Irvin High School teacher slain in Juárez

EL PASO -- An El Paso high-school teacher described as witty, well-liked and respected became one of the latest victims of the continuing violence in Juárez.
James Patrick Barnes, 56, was shot and killed about 6:30 a.m. Friday in a poor neighborhood in the western part of the city, Chihuahua state police said.
Police found Barnes lying in the street faceup next to his 2010 Toyota Camry. He was shot once in the back, officials said. Police did not say whether anything was stolen.

In the U.S., his 19-year-old daughter, Brianna Barnes, received a call from the U.S. Consulate about 8 a.m. to let her know that her father had been killed.
Friday morning, three of Barnes' five daughters were in shock, almost unable to grasp what happened a few hours before. "He was a little kid at heart, but he was very smart, witty and professional," Brianna Barnes said. His daughters were upset but looked calm reminiscing about moments with their father.

Brianna Barnes was the last one to see him. They had lunch at the Texas Roadhouse on Thursday. "He got to say 'I love you,' " she said. "That's the good part." Brianna Barnes said all her friends liked her father. She and her father went to local concerts and to the premieres of the "Twilight" saga.
Barnes' daughters said they admired him.

"I used to call him 'Bing' because I used to ask him about any current event, and he would know everything," Brianna Barnes said. Bing is a web search engine.
It is unclear to his family what he was doing so early in that neighborhood of Juárez. It is a dangerous area, and it sits across from Sunset Heights.
His daughters said they have no relatives there, and he did not tell them he was

"We had family in Juárez, and we would go to a Christmas party and stuff like that, but nobody was there anymore," said Melissa Barnes, another of his daughters. James Barnes was born in February of 1954 in Germany while his father, who was in the military, was stationed abroad. The family moved to El Paso in the 1960s.

The outgoing, red-haired teacher graduated from Burges High School and received bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Texas at El Paso.
Michelle Barnes, 27, said her father taught Spanish at the El Paso Community College for a short time.

He began working at the El Paso Independent School District in 1993, his daughters recalled. He was married to Rosario Barnes but divorced in 2000. Rosario Barnes died of cancer last September. James Barnes was living with his 95-year-old mother in East El Paso.

Barnes taught speech and English at Irvin High School for more than 10 years. He also coached the speech and debate team. The killing of Barnes triggered an emotional reaction from the Irvin High School community.
Albert Nungaray was one of the students who reacted nostalgically.
"Irvin itself is crying," he said.

Nungaray realized that James Barnes was a great teacher, but only after he graduated. Nungaray was not his best student, he said.
"I can only hope that if, and when I become a teacher, I can be half as good, loved and respected as he was," he said.

Nungaray described Barnes' fun side. He bumped into Barnes years after he graduated from Irvin, after he had turned 21. They talked for a bit, and Barnes smiled at him and gave him a recipe for a "Jack and Coke."
"Why?" Nungaray asked.

"You've always needed to chill out a bit," he said Barnes told him.
Susan Wiggs, student activities coordinator at Irvin High School, said Barnes was well-liked among students. "If I needed a chaperon, help with anything, he was always the person," she said.

Schools at El Paso Independent School District will not be in session until Aug. 23. "It's horrible," she said. "I am not sure how we all are going to react once we go back (to school)."

Barnes is probably not an ordinarily Jewish name, and this dude probably isn't a Jew. James Patrick doesn't sound like a Jew name, but a Christian name. There are loads of niggers with the last name Barnes.

I concur. Barnes is not at all an uncommon American name. However, I've never seen or heard of an acknowledged jew using it.

No, were just not stupid enough to call someone a Jew without any proof. There are tens of thousands of non Jews with the Barnes surname, including a poster in the UK section. What racial characteristics of the guy killed make him Jewish?

Jews can breed with other races without being race mixers in the ordinary sense. Their swindling genes survive in their descendants. They pollute any race that they breed with. I think that 1/16 Jews are still dangerous and 1/8 Jews are deadly.

Robert Augustus Barnes—grocer, commission merchant, bank president, stockholder, property owner, and philanthropist—was born November 29, 1808, in Washington, D.C. His father, Jesse, died when he was thirteen years old, at which time he moved to Louisville, Kentucky, to be raised by his uncle Richard Barnes.

He supplemented his rudimentary education with extensive reading, and became knowledgeable in several subjects. After working as a clerk for two years, he moved to St. Louis in 1830, and took a position in a mercantile house. At twenty-three years old, he opened his own grocery and commission business. While a merchant, he held partnerships with John W. Reel, Antoine S. Robinson, John C. Swon, George Sproule, and Anaw Buchanan.

In the early 1840s, Robert Barnes became president of the Bank of the State of Missouri, a position which he held for twenty-six years. In addition, he was a large stockholder in various local companies, including Belcher’s Sugar Refining Company, Third National Bank, and the St. Louis Railroad Company.

On January 28, 1845, Robert Barnes married Louise DeMun, the third daughter of Jules and Isabelle Gratiot DeMun. They had two children, De Mun and Isabelle Gratiot, neither of whom survived infancy.

Although he was a successful businessman and capitalist, he kept his financial status private during his life. He contributed to several charitable organizations, and left a portion of his wealth to found and endow a hospital in his name. He also owned property in St. Louis, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin. He left his fortune in cash, convertible securities, stocks, bonds, and property.

Robert Barnes died April 2, 1892, in St. Louis and is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
