Hans Ulrich Rudel's biography Stuka Pilot, is largely free of anti-German, anti-National Socialist propaganda, although I haven't read it in many years. Otto Skorzeny's For Germany might be another, but I've never read it.

A thought there would be more responses than that.

How about this? Which WWII German soldier memoirs should I avoid?

It's not a memoir, but Robert Foley wrote Commando Extraordinary about Otto Skorzeny, and is pretty sympathetic to Skorzeny. There was a German officer (forgot the name) who wrote memoirs of his duty in France, then Russia. very good. And a really good book is SS Panzergrenadier by Hans Schmidt.

The victors of WWII never forgot the ground-breaking memoirs written by a certain WWI German veteran (a notorious Austrian Corporal with a magnetic personality and a vastly-superior intellect) during the interwar era. So they decided not to let that happen again after WWII...

Here under the memoirs of not a German soldier but a Belgian soldier who fought in the Axis armies and was able to tell his wartime experiences after WWII as a refugee in Francisco Franco's Fascist Spain...

World War I:

Storm of Steel by Ernst Juenger. This is widely acknowledged to be the best German account of the War as seen by a combatant on the Western Front.

But having said that, it should be noted that there are some problems with Juenger. Although he defined himself as a nationalist, he rejected National Socialism. He was on the fringes of the Stauffenberg plot against Hitler in July 1944, and he is credited with "saving the lives of many French Jews" (that is, he used his authority as an army officer to prevent them from being sent to detention facilities).

That should not detract from his World War I memoir, however, which is excellent.

World War II:

The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer. World War II equivalent to Storm of Steel. Unlike Juenger, however, Sajer is broadly pro-NS. After the War, he corresponded with Savitri Devi.

The Captive Dreamer by Christian de la Mazière. Account of combat on the Eastern front by a French Waffen-SS volunteer. Excellent! Not really ideological but very anti-communist and pro-NS.

Stuka Pilot by Hans-Ulrich Rudel. (Mentioned above.) Air war in the East as seen by the hardcore National Socialist pilot - the most decorated German soldier of the Second World War.

Panzergrenadier
by Hans Schmidt. (Mentioned above.) A teenage member of the Leibstandarte-SS Adolf Hitler tells of his participation in the Battle of the Bulge and the last months of the War on the Eastern Front.

My Commando Operations by Otto Skorzeny. There are a number of different English translations and editions of Skorzeny's wartime memoirs. The one mentioned above, Commando Extraordinary, is highly edited and abridged. I prefer the complete edition, published by Schiffer Military History (despite many infuriating typos). Skorzeny, like Rudel, was one of the National Socialists who kept the faith in his Fuehrer, Folk and Fatherland after the war, and this hardline NS attitude informs his acount of his operations.

Frontkaempfer by Et Wolsink. Wartime "as-told-to" memoir by a Dutch member of the Waffen-SS. Extremely pro-National Socialist. However, it is not on the same level as The Forgotten Soldier and Captive Dreamer. I get the impression that the author has let his imagination run away with him on occasion, especially concerning his post-War adventures. (But maybe not. Who knows?)

Here's one that I've read:

A German Odyssey: The Journal of a German Prisoner of War
Quote:

Hoerner was a German noncom captured by Americans in France in August 1944. He begins the book with a sketch of his life and his varied battle experience. The bulk of the book is a compilation of his journals as a wounded soldier in France, then in America, for two years. The book ends with a sketch of his time as a prisoner in England for 18 months and a joyful return to his family. Hoerner relates how he survived with the help of comrades, came to realize the horrors of the Nazis, and began to appreciate America. A bit marred by translation errors, this book is nevertheless unique and belongs in libraries with interest in World War II.
In the end he would believe that lies about the Third Reich; nonetheless, this is an interesting story about a German prisoner of war.

It sounds like he fits into the "pathetic self hating guilt racked" category I mentioned in my first post.
