Sunken WW2 aircraft carrier 'Lexington' found off Australia
USS Lexington (CV-2), the US navy's second aircraft carrier, sunk 8 May 1942 during the Battle of the Coral Sea, has been found on 4 March 2018 by Microsoft founder Paul Allen's team resting 11,000 feet underwater. The ship is in three pieces and a number of its aircraft, including a F4F Wildcat fighter, SBD Dauntless dive bombers and TBD Devastator torpedo bombers in remarkably pristine condition have been photographed.
In August 2017, Allen's team located and photographed the wreck of the heavy cruiser Indianapolis, sunk by a Japanese submarine in 1945 18,000 feet down in the Philippine Sea.

Yes, I was thinking this ship would be found eventually with the underwater technology we have today. You probably know about HMAS Sydney, that was located several years ago in even deeper water. Perhaps the four Jap carriers sunk during the Battle of Midway will be found. The one American carrier sunk there, USS Yorktown, was found by Robert Ballard in 1998. There are two more US fleet carriers sunk in WW2 that are still out there, Wasp and Hornet, both sunk later in 1942 after Lexington.

This month also marks the 100th anniversary of the disappearance of the coaling ship USS Cyclops in March 1918 in the so-called Bermuda Triangle. After the loss of Flight 19 in 1945, the Cyclops is one of the most famous disappearances in Bermuda Triangle lore. What an amazing find that would be. Not quite as spectacular as the Titanic, but an incredible discovery nonetheless. http://bermudatrianglecentral.blogsp...s-cyclops.html

Lexington's nearly identical sister ship Saratoga (CV-3) ended up as a target, along with other surplus warships for the two nuclear bomb tests, called Able and Baker, of Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll in 1946. The second blast occurred underwater and sunk the carrier.

It's a shame Paul Allen or someone can't at least salvage some of the Lex's aircraft, especially the ones in the video footage that are located in the debris field a distance away from the ship. There are no surviving examples of the Douglas TBD Devastator torpedo bomber in museums, and only a few Grumman F4F Wildcat fighters. Lexington herself is considered a war grave, since 216 of her crew went down with the ship. The navy still considers its ships, even sunken ones its property, so there are a number of legal barriers to any kind of salvage operations, unless the navy approves it. Also it may be impossible with today's technology to retrieve a damaged, fragile 76-year-old airplane from 10,000 feet at the bottom of the ocean without totally destroying it. So they will probably remain there as museum pieces on the sea floor for the foreseeable future.

Something strange about these shipwrecks Paul Allen's team has been finding, is there seem to be very few photos and video footage released. The Indianapolis was found back in August 2017, and the Japanese battleship Musashi was found in 2015. So far I've found nothing new on either ship since then, just the same few pictures. How long does it take to edit and release this material? We got tons of pictures of the Titanic and Bismarck even in the 1980s when they were discovered, so what's the story?

It turns out there is a 2 hour-long video of the Musashi. We'll just have to be patient with the newer wreck discoveries.
