WorldHungary far-right leader discovers Jewish roots

Csanad Szegedi

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — As a rising star in Hungary's far-right Jobbik Party, Csanad Szegedi was notorious for his incendiary comments on Jews: He accused them of "buying up" the country, railed about the "Jewishness" of the political elite and claimed Jews were desecrating national symbols.

Then came a revelation that knocked him off his perch as ultra-nationalist standard-bearer: Szegedi himself is a Jew. Following weeks of Internet rumors, Szegedi acknowledged in June that his grandparents on his mother's side were Jews — making him one too under Jewish law, even though he doesn't practice the faith. His grandmother was an Auschwitz survivor and his grandfather a veteran of forced labor camps.

Since then, the 30-year-old has become a pariah in Jobbik and his political career is on the brink of collapse. He declined to be interviewed for this story. At the root of the drama is an audio tape of a 2010 meeting between Szegedi and a convicted felon. Szegedi acknowledges that the meeting took place but contends the tape was altered in unspecified ways; Jobbik considers it real.

In the recording, the felon is heard confronting Szegedi with evidence of his Jewish roots. Szegedi sounds surprised, then offers money and favors in exchange for keeping quiet. Under pressure, Szegedi resigned last month from all party positions and gave up his Jobbik membership. That wasn't good enough for the party: Last week it asked him to give up his seat in the European Parliament as well. Jobbik says its issue is the suspected bribery, not his Jewish roots.

Szegedi came to prominence in 2007 as a founding member of the Hungarian Guard, a group whose black uniforms and striped flags recalled the Arrow Cross, a pro-Nazi party which briefly governed Hungary at the end of World War II and killed thousands of Jews. In all, 550,000 Hungarian Jews were killed during the Holocaust, most of them after being sent in trains to death camps like Auschwitz. The Hungarian Guard was banned by the courts in 2009.

By then, Szegedi had already joined the Jobbik Party, which was launched in 2003 to become the country's biggest far-right political force. He soon became one of its most vocal and visible members, and a pillar of the party leadership. Since 2009, he has served in the European Parliament in Brussels as one of the party's three EU lawmakers, a position he says he wants to keep.

The fallout of Szegedi's ancestry saga has extended to his business interests. Jobbik executive director Gabor Szabo is pulling out of an Internet site selling nationalist Hungarian merchandise that he owns with Szegedi. Szabo said his sister has resigned as Szegedi's personal assistant.

In the 2010 tape, former convict Zoltan Ambrus is heard telling Szegedi that he has documents proving Szegedi is Jewish. The right-wing politician seems genuinely surprised by the news — and offers EU funds and a possible EU job to Ambrus to hush it up.

Ambrus, who served time in prison on a weapons and explosives conviction, apparently rejected the bribes. He said he secretly taped the conversation as part of an internal Jobbik power struggle aimed at ousting Szegedi from a local party leadership post. The party's reaction was swift.

"We have no alternative but to ask him to return his EU mandate," said Jobbik president Gabor Vona. "Jobbik does not investigate the heritage of its members or leadership, but instead takes into consideration what they have done for the nation."

Szegedi's experience is not unique: The Holocaust was a taboo subject during Hungary's decades of communist rule that ended in 1990, and many survivors chose to keep their ordeals to themselves. Russian far-right firebrand Vladimir Zhirinovsky was anti-Semitic until he acknowledged in 2001 that his father was Jewish.

Szegedi, who was raised Presbyterian, acknowledged his Jewish origins in June interviews with Hungarian media, including news broadcaster Hir TV and Barikad, Jobbik's weekly magazine. He said that after the meeting with Ambrus, he had a long conversation with his grandmother, who spoke about her family's past as Orthodox Jews.

"It was then that it dawned on me that my grandmother really is Jewish," Szegedi told Hir TV. "I asked her how the deportations happened. She was in Auschwitz and Dachau and she was the only survivor in the extended family."

Judaism is traced from mother to child, meaning that under Jewish law Szegedi is Jewish. Szegedi said he defines himself as someone with "ancestry of Jewish origin — because I declare myself 100 percent Hungarian."

In the interview with Hir TV, Szegedi denied ever having made anti-Semitic statements, but several of his speeches and media appearances show otherwise. In a November 2010 interview on Hungarian state television, Szegedi blamed the large-scale privatization of state assets after the end of communism on "people in the Hungarian political elite who shielded themselves in their Jewishness."

Speaking on a morning program in late 2010, he said that "the problem the radical right has with the Jews" was that Jewish artists, actors and intellectuals had desecrated Hungary's national symbols like the Holy Crown of St. Stephen, the country's first Christian king.

Szegedi also complained of "massive real estate purchases being done in Hungary, where — it's no secret — they want to bring in Israeli residents." Szegedi met in early August with Rabbi Slomo Koves, of Hungary's Orthodox Chabad-Lubavitch community, whose own parents were in their teens when they discovered they were Jewish.

"As a rabbi ... it is my duty to receive every person who is in a situation of crisis and especially a Jew who has just now faced his heritage," Koves said. During the meeting, Szegedi apologized for any statements which may have offended the Jewish community, and vowed to visit Auschwitz to pay his respects.

Koves described the conversation as "difficult and spiritually stressful," but said he is hopeful for a successful outcome. "Csanad Szegedi is in the middle of a difficult process of reparation, self-knowledge, re-evaluation and learning, which according to our hopes and interests, should conclude in a positive manner," Koves said. "Whether this will occur or not is first and foremost up to him."

Thumbs up Jobbik demands list of Jewish MPs, officials

Quote:
A leading member of Jobbik has expressed regret in the wake of a statement he made Monday saying that a list should be complied of Jews in government and parliament.

Márton Gyöngyösi, the deputy group leader of the radical-nationalist party, said before regular business in Parliament on Monday that government officials and parliamentarians of Jewish origin had unduly influenced Hungary’s policy towards the current situation in Israel and the Gaza Strip.

Hungary: Far-right leader demands lists of Jews

Far-right politician urges government to draw up lists of Jews who pose 'national security risk', stirring outrage among Jewish leaders

A Hungarian far-right politician urged the government to draw up lists of Jews who pose a "national security risk", stirring outrage among Jewish leaders who saw echoes of fascist policies that led to the Holocaust.

Marton Gyongyosi, leader of Hungary's third-strongest political party Jobbik, said the list was necessary because of heightened tensions following the brief conflict in Gaza and should include members of parliament.

Opponents have condemned frequent anti-Semitic slurs and tough rhetoric against the Roma minority by Gyongyosi's party as populist point scoring ahead of elections in 2014.

But Jobbik has never called publicly for lists of Jews.

"I am a Holocaust survivor," said Gusztav Zoltai, executive director of the Hungarian Jewish Congregations' Association. "For people like me this generates raw fear, even though it is clear that this only serves political ends. This is the shame of Europe, the shame of the world."

Between 500,000 and 600,000 Hungarian Jews died in the Holocaust, according to the Holocaust Memorial Centre in Budapest. According to some accounts, one in three Jews killed in Auschwitz were Hungarian nationals.

Gyongyosi's call came after Foreign Ministry State Secretary Zsolt Nemeth said Budapest favoured a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as benefiting both Israelis with Hungarian ancestry, Hungarian Jews and Palestinians in Hungary.

Gyongyosi told Parliament: "I know how many people with Hungarian ancestry live in Israel, and how many Israeli Jews live in Hungary," according to a video posted on Jobbik's website late on Monday.

"I think such a conflict makes it timely to tally up people of Jewish ancestry who live here, especially in the Hungarian Parliament and the Hungarian government, who, indeed, pose a national security risk to Hungary."

Apology

The government released a terse condemnation of the remarks.

"The government strictly rejects extremist, racist, anti-Semitic voices of any kind and does everything to suppress such voices," the government spokesman's office said.

Gyongyosi sought to play down his comments on Tuesday, saying he was referring to citizens with dual Israeli-Hungarian citizenship.

"I apologize to my Jewish compatriots for my declarations that could be misunderstood," he said on Jobbik's website.

Jobbik's anti-Semitic discourse often evokes a centuries-old blood libel - the accusation that Jews used Christians' blood in religious rituals.

"Jobbik has moved from representing medieval superstition (of the blood libel) to openly Nazi ideologies," wrote Slomo Koves, chief rabbi of the Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation.

Jobbik registered as a political party in 2003, and gained increasing influence as it radicalized gradually, vilifying Jews and the country's 700,000 Roma.

The group gained notoriety after founding the Hungarian Guard, an unarmed vigilante group reminiscent of World War Two-era far-right groups. It entered Parliament at the 2010 elections and holds 44 of 386 seats.

Hungary has been among European states worst hit by the recent economic crisis and the center-right government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban has struggled to exit recession.

Default Hungary Criminalizes Holocaust Denial, Orders Man To Visit Memorial

Hungarian Holocaust Denier Sentenced To Visit Memorial And Journal About Experience

Quote:
A Holocaust denier has been ordered to serve an unconventional punishment in Hungary.
Gyorgy Nagy, 42, is the first Hungarian to be convicted of the offense of being a Holocaust denier, reports Hungarian site MTI.
On Thursday, the Budapest Court upheld the ruling of a lower court, according to MTI. The Court sentenced Nagy to 18 months in prison, suspended for three years, and probation. He also has to visit either Budapest's memorial museum, Auschwitz or Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, reports the the AFP. If he chooses his local Holocaust Memorial Centre, he must make three visits in total and record his observations, according to the AFP.
Nagy was arrested in 2011 at a rally in the capital city. The unemployed computer technician was holding up a banner reading: "The Shoah [Holocaust] did not happen," according to SkyNews.
The Hungarian parliament made Holocaust denial a punishable offense in February 2010, according to The Independent. The bill was submitted by Attila Mesterhazy, a prominent member of the governing Socialist Party.
Language in the bill made "denying, questioning or making light of the Holocaust" illegal, according to The Independent.
Israel National News notes that anti-Semitism in Hungary has been recently complicated by the actions of incoming right-wing government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban's Fidesz. The site claims that Fidesz has been accused of "pandering to nationalists" and "stoking anti-Semitism."

Apparently, some in the international community have also noticed a political shift.
In June, Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel returned his Hungarian Order of Merit, Grand Cross, according to the Daily News. The Nobel peace laureate said he could not keep the honor, awarded in 2004, because of Hungary's recent attempt to "whitewash" its collaboration with the Nazis

Jews and Communism in post-war Hungary.

Vindicating a David Irving thesis in "Uprising!"

YOUR fine history of 1956 Hungarian revolution, Uprising!, was viciously attacked from certain quarters when it was first published. I would like to bring to your attention the findings of two renowned Jewish-American sociologists that actually vindicate the book's thesis.

On page 89 of Stanley Rothman's and S. Robert Lichter's Roots of Radicalism: Jews, Christians, and the New Left, originally published in 1982 by Oxford University Press, we read:

"[T]he leading cadres of Communist party in the postwar period [of Hungary] were Jews, who completely dominated the regime until 1952-53. Then a series of purges, stemming in part from Stalin's anti-Semitism, eliminated many of them. Jews were also active in other parties, including the Social Democrats, before such parties were crushed by the Communist regime. Their role was most significant, however, within the Communist party. The top membership of the new Communist regime, including the secret police, during its first years was almost entirely Jewish. The wags of Budapest explained the presence of a lone gentile in the party leadership on the grounds that a 'goy' was needed to turn on the lights on Saturday [sic]."

Photo right shows: Image of Matyas Rakosi, Hungary's Jewish dictator, being burnt by angry insurgents in1956

Rothman and Lichter continue: "Once again, these were largely deracinated Jews who had little or no sense of their Jewish background and little or no sympathy for their Jewish compatriots. Indeed, the remnants of the Hungarian Jewish middle class suffered considerably during their reign, as did Jews in other political parties. Most of the Jews in the party leadership were Stalinists by temperament as well as conviction. As Richard Burks notes, '...they did not let mercy or other humanitarian considerations stand in their way when it came to dealing with the class enemy.' Their rule was Draconian, dominated by terror and characterized by the extensive use of the secret police."

The authors then conclude with these comments: "Jews were on both sides of the 1956 Hungarian revolution. Many old-line Stalinists feared the possibility of retribution should a noncommunist or more liberal regime come to power. On the other hand, many Jewish writers and intellectuals were in the forefront of the reform movement."

Default "Hungarian" Jews flee to Austria

Austria’s Jewish community numbers approximately 8,000 people and is being joined in recent years by some 150 families annually fleeing from Hungary.

Hungary, which has a Jewish population of approximately 90,000, has been experiencing a wave of anti-Semitism after the ultra-nationalist party Jobbik picked up 47 seats in parliamentary elections in 2010.

The party provoked outrage when it recently called for a list of the country’s Jews to be drawn up as a matter of national security.

The party has also labelled Israel a "Nazi state" and accused Jews of controlling Hungary’s media and being responsible for the central European country’s economic woes.

Default EU worried by Hungary's changes to constitution

Parliament, dominated by Prime Minister Viktor Orban's party, voted for a set of government-backed constitutional amendments, despite warnings from the EU, the U.S. government and human rights groups that the changes could undermine Hungary's democracy.

Earlier this month the government sold $3.25 billion (2.1 billion pounds) worth of bonds, removing any need to call on Brussels or the International Monetary Fund for financial help in the near term.

International businesses angry that Orban's government has made foreign electricity firms cut charges to Hungarian households.

Restrictions on political advertisements in the publicly run media during election campaigns

A rule that university students can only get state grants if they pledge to work in Hungary after graduation

Fines or prison terms for homeless people (roma) who sleep on the streets.

Default Threats to the "democratic fabric"

The EU needs to find a way to bring pressure to bear on Hungary, possibly by working with the International Monetary Fund to withhold financial assistance, and make it shift course.

Otherwise, analysts say, it will find itself with a growing problem of trying to enforce democracy in some of the central and Eastern European countries that the EU was so keen to draw into the heart of Europe after the fall of communism.

"What all this has shown is that the assumption that once you become a member you are fully democratized and there's no going back has been completely questioned," said Stratulat of the European Policy Centre.

"Democracy and democratization are forever a work in progress."

...
The small press items (*though this was the bread article from which they slize) from Reuters and the Associated press are really fascinating yet disturbing to read once you realize just how distorted they are. "Orwellian newspeak" gets overused at times and can get a bit tedious, but on occasions like this there is simply no better way to describe it.

Default Israel asks Hungary to withdraw journalism award

Israel's ambassador says Hungary should withdraw a state journalism award given last week to a TV presenter whose station was fined in 2011 for his racist remarks against Gypsies and Jews.

Ambassador Ilan Mor said Monday in a statement that the distinction given to Ferenc Szaniszlo was given "to the wrong person for the very wrong reasons."
Among other comments, Szaniszlo, a newspaper correspondent in Moscow in the 1980s, said Gypsies — or Roma — were monkeys and implied Jews and Roma were carrying out anti-Hungarian activities.

Minister of Human Resources Zoltan Balog said he was unaware of Szaniszlo's remarks and regretted giving him the Mihaly Tancsis award, but said he did not have the power to take it back.

Hervé Ryssen: A judaizmus pszichopatológiája

A judaizmus nem pusztán "vallás", mert sok zsidó ateista vagy agnosztikus, és emiatt egyáltalán nem tartják magukat kevésbé zsidóknak. A zsidóság nem is faj, noha a gyakorlott szem legtöbbször észre tudja venni a zsidós megjelenést, azaz azokat a jellemzőket, melyek sok századnyi beltenyészetből jöttek létre.

Default Anti-Zionist/Bolchevism protest ahead of Jewish meeting

The event, aimed at "paying tribute to the victims of Zionism and Bolchevism", comes amid a recent rise in anti-Semitic incidents in Hungary, which encouraged the World Jewish Congress to take the unusual step of holding its meeting in Budapest. (a clear act of provocation, in that case)

Jobbik leader Gabor Vona told protesters that money paid as compensation to Holocaust survivors could have been better used, ATV television reported.

Vona also said Jews should ask for forgiveness for the crimes committed under the Communist regime by leaders like Bela Kun or Matyas Rakosi, who were Jewish.

Jobbik rally against World Jewish Congress in Budapest

Hungary's far-right Jobbik party has staged a rally in central Budapest in protest at the capital's hosting of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) on Sunday.

Several hundred supporters took part, despite attempts by the government to prevent it going ahead.

Jobbik said the rally was a protest against what it said was a Jewish attempt to buy up Hungary.

The party, which says it aims to protect Hungarian values and interests, is the third largest in parliament.

It regularly issues anti-Semitic statements.

The event in Budapest on Saturday was billed as a tribute to what organisers called the victims of Bolshevism and Zionism.

"The Israeli conquerors, these investors, should look for another country in the world for themselves because Hungary is not for sale," party chairman Gabor Vona told the rally, according to Reuters news agency.

Marton Gyongyosi said Hungary had "become subjugated to Zionism, it has become a target of colonisation while we, the indigenous people, can play only the role of extras".

Last year, Mr Gyongyosi had sparked outrage by saying all government officials of Jewish origin should be officially listed, as they might be a "national security risk".

'Worrying sign'
Some of those taking party in the rally were wearing the black uniform of Jobbik's banned paramilitary wing, the Hungary Guard, which has been accused of vigilante action against Roma (Gypsy) communities.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban had ordered police to ban the march, but a Budapest court overruled the ban, saying it had been based on "unfounded presumptions".

Mr Orban instead instructed the interior ministry to use all lawful means to prevent the event, which goes against the constitution".

Security was tight around the rally, with police blocking several streets, but there were no reports of unrest.

The WJC usually hosts its assembly in Jerusalem, but has chosen Hungary this year to highlight what it says is growing anti-Semitism in Europe.

The focus of its summit this year will be on the "alarming rise of neo-Nazi political parties and anti-Semitic incidents in several European countries, including Hungary", it says on its website.

Spokesman Michael Thaidigsmann said the Jobbik rally was a "worrying sign that these people express their anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli ideology in such a public way".
