Thumbs down Mladic Show Trial At Illegitimate NATO Kangaroo Court In The Hague Begins

Vampire Journalism

No sooner had Ratko Mladic's "trial" before the Hague Inquisition opened today, reports began appearing in the press of his "taunting the victims". Supposedly, Mladic motioned towards the "Mothers of Srebrenica" sitting in the observation gallery with a throat-slitting gesture.

The claim accompanied the descriptions of Mladic as the organizer of the "murder of 8,000 unarmed men and boys" in Srebrenica, which was of course the "worst massacre in Europe since World War Two," easily inducing the casual observer to instantly dislike Mladic.

The problems with this "trial" are many, from the ICTY lacking legitimacy to try anyone, the fact that it writes its own posto facto laws and rules, has standards of evidence that would be laughed out of any legitimate courtroom, to the consideration that the people brought before it have already been lynched in the court of public opinion, and therefore cannot have a fair trial even if the Tribunal itself weren't a travesty.

But the story of the taunting throat-slitting gesture is a prime example of journalistic misconduct when it comes to the Balkans, a case of not just gilding the lily, but of actually reversing the facts of the case.

You see, the throat-slitting gesture was first mentioned in June last year, when it supposedly took place at Mladic's "status conference" hearing. News agencies and papers relying on their feeds reported that the general had taunted his (alleged) victims with a throat-slitting gesture. However, some careful research by an observant reader quickly produced the actual story:

Kada Hotic, who has relatives who were killed at Srebrenica, said Mladic taunted her when she threatened him.
“I told him he will pay the price for murdering my son,” she said, adding that she drew her finger across her throat. Mladic could not hear her, but she said he gestured back, holding his thumb and forefinger close together to indicate she was insignificant.
(emphasis added)

So, the gesture did happen. But it wasn't Mladic who made it, but a Muslim observer! She admitted to it, proudly - and the only interpretation of Mladic's finger gesture is hers, too. Now, it is obvious why the AP would mis-report that Mladic had made the motion - it makes the designated villain look properly villainous, and fits the propaganda narrative. But how dare they, when it was so obviously not true? Did they think they wouldn't get caught?

Apparently so. Until someone did catch them, and informed blogger Julia Gorin. She then sent letters to the offending agencies and newspapers, pointing out the problem. Finally, on September 30, 2011, the Toronto Star - one of the papers that ran AP's story on July 4, issued the following correction:

"Online News Correction for September 30
Published On Fri Sep 30 2011
A July 4 article about the war crimes tribunal of Gen. Ratko Mladic incorrectly stated that Mladic drew his finger across his throat while looking at the public gallery. In fact, a person in the gallery made the threatening gesture to Mladic
." (emphasis added)

The Star's correction prompted a chain reaction of retractions by other papers, and the AP itself. Gorin's blog entry provides a complete list and many details of the case.

Of course, the retraction got very little attention, while the lie of Mladic threatening the women in the gallery got spotlight treatment. And now the story has been raised from the dead, reported in the exact same words - again, with no visual evidence to back it up, no indication that it refers to an event from last year, or that it was originally mis-reported in a manner that merited an official retraction!

There you have it, folks: vampire journalism, courtesy of your mainstream media. Ready the garlic and the stakes.

Error and delay in Mladic trial new blow to world court's credibility

By: Mike Corder

THE HAGUE, Netherlands -- An apparent clerical error prompted judges to postpone the long-awaited war crimes trial of former Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic on Thursday, possibly for months.

The delay cast a shadow over one of the court's biggest cases -- and over the reputation of the court itself, where most prominent trials have proceeded at a snail's pace, frustrating many victims.

It also highlighted problems international tribunals face in prosecuting sweeping indictments covering allegations of atrocities spanning years in countries far from the courts where defendants face justice.

"It is fraught with delay because of the volume of documentation and scope of alleged crimes," Richard Dicker, the director of Human Rights Watch's international justice program, said Thursday. "Add to that the need to translate and it really takes it to a whole new level of complexity that you don't see in domestic trials."

Presiding judge Alphons Orie said he was delaying the Yugoslav war-crimes tribunal case due to "significant disclosure errors" by prosecutors, who are obliged to share all evidence with Mladic's lawyers.

Orie said judges will analyze the "scope and full impact" of the problem and aim to set a new starting date as soon as possible. The presentation of evidence was set to begin later this month.

Prosecutors had already acknowledged the errors and did not object to the delay. Mladic's attorney has asked for six months to study the materials.

Hague: Mladić taken to hospital, trial adjourned

Source: B92, Beta, Tanjug

THE HAGUE -- The trial of former Republic of Srpska (RS) Army Commander Ratko Mladić was adjourned on Thursday after the defendant got sick.

The defense requested a recess during Civil Affairs Officer and Political Advisor to UNPROFOR David Harland's testimony and Mladić became sick afterward.

"Mladić was feeling unwell and he was taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure," said Hague Tribunal Spokeswoman Nerma Jelačić, AFP has reported.

According to her, judge Alphons Orie scheduled the next hearing for Friday when Harland should continue his testimony.

However, it is uncertain whether the trial will continue tomorrow.

“The court is still unable to determine when Mladić will be able to attend the trial,” explained Orie.

Mladić has been having health problems since he was arrested in May 2011 but his condition has significantly improved since he has been in the Hague Tribunal. He suffered three strokes before the arrest.

Harland said that former RS President Radovan Karadžić in fact had no operational command of the RS Army because subordinate officers in the field had been reporting to Mladić, adding that Karadžić and the defendant did not agree on the issue.

Mladić is charged with genocide, crimes against humanity and violation of the law and customs of war.

Mladić’s trial continues in Hague Tribunal

Source: Beta

THE HAGUE -- The trial of former Republic of Srpska (RS) Army Commander General Ratko Mladić continued in the Hague Tribunal on Tuesday after a month-long summer break.

Former Sky News reporter Aernout van Lynden testified today. According to reports, Mladić “looks good after experiencing health problems earlier this summer”.

Prosecutors continued to present evidence against the defendant and van Lynden, who interviewed both Mladić and ex-RS President Radovan Karadžić, said that the RS Army was “spreading psychological terror” in Sarajevo.

He said that “everybody was under incredible stress during the siege of Sarajevo, especially mothers with children”. Another lie repeated millions of times making it almost impossible to refute. There was no 'siege' of Sarajevo. Sarajevo was a divided city with Serbs trying to hold their suburbs, while muslims were always attempting to break into them and capture them because they wanted to control ALL of Sarajevo for themselves. Serbs didn't want muslim parts of the city they just wanted to defend their areas and suburbs. they even handed over the main sarajevo airport to the UN in 1992 giving the muslims a lifeline for weapons imports for their army. Of course now there are basically no more Serbs left in the city as the whole of it was handed to mulims.

Mladić and Karadžić are among other things accused of terrorizing Sarajevo residents with artillery and sniper attacks from 1992 until 1995. What about Serbian Sarajevo residents? Oh yeah they didnt exist.

61-year-old Mladić is accused of 11 counts of genocide, crimes against humanity and violation of law and customs of war. Disgraceful inversion of facts and reality

The trial started on May 16 when the prosecution presented its opening statement.

Mladić refused to enter a plea, stating that the charges were “monstrous” and “hideous”. Judge Alphons Orie in accordance with the court rules entered into record that the defendant had pleaded not guilty.

The indictment against Mladić was raised on July 25, 1995 and he was arrested on May 26, 2011 in Serbia. He was extradited to the Hague Tribunal five days later.

Mladić’s defense claims civilians were not targeted

Source: Beta

THE HAGUE -- Ratko Mladić's defense claimed before the Hague Tribunal on Wednesday that the Republic of Srpska (RS) Army did not target civilians in Sarajevo in 1992.

However, former Sky News reporter Aernout van Lynden liar and CIA asset since the days of the Afghan war against the Soviets testified that grenades hit civilian targets.

Mladić's defense counsel Branko Lukić said that Bosnia-Herzegovina Army’s snipers and artillery were at the city hospital, army barracks and several buildings in downtown Sarajevo. The witness rejected the allegation, saying he did not notice anything. He also denied that the Bosnia-Herzegovina Territorial Defense Headquarters was located in one of the downtown buildings. Massive lies which UNPROFOR's own reports debunked so many times

The defense stressed that “there were many armed civilians in the city” and van Lynden confirmed that he had seen armed civilians in Sarajevo.

Lukić noted that the Sarajevo authorities did not allow “thousands of Serbs” but also Muslims and Croats to leave the city that was because they needed them in the city for propaganda purposes, to show the world their tragic plight which was of course blamed on the Serbs. Serbs wanted to open corridors to let all who wish to leave the city but muslim govt wouldn't allow it. and the witness said that “it was hard to cross the front line, just like in any war” but that he had seen civilians who had managed to do so in the spring and summer of 1992.

When asked if he knew that mujahidin were fighting on the Muslim side during the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, van Lynden said he had heard of it but that he had not seen any mujahidin. this guy lies like he breathes air However, he pointed out that he had seen a Japanese in one of the Serb units who had introduced himself as a “Japanese chetnik”. Unbelievable, the documented mountains of evidence showing thousands upon thousands of these mujahadeen in Bosnia, fighting raping and killing Serbs, but also Croats, and this liar claims to have seen a Japanese chetnik.

The trial will be continued tomorrow and former head of the European Community's monitoring mission Colm Doyle is expected to testify.

Default From the Tolimir 'trial'

Srebrenica attack aimed at 'terrorists': Mladic commander

22/08/2012

Bosnian Serb ex-general Zdravko Tolimir told the Yugoslav war crimes court Wednesday the attack on the Srebrenica enclave in 1995 was aimed at "fighting against armed terrorist groups."

Speaking during closing arguments in his genocide trial, Tolimir -- who once reported directly to Bosnian Serb army chief Ratko Mladic -- added there was no evidence to prove he was involved in attacks against civilians.

"The attack against the enclave was aimed at its demilitarisation and fighting against armed terrorist groups," Tolimir told the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague.

"The prosecution does not have a single piece of evidence to prove that Tolimir's involvement was against the civilian population," said Tolimir, referring to himself in the third person.

He did not "issue orders in the course of combat, nor was he present in Srebrenica," Tolimir added.

Prosecutors on Tuesday asked the court to give Tolimir a life sentence for his role in the July 1995 massacre in eastern Bosnia, where almost 8,000 Muslim men and boys were slaughtered after the "safe" enclave was overrun by the Bosnian Serb army under Mladic. It has been deemed the worst atrocity on European soil since World War II.

Now 63, Tolimir is accused of committing genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Balkan country's bloody 1992-95 war that claimed 100,000 lives and left 2.2 million others homeless.

He faces eight counts including murder and forcible deportation relating to the attack on Srebrenica.

Prosecutors said the former intelligence chief was part of a grand scheme to murder thousands of Muslim men and boys and expel thousands of women and children at the enclave in order to create a "mono-ethnic Serb state."

Arrested in May 2007 in Bosnia-Hercegovina, he has pleaded not guilty and conducts his own defence.

Mladic, also dubbed "the Butcher of Bosnia," was arrested in Serbia last year, and now faces 11 counts before the same Hague-based court, including for the Srebrenica massacre.
