Bella Hadid claims support for Palestine cost her ‘many’ jobs

The supermodel said she will continue to stand for the Palestinian cause as she’s not “on this earth to be a model”

American supermodel of Palestinian descent, Bella Hadid, has revealed that her continued support for the Palestinian cause has cost her “many” jobs. Companies stopped working with her over the issue, Hadid told Libyan-American journalist, Noor Tagouri, for her Rep podcast earlier this week.

“I really do believe that if I started speaking about Palestine, when I was 20, I wouldn't have gotten the recognition and the respect that I have now,” Hadid, who is now 25, said. Together with her sister Gigi, also a supermodel, Bella is known as one of the most vocal supporters of Palestine.
(...)
“I’m so lucky and blessed that I’m in a position where I can speak out the way that I do. And really, the downfall is what? That I lose my job?” she said. “I realized that I’m not on this earth to be a model,” Hadid added.
(...)
Several actors, including Mark Ruffalo and Emma Watson, who have spoken out in support of Palestinians, had to later apologize amid accusations of anti-Semitism.

UN, international organizations condemn Israeli raids on Palestinian civil society groups

Friday, 19 August 2022 10:13 AM [ Last Update: Friday, 19 August 2022 10:36 AM ]

International organizations have in unanimous voice denounced the Israeli regime’s military raids on the offices of Palestinian human rights and civil society organizations in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah.

It comes after Israeli forces stormed, searched, and sealed the headquarters of seven human rights organizations in Ramallah and the outskirt town of al-Bireh, marking a major escalation against the advocacy groups.

The organizations raided by the occupation forces include Al-Haq, Addameer, the Bisan Center for Research & Development, Defense for Children International Palestine, the Union of Agricultural Work Committees, the Union of Health Work Committees, and the Union of Palestinian Women.

Shawan Jabarin, director of al-Haq, said he and his staffers were still checking whether any documents were confiscated by the regime forces.

Israeli troops “came, blew up the door, got inside, and messed with the files,” he was quoted as saying by AP, adding that they sealed the entrance to the office after that.

The Union of Agricultural Work Committees circulated a video showing troops in full battle gear searching their office and ransacking equipment.

German Authorities Investigating Criminal Complaint Against PA President Mahmoud Abbas for Denigrating Holocaust

by Ben Cohen

German police have opened an investigation into Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas over remarks he made during a joint press conference with Chancellor Olaf Scholz in which he denigrated the Nazi Holocaust — a crime under German law punishable with a prison sentence of up to five years.

Mike Delberg — a member of the executive committee of the Maccabi organization in Germany and the social media manager for the opposition CDU Party — filed a complaint with the Berlin police following Abbas’s comments at the press conference on Tuesday.

Questioned about an apology for the murder, 50 years ago, of 11 Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics who were taken hostage by terrorists from the radical Palestinian “Black September” organization, the Palestinian leader responded: “From 1947 to the present day, Israel has committed 50 massacres in Palestinian villages and cities, in Deir Yassin, Tantura, Kafr Qasim and many others, 50 massacres, 50 holocausts.”
(...)
A major question centers on whether Abbas, as a foreign leader, can be legitimately prosecuted in Germany. German news outlets reported that the country’s Foreign Ministry was working with the assumption that Abbas enjoys diplomatic immunity.

However, a leading law professor told the Bild news outlet that he was skeptical on this point, and that Abbas had clearly broken German law.

“The comparison is completely misplaced and can therefore be evaluated as a trivialization of the Holocaust,” Prof. Michael Kubiciel of the University of Augsburg said. “The disturbance of the public peace is blatant.”

Shireen Abu Akleh likely killed by IDF gunfire in Jenin, Israel admits

There is a “high probability” that the shot that killed the Palestinian journalist was fired by an Israeli soldier returning fire, the Israeli military found.

An IDF investigation found that an Israeli soldier was likely to have accidentally shot Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh during a gunfight in Jenin in May, and dismissed the need for a criminal probe.

“There is a high possibility that Shireen was accidentally hit by IDF gunfire that was fired toward suspects identified as armed Palestinian gunmen, during an exchange of fire in which life-risking, widespread and indiscriminate shots were fired toward IDF soldiers,” the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said on Monday.

It was the strongest IDF statement to date with respect to its possible culpability in Abu Akleh’s death. However, it came alongside army clarification that no such statement of guilt was possible given the impossibility of determining with certainty who shot the fatal bullet.

Marvel Taking ‘New Approach’ to Israeli Superhero Sabra for ‘Captain America 4,’ Character’s MCU Debut Ignites Concern

By Zack Sharf

Disney and Marvel Studios announced at the D23 Expo that “Unorthodox” Emmy nominee Shira Haas is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the superhero Sabra in the upcoming fourth “Captain America” movie, officially titled “Captain America: New World Order.” In the comics, Sabra is a mutant who serves as a Mossad agent. The character’s inclusion in the comics has long generated controversy, but Marvel confirmed to Variety that it’s taking a “new approach” with Sabra for the big screen.

Sabra first appeared in the comics in the early 1980s courtesy of “The Incredible Hulk.” Her presence became a point of contention as it brought Marvel comics firmly into the Israeli-Palestine conflict. In a 1981 Hulk comic, for instance, Sabra shows little remorse over the death of a Palestinian boy until the Hulk teaches her about human values (via The New York Times).

CNN notes that Sabra often battled offensive Arab stereotypes in the comics, escalating concerns from Palestinians over the character joining the MCU on screen. The Institute for Middle East Understanding, a U.S.-based pro-Palestinian organization, criticized the character of Sabra for “glorifying the Israeli army and police.”

One Israeli killed, dozens injured in twin bombings in Jerusalem, hours after Israeli forces kill Palestinian teen in Nablus

One Israeli was killed and several others were injured in two separate bombings that targeted bus stops in West Jerusalem Wednesday morning, while in Nablus and Jenin tensions soar amid continued Israeli military incursions.

At around 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning, reports emerged that an explosion had occurred near a bus stop in West Jerusalem along a busy highway. Initial reports show that at least 12 were injured in the blast, including at least four who were in serious condition, according to Israel’s emergency services.

Around half an hour later, a second blast occurred at another bust stop outside the Ramon settlement in northern Jerusalem, injuring a handful more. Israeli media reported that the second blast was “controlled,” and that the injuries sustained were light, with people treated for shrapnel-related injuries and “anxiety.”

Later Wednesday morning Israeli media reported that at least 23 people had been treated for injuries from the blasts, while officials confirmed the death of 16-year-old Aryeh Schupak, who was injured in the first explosion.

Israeli police said they believed the bombs were remotely detonated, caused by nails and explosives packed into bags that were left behind the bus stops. According to initial reports by the Israeli state broadcasting network, KAN, the first bombing was conducted when a bomb was planted at the station. The second bombing was a result of an explosive planted on a motorcycle, which was later detonated.

As of Wednesday afternoon no one had yet claimed responsibility for the bombings, though Israeli security officials stated that an organized Palestinian group was behind the attack.

Meanwhile, rightwing Israeli MK Itamar Ben-Gvir, who is likely to be Israel’s next internal security minister in the new government under Benjamin Netanyahu, visited the scene of the first bombing, and called on the Israeli military apparatus to “lay siege” to Palestinians in order to “restore our deterrence power.”

A recent report has revealed that suicide cases among Israeli army personnel continue to increase at an alarming rate, with the latest figures causing serious concerns among the occupying regime’s top-ranking military and intelligence figures as they have established a new record.

According to a report published by the Israeli daily newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, fourteen Israeli soldiers have taken their lives since the beginning of the current year, and the number marks a dramatic rise within the last five years.

The Israeli military recorded a total of 11 suicides for the whole of last year and nine cases in 2020.

Several Palestinian children have suffered suffocation from teargas canisters fired by Israeli soldiers in the city of al-Khalil, as Israeli occupation forces continue systematic aggression against Palestinians.

The Israeli soldiers fired teargas canisters at students as they were leaving their schools in the southern parts of al-Khalil on Tuesday. A few students who suffered suffocation were treated on the spot.

According to the Palestinian Quds news network, the children panicked as gas filled the air and did not know where to go to avoid breathing in the toxic gases, while local residents tried helping them run away to a safe place.

Israeli forces kill Palestinian teenager in Bethlehem

Adam Ayyad, 15, was killed during an Israeli army raid on the Dheisheh refugee camp in Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank.

By Al Jazeera Staff
Published On 3 Jan 2023

Ramallah, occupied West Bank – The Israeli army has shot and killed a Palestinian teenager during a raid on the city of Bethlehem in the southern occupied West Bank.

Adam Issam Shaker Ayyad, 15, was killed after he was shot in the chest on Tuesday morning, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.

The killing took place during an Israeli army raid on the Dheisheh refugee camp that began before dawn and included dozens of armoured vehicles, after which confrontations with young Palestinians broke out. According to local media, Israeli forces arrested several residents during the raid.

The Palestinian foreign ministry described the killing as a “heinous crime of execution” in a statement, and said “Israel’s continued impunity encourages it to commit crimes against our children”.

“It is an extension of the series of extrajudicial killings and a part of Israel’s targeting of Palestinian children in general,” the statement continued.
(...)
Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said in a statement on Tuesday that the Israeli government bore “full responsibility for all the consequences of its aggression against our cities, towns, villages, and camps, and the accompanying killings, demolitions, and arrests” including that of Ayyad.
(...)
Israeli forces killed at least 171 Palestinians in the West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem in 2022, including more than 30 children. At least 9,000 others have been injured.

Civilians confronting the Israeli army during raids and uninvolved bystanders have been killed, as well as Palestinian fighters in targeted assassinations and during armed clashes.

Israel orders police to remove Palestine flags from public spaces

Far-right security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said waving the Palestinian flag is an act in support of ‘terrorism’.

Published On 9 Jan 2023

Israel’s new far-right Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir has instructed police to remove Palestinian flags from public spaces, calling the Palestinian national symbol an act of “terrorism”.

Israeli law does not outlaw Palestinian flags but police and soldiers have the right to remove them in cases where they deem there is a threat to public order.

Sunday’s directive from Ben-Gvir, who heads the ultranationalist Jewish Power party in Benjamin Netanyahu’s new far-right government and as national security minister oversees the police, appears to signal a hardline and uncompromising attitude towards Palestinian expressions of identity and free speech and pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

The display of the Palestinian flag in Israel has, in practice, long been clamped down on by Israeli authorities, with Palestinians regarding such moves as an attempt to suppress Palestinian identity.

Israeli sanctions will lead to Palestinian Authority’s collapse, warns PM Shtayyeh

In a rare interview with a Hebrew outlet, politician defends Ramallah’s successful UN initiative, saying Palestinians ‘have a right to complain,’ urges international assistance

Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh has warned that a series of sanctions approved last week by the security cabinet against Ramallah will usher in the PA’s collapse.

In a rare interview with the Israeli daily Haaretz, published Monday, Shtayyeh defended Ramallah’s move at the United Nations to have the International Court of Justice draft a legal opinion regarding Israel’s conduct in the West Bank and Gaza — a step Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to as “an extreme anti-Israel” measure.

The Palestinians “have a right to complain to the world about the occupation,” he told Haaretz. He further accused Israel of “profiting from the occupation.”

‘This is Not Normal’: Antisemitism in Palestinian School Curriculum Persists as Problem Despite Global Outrage, Experts Say

by Dion J. Pierre

Study cards for eleventh graders accusing Jews of being “in control of global events through financial power,” seventh graders instructed to describe Israeli soldiers as “Satan’s aides” in a textbook chapter imploring Muslims to “liberate” the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and children gathered to listen to a poem with the following line: “Give me a Kalashnikov, an [M-] 14, an axe and a knife.”

These are some of the examples of the virulent antisemitism experts say continues to show up in educational materials provided to children living in territory controlled by the Palestinian Authority. The problem has persisted despite years of outrage and international pressure and contributes to prolonging the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, experts and lawmakers told The Algemeiner.

“For the Palestinian Authority, the strategy is to use the unique authoritative nature of textbooks to create a society, which is essentially violent,” Marcus Sheff, the CEO of Impact-se, an Israeli education watchdog, told The Algemeiner. “If you look across the Palestinian textbooks from cover to cover, as we have from line to line, there is no Israel. There is a yearning for places located inside of Israel, and there is, if you like, an enthusiasm for violence conveyed in their lauding those who have been violent in the past and in their justifying violence today.”

Educational materials produced by the Palestinian Authority, similar to that issued by Hamas in Gaza, are some of the most antisemitic in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region and reflects Palestinian societies’ larger hopes for a world without a Jewish State, Sheff added.

Pressure Grows in Frankfurt for Cancellation of Roger Waters Concert Over Rock Singer’s ‘Antisemitism’

by Algemeiner Staff

Pressure is growing for the cancellation of a forthcoming concert in the German city of Frankfurt by former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters because of the repeated accusations of antisemitism against the rock musician.

Waters will be touring his “This is Not A Drill 2023” show in several major German cities throughout May, with the Frankfurt concert scheduled for May 28 at the city’s Festhalle arena.

A vocal supporter of the so-called “Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions” (BDS) movement targeting the State of Israel for a comprehensive boycott, Waters’ past tours have featured provocative symbols that included flying pigs branded with a Star of David. In recent years, the singer has flirted with more overt antisemitism, drawing widespread condemnation in 2020 when he described the late pro-Israel billionaire philanthropist Sheldon Adelson as a “puppet master” controlling the US government who believed that “only Jews…are completely human.” Responding to Waters’ attack on Adelson, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) accused him of “deranged antisemitism.”

Israeli forces kill two Palestinians, including minor, in occupied West Bank

Wednesday, 25 January 2023 1:21 PM [ Last Update: Wednesday, 25 January 2023 3:33 PM ]

Palestinians, 16-year-old Salah Muhammad Ali (L) and 22-year-old Aref Abdel Nasser Lahlouh, were killed by the Israeli regime forces in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday.

Israeli regime forces shot and killed two young Palestinians in separate incidents in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, paving the ground for further escalation in the occupied territories.

The trigger-happy regime forces killed a Palestinian teenager during a military raid on the Shuafat refugee camp in East al-Quds on Wednesday evening, according to local media reports, citing officials.

Palestinian Health Ministry said Salah Muhammad Ali, 16, was shot in the chest and eventually succumbed to his wounds at a local hospital.

The Palestinian teenager was pronounced dead hours after the Israeli military forces raided the camp to raze down the family house of 22-year-old martyr Uday Tamimi, who was killed on October 19 last year after being accused of shooting at a checkpoint in which one Israeli soldier was killed.

The Israeli military raid on the Shuafat refugee camp on Wednesday sparked confrontations with unarmed local youth and armed clashes with Palestinian fighters, according to reports.
(...)

The latest killings bring the total number of Palestinians killed in Israeli fire so far in 2023 to 20, including five children.

Israeli forces regularly conduct raids on various cities of the occupied West Bank on the pretext of detaining what it calls “wanted” Palestinians.

The unwarranted raids usually lead to violent confrontations with residents.

Over the past months, Israel has ramped up attacks on Palestinian towns and cities throughout the occupied territories. As a result of these attacks, dozens of Palestinians have lost their lives and many others have been arrested.

The United Nations marked 2022 as the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank in 16 years.

Israeli forces killed at least 171 Palestinians in the West Bank and occupied East al-Quds last year, including more than 30 children. At least 9,000 others were injured as well.

Israeli forces demolish six Palestinian-owned homes

Earlier in the day, Israeli forces demolished six Palestinian-owned homes in the village of al-Diyouk al-Tahta, west of the city of Ariha, on the pretext that they had been constructed in Area C of the West Bank without a permit.

Israel plans to build 18,000 more settlement units in occupied West Bank: Report

Wednesday, 25 January 2023 9:27 AM [ Last Update: Wednesday, 25 January 2023 9:48 AM ]

A view of an illegal Israeli settlement (File photo)

Israeli media sources say the current far-right administration in Tel Aviv is planning to take unprecedented steps to pave the way for further expansion of unlawful settlement construction in the occupied West Bank.

According to Israeli Hayom, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet has begun discussing measures to speed up and increase the construction of settlements in the West Bank, in defiance of international law.

Netanyahu, War Minister Yoav Galant, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich met earlier this week to finalize the process.

During the meeting, some of the components of the plans were revealed, said the Israeli newspaper.

These steps include approving the establishment of some 18,000 new settlement units in the coming months and creating a separate body that would approve the construction of non-residential buildings, such as industrial companies, among other things.

The approval of such steps could result in a massive increase in the population of Israeli settler communities in the occupied West Bank over the coming years, Israel Hayom said.

Israel bombs Gaza following deadly raid

The violent flare-up came after nine Palestinians were killed during a raid on a refugee camp in Jenin

Israel has carried out airstrikes on an alleged “military site” in the Gaza Strip, claiming the mission was a response to rockets fired from the area. Palestinian officials accused Israeli troops of a “massacre” in the occupied West Bank earlier in the day, with militant groups vowing to retaliate.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the strikes early on Friday morning, saying it targeted an “underground” facility used to produce rockets for Hamas, the political party and armed faction that has ruled Gaza since 2007.

“The attack was carried out in response to the launch of rockets earlier tonight from the Gaza Strip into Israel, which were intercepted by air defense fighters,” the military said, adding that the strikes resulted in “significant damage to the strengthening and arming of Hamas.”

At least five rockets were fired toward Israel overnight, according to the IDF, with three intercepted, one landing in an open area and another falling short inside Gaza. The launches prompted air raid sirens in settlements bordering the Palestinian enclave, including the city of Ashkelon just north of Gaza.

The rocket salvo followed an Israeli special forces raid on a refugee camp in the West Bank on Thursday, which ended in a shootout with militants and left nine Palestinians dead, among them a 61-year-old woman, according to the Palestinian Authority. The IDF said the operation targeted an Islamic Jihad terrorist faction active in Jenin and shared footage purporting to show gunmen firing rifles and throwing Molotov cocktails at Israeli troops, claiming the terror cell was a “ticking time bomb.”

Eight killed in Jerusalem terrorist attack

Gunman reportedly opened fire on Jews leaving evening prayers

At least eight people have been killed and ten more wounded in a shooting at a Jerusalem synagogue on Friday evening, Israeli media reported. The attacker was killed by security forces while attempting to escape.

The armed assault took place in the Neve Yaakov neighborhood of Jerusalem, in the territory claimed by the Palestinian Authority. At least five people were confirmed dead at the scene. Five of the wounded were taken to area hospitals in critical condition.

The gunman has not been publicly identified. According to the Times of Israel, he is a “resident of East Jerusalem” who opened fire on the synagogue from a handgun, then fled towards the Palestinian neighborhood of Beit Hanina. He allegedly fired at the officers who responded to the scene and was fatally shot by their return fire.

A day of protest and resistance across Palestine following ‘massacre’ in Jenin

Palestinians responded to Israel's "massacre" in Jenin with protests and resistance across the West Bank, including an attack on an East Jerusalem settlement where at least seven Israelis were killed.

BY MARIAM BARGHOUTI JANUARY 27, 2023

On Thursday, January 26, Israeli forces invaded Jenin refugee camp and killed nine Palestinians in what became called by residents of the camp ‘a massacre.’ Later that day, 22-year-old Yousef Abedalkarim Muhsein became the 10th Palestinian killed when he was shot by Israeli forces in Al-Ram, near Ramallah.

On Friday, Palestinians responded.

Throughout Friday, Palestinians across historic Palestine rose in protests. These confrontations were driven by the massacre in Jenin specifically, and the routine provocations from Israeli settlers, intelligence, and armed forces engaged in the illegal annexation of the little which remains of the West Bank.

The day culminated with five armed shooting operations carried out across the West Bank Friday night, including one in the Israeli settlement of Neve Yaakov in occupied East Jerusalem, which resulted in the death of at least seven Israeli settlers.

Prayer as protest
At dawn hours on Friday, the holiest day of the week for Muslim worshippers, tens of thousands of Palestinians in Jerusalem and hundreds in Hebron performed dawn prayers at Al-Aqsa mosque and the Ibrahimi mosque, respectively.

“There is a danger,” Jalal Abu-Khater, a writer from Jerusalem tells Mondoweiss. “We feel Al-Aqsa is being taken over and this isn’t in our head,” he emphasized. “This is very real, where we’re losing our last place of sovereignty in Jerusalem.”

The act of collective prayer in these specific areas has become a defiant act of resistance amid the continued settler invasions and police violence witnessed in the Al-Aqsa compound in Jerusalem’s Old City and settler-military attacks in Hebron’s Old City where more than 800 settlers live protected by Israeli forces.

In Jerusalem, Palestinians rose in chants in support of Jenin and the resistance from Gaza in light of the continued repression and targeting of Palestinians.

“Being frequently present there in this place allows us to remain attached to it,” Abu Khater explained. “It’s a common place for many people in the world, but it’s a personal space for us in Jerusalem.”

Indeed, on January 3 of this year, the extremist right-wing Minister of Interior, Itamar Ben-Gvir, entered Al-Aqsa compound in a provocation attempt that mirrored the former Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon’s entry to the compound in September of 2000. Sharon’s entry sparked the second Palestinian uprising.

Today, Nafeesa Khuwais, a Palestinian elder known in the Old City as a guardian of Al-Aqsa, was arrested and escorted out by a group of armed border police. In Arabic, the civilians which remain in the Aqsa compound in order to protect it and maintain Palestinian presence in the holy place of worship are known as Murabiteen, which means the guardians who station against aggression.
