era, anyways). That film also has many great scenes in it that so the wonders of Africa. There's also a great scene that shows hundreds of beautiful White Australian girls in bikinis - now that's a shocking scene you'll never see again.

However, Africa Addio is a far more daring film and less reliant on staged scenes. The film crew where perhaps the only people around that documented the end of colonization in Africa.

That fat pig Roger Ebert is married to a negress. Any movie that shows niggers as niggers, he claims is racist.

This is why you have to understand the different versions of it, for instance Africa Blood and Guts is only about 80 minutes and focuses mainly on carnage, where the beauty of the film lies in the scenes like you mentioned above. (Don't forget the jazz niggers, that made me roflmao)

This film though has alot of the same controversy as "Triumph of the Will" etc... Alot of critics state that the filming techniques and the use of music is revolutionary, so it has it's values still even to the average viewer.

These Italians though, I love to hear them talk about the films in their interviews, like the music guy is saying "Ruggero brings such violence to the film, basically all you can do is put beautiful music and find a nice happy medium, it's all on the film, all I could do was add this operatic style music to the beauty of it". A very good example of the genious of the film also lies in the scene you mention above, it's also very reminicent of Leni Reifenstahl's Olymipa Diving scene, the part with those beautiful Aryan women jumping on trampolines with those lush ample bodies.........

Jolly good film though, one of those things you wonder why I haven't I ever heard of it before?

The guys who made the film were so viciously attacked for it that they followed it up with an anti-white pseudo-documentary called Goodbye Uncle Tom, hoping to clear their names and prove they weren't racists. David Duke talks about Goodbye Uncle Tom in his book. I'm not sure Duke realized that it was made by the same people who made Africa Addio, though, so you have to take what he writes with a grain of salt.

Well that's life for a movie maker, the beautiful thing though is Africa Addio is captured forever on film, and that's the most important part. These filmmakers never claimed to be WN or fascist or anything, so really there's no issue. What's at issue is these guys made a film that really showed the brutal truth about what africa is all about, and the parts where you see blacks executing other blacks via firing squad, it's almost to beautiful to put into words.
David Duke isn't a film critic, and the controversy I mean is that the filmmaking techniques are so good that even if you don't like the material, you have to appreciate the actual techniques still, which is the main part of filmmaking. It's like in UCLA film school they study "Triumph of the Will", because it's that damn good, regardless of what it's about. Good imput though comrade, this film style is very new to me, when hollywood has let you down, go back in time.

This is actually the film I saw that introduced me to this genre of film, my brother borrowed it to me and it was one of those films I had for a couple weeks questioning should I watch this? It wasn't until I read in the linear about how the Blair witch project was a complete rip off of this whole film and it's unorthodox advertising, only this is back from 1980. The interesting story behind this film is Ruggero was actually arrested, the film siezed, and he was put on trial for 4 counts of first-degree murder, and he had to track down the actors to prove that this wasn't just a snuff film. He faced a life sentence, luckily he found the actors, and got acquitted. That is filmmaking though.

Here's the trailor, it's basically all the sickest scenes put together, be warned

Actually that trailor is nothing compared to this one, maybe you'll understand my dillema at first about watching this film, as in would I still be sane after?

Quote:
[edit] Original Italian controversy
The original controversy surrounding the film's release was the belief that Cannibal Holocaust was an actual snuff film, or that the actors were murdered in order to film their deaths for the movie. The film was confiscated ten days after premiering in Milan and Deodato was arrested. The courts believed not only that the four actors portraying the missing film crew were killed for the camera, but that the actress in the impalement scene was actually skewered in such a manner. To make matters worse for Deodato, the actors had signed contracts with him and the producers ensuring that they would not appear in any type of media, motion pictures or commercials for one year after the film's release in order to promote the idea that the film was truly the recovered footage of missing documentarians. Thus, when Deodato claimed that he had not killed the group, questions arose as to why the actors were in no other media if they were alive.[1][9]

Eventually, Deodato was able to prove that the violence was staged. He contacted Luca Barbareschi and told him to gather the other three actors. After voiding the contracts in order to avoid life in prison, Deodato brought the foursome onto the set of an Italian television show, which satisfied the courts. He still faced the challenge, however, of proving that the impalement scene was merely special effects. In court, he explained how the effect was achieved: a bicycle seat was attached to the end of an iron pole, upon which the actress sat. She then took a short length of balsa wood and held it in her mouth and looked skyward, thus making it look like she had been impaled. Deodato also provided pictures of the girl interacting with the crew after the scene had been filmed. After being presented with this evidence, the courts dropped all murder charges against Deodato.[1][9]

Although Deodato was exonerated for murder, the courts still wished to ban the film because of its extreme nature. The decision was made to ban Cannibal Holocaust because of the genuine animal slayings, citing animal cruelty laws. Due to this ruling, Deodato, the producers, screenwriter, and the United Artists representative each received a four-month suspended sentence after being convicted of obscenity and violence. Deodato spent three additional years fighting in the courts to get his film unbanned. In 1984, the courts ruled in favor of Deodato, and Cannibal Holocaust was granted a rating certificate of VM18 for a cut print (it would later be re-released uncut).[1][9]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannibal_Holocaust
Here is the complete film, if you like Africa Addio the big part about this movie Cannibal holocaust is this short film in the middle of it called "the last road to hell".
Quote:
The Last Road to Hell is a mini-documentary in Cannibal Holocaust that the missing film crew had previously shot. It consists of real-life firing-squad executions. Director Ruggero Deodato says the footage is from Nigeria.

Most DVDs, even those that claim to be uncut, are missing around five to ten seconds of footage. This is because the original film negatives were damaged during the film-to-DVD transfer. The DVD that has the complete footage of The Last Road to Hell is the EC Entertainment 2-disc limited edition DVD. The Grindhouse Releasing/Siren Visual DVDs also have the full Last Road to Hell footage in the special features.
That footage is beautiful, Niggers killing other niggers point blank range, and the shits for real!
You can find "the last road to hell" at the 41:00 mark roughly, it's mondo excellent!

Instead of me creating thread after thread for every post, this is going to be the exploitation/Shockumentary film thread. The most infamous of all is Guinea Pig. My introduction to Guinea Pig was about a month ago reading about the Mondo Cane series and someone asking "is it guinea Pigish?". Right over my head.

Here's how the series was introduced to america
Quote:
[edit] Charlie Sheen causes drama

While chilling with fellow hollywood faggots on a party with hookers and blow, actor Charlie Sheen watched "Flowers of Flesh and Blood"(Guinea Pig series) and being the complete retard that he is, mistook it for a real snuff flic and shat himself in the process. He then went whining on his livejournal about how the movie scarred him for life, that he can't unsee it and that disgusting torture and murder videos like this should be banned to protect the nations youth from their negative influence. He also complained to to the FBI who then proceeded to send the party van to track down the makers of the movie, only to find out that the shitty gore effects were indeed not real.
So Charlie Sheen, being the good cocaine snorting prostitute exploiting man he is, coming down off of a few days of Cocaine use and partying, decides to put on a porno, sees this, calls the FBI, and the rest goes down in film history.

Warning!!! Seriously Sick Shit

Now that you've been warned.....

DO YOU HAVE A GRUDGE?

P.S. Watching the making of these films is pretty good therapy after seeing one.
