Default My Germany Once Again - By EG

Well, here is my contribution, I wrote this song/poem last year.

My Germany, fold your wings
for just awhile; turn away your
eyes and disappear inside the smoke
the thunder; flames and fire -
You'd thought your best and
highest had fled; that your Land
had died -
My Germany do not fret
Our great enterprise will never end
Beautiful Eagle, from your lonely
height you watch and wait ..
.
My Germany, your Dreams
are forever in flight, soaring toward
the Sun that made the nations shake;
Singing the songs that freed
your pulse to quake; your heart to beat
Rest my Germany, Rest for now
No shades shall torture your sleep
For grave-eyed angels are tender
their eternal watches keep
My Germany be Strong in slumber
for we strive to save you still
and fight to guard you forever
as you hover within your bright
and shining Future -

My Germany, Beloved Country
We do not forsake nor forget
striving ever onward
until your Land and People
are once again Free.

O, Germany, open your eyes
to a new Dawn, My Germany
that we work to save and fight
to guard - Flee your shackles
in some far corner, hide and
and breathe softly , deeply
Awake my Germany Awake
to find that Far and Wide
throughout the World Entire
Our Proud People once again,
are Risen and glorified
Germany we do not forget
We hold within us the heights won
and keep the torches lit -
No slothful ease for us who bear
the Honour of your Name
My Germany, to you we give
Oath and Pledge to see
the work we do rise higher than
ever -
Beautiful Germany, to see you
once again Free is my desire

To hear my People's laughter
the happy cries of your Children
at play, secure and Proud again
there is no better fame nor wealth
than to walk silent and humble
within your Shadow; indifferent to both
earthly praise and blame

Mein Deutschland, falte Deine Fluegel

fuer eine Weile; wende ab Deinen Blick
und werde unsichtbar inmitten
qualmenden Donners; feurigen
Flammen -

Dich duenkte das Groesste und Beste

haette sich verfluechtigt; Dein Land
waer tot -

Mein Deutschland verzweifle nicht!
Unser grosses Unternehmen ist ohn Ende

holder Adler, wartend und herabblickend
von Deiner erhabenen Hoehe...

Default Truck of Fail

Over the undulations in my nocturnal escapade
trundles the bearer of manifold, exquisite sorrow.
Burdened by the weight of massless milliards,
- ghosts of men bound by, ungiving, the realm of opportunity no more -
whince the wheels, my skin it creepeth in earnest.
Each revolution a screw tighter, a cut deeper, a tooth grinder.
Angst plummets the fathomless; no hint of return this side of abeyance.
l must observe this short procession in its steady tribute;
sprinkling the embers of death confetti, blackened, ashened.
No rekindling for these tired remnants;
kissed by Misfortune, the breeze that hounds softly this Truck of Fail.

Default The Naked Tooth

Oh, phalanx of lovely sisters.
Stern sentries at the gate.
Wondrous, imperfect array.
Suffer I not a bicker among ye.
Mirrored, the stars, a burst of gladness.
Pride abashed may veil thy glory.
Ever motion abruptly ceases;
pilgrim quanta timeless journey.
Their sacrifice shall twinkle in our minds,
unforgotten.
Echoed in the visage of unborn vessels.

Default Smart Ass

Each finger offered, a usurious loan,
with bells they are heavy; ill tidings clang.
Delusion set gaily into the wildwind.
Dashed scintillas haunt my nescience.
Enveloped in downy ease.
Intoxication heeds not the bright,
mischievous, mocking childrens laughter
exposing the shallowness of this structure.
With effortless disgrace am I found,
raucously mewling our discordant sound.
Jalopy of rigamarolery,
artfully tuned to the most wretched key.

Default Path of Truth

The path awaits outstanding truth;
hardly brushed by feet of kings.
Hither drawn on ancient guide;
eternal reverberating.
Cringing under peerless beauty;
reason hinders not renown.
Effulgently beams the duty;
mighteous armies summon now.
Beacon, light this friendless chain,
gift unknown to ungulate.
Trample over miry dust,
oblivious unfortunate.

Default The Creeping Death

Steadily winding, unhurried deception;
ivy clambers the hapless tree.
Ungainly, burdened appendages weaken;
hopelessly serving embelished decree.
A spiritual garment to firmly enthrall,
quite seemly restriction, no finer a cut.
With infinite patience spin hands of the wily;
fashioning habit so furtively put.
Intrusion ascending on gnarly a vector;
guest cometh lord, a clamorous master.
Unlucky haven laments benign nature;
draughting great tankards of pang excites rapture.
Merry with many a melancholy,
no pity disturbs this miserable scene.
Mindfully sapping the lifeblood away,
insideous fangs of the sharpest extreme.

Default Lesser Days

Dolorous gems stream over puckered earth;
effusions of pearls and brilliants inundate budding vales.
Suspended momentarily over Oblivion
the resolve of martyrs surely wanes.
Eyes thrown wide; captured by soft, silent nothingness.
Between the ticks entire lives flurry.
Love and regret fade out of existence;
inevitably dashed on craggy thitherworld.
Smithereened vast treasure of sentience;
profanely scorned by unfilled forms,
ruthless guardians of forlorn hope;
freed vassals dancing to malefic incant.
Crimson rage violates the heart of gold,
tainted riches of the deep cascade;
befouled by hand and mouth of hoodlum;
stomping and whooping on the banks of Eternity.
Mere trifling for immortal course,
seductively beckoned by greater aeons.

My broken English tells me to better post Mr. Kiplings poem:

Quote:
The Stranger

The Stranger within my gate,
He may be true or kind,
But he does not talk my talk--
I cannot feel his mind.
I see the face and the eyes and the mouth,
But not the soul behind.

The men of my own stock,
They may do ill or well,
But they tell the lies I am wanted to,
They are used to the lies I tell;
And we do not need interpreters
When we go to buy or sell.

The Stranger within my gates,
He may be evil or good,
But I cannot tell what powers control--
What reasons sway his mood;
Nor when the Gods of his far-off land
Shall repossess his blood.

The men of my own stock,
Bitter bad they may be,
But, at least, they hear the things I hear,
And see the things I see;
And whatever I think of them and their likes
They think of the likes of me.

This was my father's belief
And this is also mine:
Let the corn be all one sheaf--
And the grapes be all one vine,
Ere our children's teeth are set on edge
By bitter bread and wine.

Default The Discarnate

Heedful now, daintily tread;
bellow the flameless blaze.
Obscure naught with silky thread
and sempiternal haze.
Mock homage to the emptiness;
rack eerie heart in grudging breast.
Truth is neither here or there
as life is war and all is fair.

Default Summer Night in Idoicy

Over summits, whirling, rush
throngs of tangled gossamer.
Foretoken of tempestuous,
inexorable ardour.
Titan rivals' brand salute,
sparking in temporal sphere.
Lucid phantoms rend aloft.
Fleeting apparition clear.
Elusory
epiphany.
Compounding hooves atop the air.
Great chariot wheels rumble.
Unfurling tremendous blare
disturbs colossal slumber.
Ripened teems swarm hither bound,
a copious, casual volly.
Draping all in silver gown
and scattering it's quarry.
Stirring.
Reviving.
Speedy barques skim hidden trails.
Whooshing cavalcades.
Dispersing far and wide their wake,
bedabbling parade.
Slip away the dulcified;
it's worth near spent in full.
Rattled squawks of flightless birds
usher in the lull.
Ephemeral.
Elemental.

Courtney Love does the math

The controversial singer takes on record label profits, Napster and "sucka VCs."

By Courtney Love

June 14, 2000 | Today I want to talk about piracy and music. What is piracy? Piracy is the act of stealing an artist's work without any intention of paying for it. I'm not talking about Napster-type software.

I'm talking about major label recording contracts.

I want to start with a story about rock bands and record companies, and do some recording-contract math:

This story is about a bidding-war band that gets a huge deal with a 20 percent royalty rate and a million-dollar advance. (No bidding-war band ever got a 20 percent royalty, but whatever.) This is my "funny" math based on some reality and I just want to qualify it by saying I'm positive it's better math than what Edgar Bronfman Jr. [the president and CEO of Seagram, which owns Polygram] would provide.

What happens to that million dollars?

They spend half a million to record their album. That leaves the band with $500,000. They pay $100,000 to their manager for 20 percent commission. They pay $25,000 each to their lawyer and business manager.

That leaves $350,000 for the four band members to split. After $170,000 in taxes, there's $180,000 left. That comes out to $45,000 per person.

That's $45,000 to live on for a year until the record gets released.

The record is a big hit and sells a million copies. (How a bidding-war band sells a million copies of its debut record is another rant entirely, but it's based on any basic civics-class knowledge that any of us have about cartels. Put simply, the antitrust laws in this country are basically a joke, protecting us just enough to not have to re-name our park service the Phillip Morris National Park Service.)

So, this band releases two singles and makes two videos. The two videos cost a million dollars to make and 50 percent of the video production costs are recouped out of the band's royalties.

The band gets $200,000 in tour support, which is 100 percent recoupable.

The record company spends $300,000 on independent radio promotion. You have to pay independent promotion to get your song on the radio; independent promotion is a system where the record companies use middlemen so they can pretend not to know that radio stations -- the unified broadcast system -- are getting paid to play their records.

All of those independent promotion costs are charged to the band.

Since the original million-dollar advance is also recoupable, the band owes $2 million to the record company.

If all of the million records are sold at full price with no discounts or record clubs, the band earns $2 million in royalties, since their 20 percent royalty works out to $2 a record.

Two million dollars in royalties minus $2 million in recoupable expenses equals ... zero!

How much does the record company make?

They grossed $11 million.

It costs $500,000 to manufacture the CDs and they advanced the band $1 million. Plus there were $1 million in video costs, $300,000 in radio promotion and $200,000 in tour support.

The company also paid $750,000 in music publishing royalties.

They spent $2.2 million on marketing. That's mostly retail advertising, but marketing also pays for those huge posters of Marilyn Manson in Times Square and the street scouts who drive around in vans handing out black Korn T-shirts and backwards baseball caps. Not to mention trips to Scores and cash for tips for all and sundry.

Add it up and the record company has spent about $4.4 million.

So their profit is $6.6 million; the band may as well be working at a 7-Eleven.

Of course, they had fun. Hearing yourself on the radio, selling records, getting new fans and being on TV is great, but now the band doesn't have enough money to pay the rent and nobody has any credit.

Worst of all, after all this, the band owns none of its work ... they can pay the mortgage forever but they'll never own the house. Like I said: Sharecropping. Our media says, "Boo hoo, poor pop stars, they had a nice ride. Fuck them for speaking up"; but I say this dialogue is imperative. And cynical media people, who are more fascinated with celebrity than most celebrities, need to reacquaint themselves with their value systems.

When you look at the legal line on a CD, it says copyright 1976 Atlantic Records or copyright 1996 RCA Records. When you look at a book, though, it'll say something like copyright 1999 Susan Faludi, or David Foster Wallace. Authors own their books and license them to publishers. When the contract runs out, writers gets their books back. But record companies own our copyrights forever.

The system's set up so almost nobody gets paid. . . . .

The Nigger

The nigger screams in nigger town
The star of Betlehem does not even bother to frown.
The nigger shrieks and cries
It's sound is really quite thrilling
And the lord is unto us, forgiving.
