Default #1 Ukraine War thread (and Russia and Putin)

Klitschko gets a fire-extinguisher discharged into his face:

Of course there's a lot more to it than that. On SF they are saying that the protests started out as being pro-EU, like the people of the Ukraine want mass immigration of shit-skins into their lives. But then the nationalists usurped the protests and it became a right-wing affair. So far, there are several dead, and some cops have been arrested by the protesters.

Quote:
A tense ceasefire was announced in Kiev on the fifth day of violence, with radical protesters and riot police holding their position. Opposition leaders are negotiating with the government, but doubts remain that they will be able to stop the rioters.

Read RT's live updates from Ukraine.

A ‘quiet period’ has been negotiated between police and opposition activists until 8pm local time (18:00 GMT), opposition leader Vitaly Klitschko said.

He promised he will be in Grushevskogo Street by the end of the ceasefire to report to the protesters on the meeting he and other opposition leaders are to have with President Viktor Yanukovich. The protesters promised to restrain from violence.

Eyewitnesses reported that the radical activists indeed stopped pelting police cordon with stones and firecrackers, which they had done for hours. Footage from the scene shows white steam clouds rising from where barricades of tires were previously burning.

Klitschko said police will not use stun grenades during the truce.

The meeting with the president will focus on the opposition’s demands to cancel a package of laws, which they see as dictatorial and draconian, Klitschko said. He added he will be demanding the resignation of the cabinet of ministers and an early presidential election.

“The chances are small, but they exist,” he said.

Default EUSSR getting itz thug on

From the FT

EU threatens to act unless Yanukovich ends Ukraine crackdown

The EU’s top official has warned Viktor Yanukovich, the Ukrainian president, that Brussels may take action unless he ends the violent crackdown on protesters, as European diplomats discussed the first steps towards possible sanctions against Kiev.

José Manuel Barroso, European Commission president, delivered the warning in a phone call with Mr Yanukovich on Thursday morning, the day after violence left as many as seven demonstrators dead in Kiev.

EU officials said Mr Yanukovich had promised not to impose a state of emergency and had agreed to meet EU mediators, led by Stefan Füle, the EU commissioner responsible for Ukrainian relations, in Kiev on Friday. Catherine Ashton, the EU foreign policy chief, may be part of a follow-on mission next week, officials said. Mr Barroso emphasised that dialogue was being prioritised ahead of Mr Füle’s visit.

The crisis was triggered by Mr Yanukovich’s last-minute decision in November not to sign a long-negotiated integration treaty with the EU and instead seek loans and closer links with Moscow. Anger has been stoked in the past week by the introduction of legislation banning protests and imposing harsh penalties on convicted demonstrators.

Mr Yanukovich on Thursday called a special session of parliament to discuss the crisis, although it was unclear if the move represented any form of compromise.

Volodymyr Rybak, the speaker of parliament, said all issues that had arisen in the past two months should be discussed when legislators meet next week. “The opposition and the parliamentary majority should come together and consider the questions which have arisen: the resignation of the government and those questions linked to laws passed by parliament,” he said in a statement on the president’s website.

Thousands of anti-government protesters had braved freezing overnight temperatures to guard their barricaded tent encampment on Kiev’s main square. But the streets were largely quiet on Thursday after opposition leaders told tens of thousands in the city centre on Wednesday night that they would give Mr Yanukovich 24 hours to respond to their demands for call snap elections.

The EU warnings came as ambassadors in Brussels met in a session diplomats said would include discussion of possible sanctions aimed at government figures responsible for the violence. According to several diplomats, ambassadors are expected to ask Lady Ashton to prepare an “options paper” that would include sanctions. The meeting was expected to go into the early evening.

“The president keeps saying all the right things but then doing all the wrong things,” said a British official.

Although several EU member states have been pushing for a harder line, Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, told reporters she believed it was too early for sanctions. “Neither the foreign minister nor I believe that sanctions are the order of the day,” Ms Merkel said at a cabinet meeting at her official retreat in Meseberg.

Lithuania, long one of the most anti-Russian members of the EU, has become one of the most vocal EU members advocating a harder line against Kiev. Linas Linkevicius, its foreign minister, on Wednesday became one of the first to suggest it might be time to impose sanctions. Several other member states, including the UK and Sweden, are actively considering measures.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Ukraine’s prime minister, Mykola Azarov, called the protests “a genuine attempt at a coup d’état”, and said the government would not give in to protesters’ demands for early elections.

The EU can impose a range of sanctions against individuals and businesses, including visa and travel bans and the freezing of assets, but all member states must agree on the measures.

The US has already revoked the visas of several people seen as responsible for violence and a state department spokesperson said additional measures were being considered.

Look at the remarkable restraint being shown by the Ukrainian police

Now ask yourself what would ZOG's response be to such scenes in DC?

The imperial capitol is such a police state that it would likely never get that far, but it all depends on who the rioters are, if they´re niggers, faggots, beaners, and twatz, Kwazog has a long history of behaving like a big fat sopping wet pussy when it come to dealing with such types.

Yep, you can count on the ZOG to demand a peaceful resolution after all the violence they've egged on and caused in Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Libya, Afghanistan and Syria. Now they want calm.

Could they plz just STFU?

Between Serbia and Syria

With the putschists in Kiev (and in the west of Ukraine) getting more violent, the government is getting wobbly. Surely they know that trying to appease the Empire by tolerating an armed rebellion is akin to letting the sharks have just a little bit of blood?

I still think the escalation of "protests" is a sign of desperation. They've been out in the streets for two months, accomplishing nothing. So they - or their sponsors, more likely - decided to kick it up a notch. Remember, this is "Game of Thrones" thinking at work: you either win (i.e. get power) or you die (politically rather than actually, though if things get out of hand....).

So far, what's been going on in Ukraine is still following the Serbian scenario, as I told RT last night. But unless the protests are dealt with in a firm, yet careful manner, it is entirely possible the next step might be an escalation to something like Libya or Syria: an "Arab Spring popular revolution" that spun off into outright civil war.

I don't think most Ukrainians, even the fanatical Banderists in the west, actually desire an armed confrontation. Play-acting a revolution following a Western script, at the expense of American taxpayers and with Victoria Nuland feeding you cookies is one thing. Getting shot is quite another.

Klitschko, Yasenyuk and Tyahnybok are either playing with forces they don't understand, or don't care how many people get hurt in the process of them seizing power (and then, predictably, proceeding to fight each other). They obviously care not a whit for law - otherwise they wouldn't be breaking it so blatantly - or democracy, otherwise they'd have waited for the 2016 elections. Some "representatives of Ukrainian people" indeed. Unless John McCain gets to define what it means to be Ukrainian these days.

As a footnote, I suppose commenting on events in Ukraine for two months now may technically make me an "Ukrainian affairs analyst", though please note that designation was of RT's choosing, not mine. I run an Institute for Serbian studies; can't
help it if Serbian issues are eerily similar to those unfolding in Kiev right now - and for a good reason, because the same power is behind both.

Is Mob Rule in Ukraine in America’s Interest?

By Patrick J. Buchanan • February 4, 2014, 12:00 AM

Despite our endless blather about democracy, we Americans seem to be able to put our devotion to democratic principles on the shelf, when they get in the way of our New World Order. In 2012, in the presidential election in Egypt, Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood won in a landslide. President Obama hailed the outcome. One year later, the Egyptian army ousted and arrested Morsi and gunned down a thousand members of his brotherhood. The coup was countenanced by John Kerry who explained that the Egyptian army was “restoring democracy.”

Comes now the turn of Ukraine.

In 2010, Viktor Yanukovych, in what neutral observers called a free and fair election, was chosen president. His term ends in 2015. Yet since November, protesters have occupied Maidan Square in Kiev, battling police, and howling for Yanukovych’s resignation. The United States appears now to be collaborating with Europe in bringing about the neutering or overthrow of that democratically elected government. Military coups, a la Cairo, and mob uprisings, a la Kiev—are these now legitimate weapons in the arsenal of democracy?

What did Yanukovych do to deserve ouster by the street? He chose Russia over Europe.

In the competition between Vladimir Putin and the European Union over whose economic association to join, Yanukovych was betrothed to the EU. But after an offer of $15 billion from Putin, and a cut in fuel prices to his country, Yanukovych jilted the EU and ran off with Russia. Yanukovych felt he could not turn down Putin’s offer.

Western Ukraine, which favors the EU, was enraged. So out came the protesters to bring down the president. And into Kiev flew John McCain to declare our solidarity with the demonstrators.

Kerry has now joined McCain in meddling in this matter that is none of America’s business, declaring in Munich that, “Nowhere is the fight for a democratic European future more important than today in Ukraine.” We “stand with the people of Ukraine,” said Kerry. But which people? The Ukrainians who elected Yanukovych and still support him or the crowds in Maidan Square that want him out and will not vacate their fortified encampments until he goes?

Kerry is putting us on the side of mobs that want to bring down the president, force elections, and take power. Yet, Americans would never sit still should similar elements, with similar objectives, occupy our capital. Reportedly, we are now colluding with the Europeans to cobble together an aid package, should Yanukovych surrender, cut the knot with Russia, and sign on with the EU. But if Putin’s offer of $15 billion was a bribe, what else is this?

While he rules a divided nation, Yanukovych has hardly been a tyrant. As the crowds grew violent, he dismissed his government, offered the prime ministry to a leader of the opposition, repealed the laws lately passed to crack down on demonstrations, and took sick for four days. But the street crowds, sensing he is breaking and smelling victory, are pressing ahead. There have now been several deaths among the protesters and police.

Putin is incensed, but inhibited by the need to keep a friendly face for the Sochi Olympics. Yet he makes a valid point. How would Europeans have reacted if, in the bailout crisis, he, Putin, had flown to Athens and goaded rioters demanding that Greece default and pull out of the eurozone?

How would the EU react if Putin were to hail the United Kingdom Independence Party, which wants out of the EU, or the Scottish National Party, which wants to secede from Great Britain?

Ukraine was briefly independent at the end of World War I, and has been again since the breakup of the Soviet Union. Still the religious, ethnic, cultural and historic ties between Russia and Ukraine are centuries deep. Eight million Ukrainians are ethnic Russians. In east Ukraine and the Crimea, the majority speak Russian and cherish these ties. Western Ukraine looks to Europe. Indeed, parts belonged to the Habsburg Empire. Pushed too far and pressed too hard, Ukraine could disintegrate.

Security police who have questioned jailed rioters seem to believe we Americans are behind what is going on. And given the National Endowment for Democracy’s clandestine role in the color-coded revolutions of a decade ago in Central and Eastern Europe, that suspicion is not unwarranted.

Nor is Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov entirely wrong when he says, “a choice is being imposed” on Ukraine, and European politicians are fomenting protests and riots “by people who seize and hold government buildings, attack the police and use racist and anti-Semitic and Nazi slogans.”

If, as a result of street mobs paralyzing a capital, a democratically elected Ukrainian government falls, we could not only have an enraged and revanchist Russia on our hands, but a second Cold War.

And we will have set a precedent that could come to haunt Europe, as the rising and proliferating parties of the populist right, that wish to bring down the European Union, learn by our example.

Puppets of Maidan. US ZOG is frustrated that their lackeys in the EU aren't tough enough

‘Fuck the EU,’ frustrated Nuland says to Pyatt, in alleged leaked phone call (UPDATE)

In a conversation leaked online and posted to YouTube on Feb. 4, voices closely resembling those of U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland discuss loosely the roles of Ukrainian opposition leaders and the United Nations, and frustration over inaction and indecision by the European Union in solving Ukraine’s political crisis.

The woman, who sounds like Nuland, can be heard on the recording saying “fuck the EU,” while the man, who sounds like Pyatt, refers to Vitali Klitschko as the “top dog” among opposition leaders but implies that Klitschko is too inexperienced to hold a top government post.

Same thing Serbian linked to. Just putting it up to bump this and so that people are more likely to play the recording.

Quote:
Nuland: Whaddya think?

Pyatt: I think we're in play the Klitschko piece is obviously the complicated electron here. Especially the announcement of him as deputy prime minister and you've seen my notes on the trouble in the marriage right now so we're trying to get a read really fast where he is on this stuff. But I think your argument to him which you'll need to make, I think that's the next phone call you want to set up is exactly the one you made to (nickname for Yatseniuk). And I'm glad you sort of put him on the spot on where he fits in this scenario. And I'm very glad that he said what he said in response.

Nuland: Good. I don't think Klitsch should go into the government. I don't think it's a good idea.

Pyatt: Yeah. I guess... in terms of him not going into the government let him stay out and do his political homework and stuff i"m just thinking in terms of sort of the process moving ahead we want to keep the moderate democrats together. The problem is going to be Tiahnybok and his guys and I'm sure that's part of what Yanukovych is calculating on all this.

Nuland: (Breaks in) I think Yats is the guy that who's got the economic experience the governing experience he's the... what he needs is Klitsch and Tiahnybok (Oleh, leader of a nationalist party who has been pushing confrontation with the Ukrainian government) on the outside he needs to be talking to them four times a week you know. I just think Klitch going in he's going to be at that level working for Yatsinyuk it's just not going to work.

Pyatt: Yeah, no, I think that's right. Ok. Good. Do you want us to set up a call with him as the next step?

Nuland: My understanding from that call that you tell me was that the big three were going into their own meeting and that Yats was going to offer in that context a... three plus one conversation or three plus two with you. Is that not how you understood it?

Pyatt: No. I mean I think that's what he proposed but I think just knowing the dynamic that's been with them where Klitschko has been the top dog, he's going to take a while to shop up for whatever meetings they've got and he's probably talking to his guys at this point so I think you reaching out directly to him helps with the personality management among the three and it gives you also a chance to move fast on all this stuff and put us behind it before they all sit down and he explains why he doesn't like it.

Nuland: Ok, good. I'm happy. why don't you reach out to him and see if he wants to talk before or after.

Pyatt: Ok, will do. Thanks.

Nuland: Ok... one more wrinkle for you Jeff. I can't remember if I told you this or if I only told Washington this that when I talked to Jeff Feltman this morning he had a new name for the UN guy Robert Serry did I write you that this morning?

Pyatt: Yeah I saw that.

Nuland: Ok. He's now gotten both Serry and Ban ki-Moon to agree that Serry could come in Monday or Tuesday. That would be great I think to help glue this thing and to have the UN help glue it and, you know, F--- the EU.

Pyatt: No, exactly. And I think we've got to do something to make it stick together because you can be pretty sure that if it does start to gain altitude that the Russians will working behind the scenes to try to torpedo it. And again the fact that this is out there right now, I'm still trying to figure out in my mind why Yanukovych (garbled) that. In the meantime there's a Party of Regions faction meeting going on right now and I'm sure there's a lively argument going on in that group at this point. But anyway we could land jelly side up on this one if we move fast. So let me work on Klitschko and if you can just keep... we want to try to get somebody with an international personality to come out here and help to midwife this thing. The other issue is some kind of outreach to Yanukovych but we probably regroup on that tomorrow as we see how things start to fall into place.

Nuland: So on that piece Jeff when I wrote the note Sullivan's come back to me VFR saying you need Biden and I said probably tomorrow for an atta boy and to get the deets (details) to stick. So Biden's willing.

Pyatt: Ok. Great. Thanks.
I don't know if Nuland has any jewish ancestry, didn't bother to look. I don't think it matters much, since she's so high in this government and married to first-tier kike
Robert_Kagan Robert_Kagan

Some claim that Pyatt is jewish but I looked a bit and am not finding anything useful.

Wayne Madsen, recently, on Geoffrey Pyatt:
Quote:
Pyatt’s history suggests that he conforms to the neo-con philosophy of an aggressive America pushing its influence and policies on all the nations of the world. Both Pyatt and McFaul have targeted the domestic opposition in their host countries with a view toward fomenting rebellion and political unrest. Pyatt’s State Department background strongly suggests he has had some experience in subterfuge, mostly from his posting to Honduras in the early 1990s, a few years after the CIA incubated a deadly force of right wing murderous vigilantes in that nation. Since arriving in Kyiv since August 2013, Pyatt has spent more time currying contacts with Ukraine’s Jewish community than in talks with members of the Ukrainian government. Pyatt is seen more at synagogues, seminars on anti-Semitism, and memorials than in Ukrainian government ministries or even Ukrainian Orthodox or Catholic churches. At the same time, Pyatt gives quiet support to the umbrella protest organizations that include FEMEN naked women protesters who have aggressively attacked symbols of Christianity throughout Ukraine, including cutting down a Christian cross in Kyiv.

Ukraine: A Maidan government or nothing says opposition

14/02 00:50 CET

Protesters marched on Independence Square in Kyiv after staging a one-hour strike on Thursday called by an opposition leader and ex-boxing champion Vitaly Klitschko.

The walk-out came on the final day of the visit by the EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele. He had talked of the need for a new “inclusive government”. The opposition reiterated its stance on any compromise. They want to form “Maidan Government”.

“As for the post of prime minister there is no need to try and barter government portfolios with the opposition. Our position is clear, we do not accept the prime minister’s chair we will only accept the full responsibility of the country which means forming the cabinet of ministers,” Arseny Yatsenyuk Leader of the Fatherland Opposition Party told reporters.

President Yanukovych who had the second of his two meetings with the Stefan Fuele had already offered a coalition government to the opposition.

The EU Commissioner, who also visited those injured in three months of pro-EU protests, opposition casualties and wounded police officers, called on the two sides to agree on constitutional reform.

Russia: West creating new fault lines on Ukraine

International » World
MOSCOW, February 15, 2014
Updated: February 15, 2014 00:12 IST

Russia blasted the West for pushing Ukraine to break up with Russia and creating new fault lines in Europe.

Following talks with visiting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the West was building “spheres of influence” and imposing an “either-or” choice on Ukraine.

“I fully agree with Frank-Walter that there should be no spheres of influence. But dragging Ukraine to one side, telling it that it needs to choose ‘either or,’ with the European Union or with Russia, [the West] is in fact trying to create such a sphere of influence,” Mr. Lavrov said at a joint press conference with his German counterpart. “That is obvious and no nice words can change that.”

The Russian Minister warned the West against interfering in the Ukrainian crisis.

“I think it is not correct and polite to speak about freedom of choice and keep sending emissaries to Kiev without invitation on a daily basis in order to persuade the Ukrainian leadership to make the choice that is being pushed by the EU and the United States,” he said.

“We believe Ukrainians themselves should find a way out of the political crisis …We expect all other partners of Ukraine to follow the same principle,” Mr. Lavrov said.

Competition
Mr. Steinmeier admitted that there had been “some sort of competition” between Russia and the West over Ukraine that “was not helpful.” He said it would be counterproductive for EU-Russia ties to see Ukraine as an element in “a geopolitical chess game.”

‘Moment of truth’
Ahead of his talks with the German Foreign Minister, Mr. Lavrov said that relations between Russia and the EU had reached “moment of truth” over Ukraine.

“Europe’s history convincingly proves that peace and stability on the continent prevailed when Russia was an active player in European affairs, whereas attempts to isolate our country inevitably set in motion processes that led to the catastrophes of the world wars,” Mr. Lavrov wrote in an article for the Kommersant daily on Thursday.

Tensions high in Ukraine after at least 21 die in fiery clashes

From Victoria Butenko. Greg Botelho and Phil Black, CNN
February 19, 2014 -- Updated 0501 GMT (1301 HKT)

Kiev, Ukraine (CNN) -- Downtown Kiev was aglow in fire early Wednesday, as demonstrators undeterred by a bloody day on the streets staked their claim to the heart of the Ukrainian capital and, they hope, the heart of the country itself.

Such flames have been a constant for three months, acting as fiery barricades all around Kiev's Maidan, or Independence Square, for protesters. Yet the flames grew more ominous on Tuesday as at least 21 people died in fresh clashes between government forces and activists.

What began with protests over President Viktor Yanukovych's backpedaling from a trade pact with the European Union -- a move that the opposition maligned, accusing Yanukovych of trying to cozy up to Russia rather than the West -- has spawned into something much larger.

Ukraine Protests: Israeli Ex-Officer Leads Militant Group

Feb 18th

A former Israeli army officer is playing a leading role in the anti-government protests in Ukraine, PressTV has reported.

According to reports, the unnamed Israeli is commanding a group of 20 Ukrainian militants while four other Israelis, who had also previously served in the army, are reported to have taken part in opposition rallies in Ukraine's capital, Kiev.

The Israelis were born in Ukraine but migrated to Israel and joined its armed forces before returning to the European country for the demonstrations.

Ukrainian media has also said that an Israeli tycoon provides financial support to the opposition in Ukraine, adding that Israel's Mossad intelligence agency is one of the instigators of the unrest in the country.

Despite calls by Jewish leaders to remain neutral, young Jews have been on the front lines of protests against Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich, the Jerusalem Post wrote last December.

Alexandra Oleynikova, a young Jewish activist involved in organizing Limmud conferences, told the Post that while some Jews stayed away out of fear, other young Ukrainian Jews who work for international organizations such as JDC, Hillel and Limmud are "really active" in offering support as well as "organizing the barricades".

According to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA): "A number of young Jews are involved in the protests, which have drawn together a diverse coalition of liberal youth and opposition party leaders, including members of the ultranationalist Svoboda (Freedom) party, whose leader, Oleh Tyahnybok, has freely trafficked anti-Semitic stereotypes".

The Ukranian protests were sparked after Yanukovych spurned a trade and investment deal with EU and sought financial help through Russia.
Russia's Vladimir Putin agreed to buy billions of dollars worth of Ukrainian government bonds, and to reduce the price of gas exports.

Prime Minister Mykola Azarov offered his resignation in an attempt to end the protests gripping cities across the country, while the parliament repealed the controversial anti-protests laws that had caused unrest in the country.

The Ukrainian parliament also passed a law providing amnesty to protesters detained during recent unrest.

However, Azarov's resignation and the elimination of the anti-protest laws met only two of the protesters' demands.

Demonstrators are also calling for Yanukovich to step down and for Ukraine to sign an EU deal. The release of political prisoners, including former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, has also been requested.

A ceasefire has been agreed, after prolonged unrest across the country, but it seems fragile in the face of increased fear of civil war.

Jews helping the pro United States, European Union, and IMF portion of the protests?

Who could of seen that coming?

Not that the pro Russian Ukrainian alliance side is any better. What we are witnessing here is large powerful oligarchic forces carving up a nation for the entire world to see in plain sight. It's being broadcasted live on our television sets.
