Gas shortages could see German schools shut – official

Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger has called for schools to be classed as ‘critical infrastructure’ by winter

Schools and other educational facilities in Germany should be classed as critical infrastructure to prevent their closure this winter due to possible gas shortages, the country’s education minister has argued.

Speaking to Germany’s Rheinische Post newspaper on Thursday, Bettina Stark-Watzinger said it should be a priority for Olaf Scholz’s government to make sure that schools and universities remain open even if the country ends up running low on gas this coming winter.

German officer convicted of plotting to kill politicians

A lieutenant who posed as a Syrian asylum-seeker has been found guilty of preparing terrorist attacks

A German military officer who pretended to be a Syrian refugee has been convicted of charges stemming from a terrorist plot to kill politicians and other public figures.

The 33-year-old German armed forces soldier, identified by authorities only as 1st Lt. Franco A., was found guilty on Friday of preparing a serious act of violent subversion, as well as weapons crimes and fraud. He was ordered to serve five-and-a-half years in prison, nearly matching the six years and three months that had been requested by prosecutors.

Franco A. fraudulently received state benefits after registering as an asylum-seeker, and he may have intended to get migrants blamed for his planned attacks. His legal troubles began after he was caught in February 2017 while trying to retrieve a handgun that he’d hidden in a Vienna airport bathroom.

Berlin warns against waiving ‘a white flag’ at Russia

Germany must cut back on Moscow’s gas supply despite disruption fears, economy minister says

Germany will not revive Nord Stream 2, a pipeline built to deliver gas from Russia through the Baltic Sea, despite fears of supply disruptions, the country’s Economy Minister, Robert Habeck, has said.

Construction of Nord Stream 2 was completed last year, but Berlin halted its certification shortly after Russia launched its military campaign in Ukraine in late February.

Habeck told German broadcaster ZDF on Thursday that the country must conserve natural gas and continue decreasing its dependence on supplies from Russia.

He ruled out the use of Nord Stream 2 saying “It would be raising the white flag.”

Severing ties with Russia is ‘absurd and dangerous’ – German official

Saxony’s prime minister calls for ‘pragmatism’ in relations with Russia

Isolating Russia and ending economic cooperation with Moscow is dangerous for Germany, Prime Minister of Saxony Michael Kretschmer told Die Zeit newspaper this week, reiterating his call for a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Ukraine.

“I think the idea of isolating Russia permanently or never again cooperating economically is absurd and dangerous… A Russia that is oriented towards China and has no ties to Europe is much more dangerous for us,” Kretschmer told the news outlet.

The official said he was concerned with the impact of the sanctions on Russia on the German economy and energy security. He called for “pragmatism” in relations with Moscow and for the EU to facilitate peace talks and a “freeze” of the conflict in Ukraine, adding that a ceasefire would not only end the deaths, but “create an opportunity for the supply of raw materials,” most notably fossil fuels and grains.

German economy to lose $265 billion in added value due to war, high energy prices, study says

Reuters

BERLIN, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Germany's economy will lose more than 260 billion euros ($265 billion) in added value by 2030 due to the Ukraine war and high energy prices, spelling negative effects for the labour market, according to a study by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB).

In comparison with expectations for a peaceful Europe, Germany's price-adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) will be 1.7% lower next year and there will be about 240,000 fewer people in employment, said the study published on Tuesday.

Most German howitzers in Ukraine out of order – MP

Only five out of 15 Western-supplied PzH 2000 howitzers are still operational in Ukraine, says a German politician

Most German PzH 2000 howitzers that have been supplied to Ukraine by the West have already broken down and are in need of repair, according to German Bundestag member Marcus Faber, who recently visited Ukraine.

In a Wednesday interview with the German news outlet NTV, the politician claimed he was surprised to learn from Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense that only five of the 15 German-made PzH 2000 howitzers supplied to Ukraine by Berlin and Amsterdam were still operational. He added that the cause of the failures was not Russian fire, but the fact that the guns were “massively used” by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Israeli families of Munich Olympics massacre victims to boycott German ceremony marking 50th anniversary

BY JACOB GURVIS AUGUST 11, 2022 5:14 PM

(JTA) — All but one of the family members of the 11 Israeli athletes murdered during the 1972 Munich Olympics are planning to boycott a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the incident, calling the financial compensation that the German government will offer them “a joke.”

According to a German government memo obtained by The New York Times, various agencies have thus far paid a total of 4.6 million euros ($4.8 million) to the families, and Germany is expected to offer an additional 5.4 million euros ($5.6 million).

The families are reportedly asking for a sum about 20 times larger than that and are urging Israel’s government to join in boycotting the ceremony, saying that Germany’s actions before, during and after the incident were insufficient and left the Israeli athletes at risk. Details have emerged suggesting that Germany had advance notice of a threat of violence.

Germany’s business model is broken – minister

Germans must swallow “bitter medicine” after years of cheap Russian energy, economy minister Habeck says

German Economy and Climate Action Minister Robert Habeck threw out the country’s entire business model on Monday, saying it relied on cheap energy imports from Russia that will never return. Habeck’s comments came during his announcement of a special tax on natural gas, intended to redistribute the impact of energy shortages between companies and the general population.

“Germany developed a business model that was largely based on dependence on cheap Russian gas,” Habeck told reporters in Berlin, noting that this also meant dependence on an “enemy” of international law, “liberal democracy and its values.”

“This model has failed and it is not coming back,” he said.

Because Russia has “arbitrarily” interrupted gas deliveries to the EU, Habeck claimed, Germany needs to “rescue companies that have got into difficulties and have to bear that as a national economy,” calling it “bitter medicine” that has to be taken in the process.

German security official warns about ‘enemies of the state’

North Rhine-Westphalia’s interior minister has said the energy crisis and rising prices could be exploited by conspiracy theorists

The current energy crisis and inflation could lead to protests in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia, the region’s interior minister has warned. Herbert Reul added that these issues are being exploited by conspiracy theorists, whom he described as a threat to the German state.

Appearing on n-tv’s Fruhstart program on Monday, Reul said that “we’re now no longer talking about protesters, but rather almost something like new enemies of the state, who are establishing themselves there.”

The official expressed concern that, when things like the “energy crisis, prices, a cold living room” become “really tangible,” conspiracy theorists’ narratives could gain more currency among the population.
(...)
According to Reul, despite all the concerns he mentioned, the establishment of a crisis committee in light of a possible energy crisis would be premature. What has to be ensured is that the local police can continue working no matter what, he asserted.

“We have additional tanks, 40 tanks with 40,000 liters’ capacity, that we are distributing among the police across the region, so that we are fit for action if worst comes to worst,” the interior minister explained.

Ukraine calls Germany ‘addict’ then offers hit

As Kiev slams German calls for Nord Stream 2, Ukraine’s gas operator makes a bid to Berlin

Even as Kiev’s Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba condemned the German “addiction” to Russian gas on Friday, the Ukrainian transit operator said it was willing to carry all the Russian energy Berlin might need, for a fee. The conflicting communications from Kiev came after a senior Bundestag official called for the opening of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, and as Gazprom informed the EU that Nord Stream 1 would shut down for maintenance at the end of August.

“Calls by some German politicians to launch NS2 for a little while and close it later are totally irrational,” Kuleba tweeted out on Friday, in English. “This resembles drug addiction, when a person says ‘Just one last time!’ without realizing the devastating consequences of each ‘last time.’ Addiction to Russian gas kills!”

Germans warned of toilet paper shortage

The energy crisis could severely affect production, an industry body warns

The crisis on the European gas market could lead to reduced production of toilet paper in Germany, according to Martin Krengel, chairman of the nation’s paper industry association, Die Papierindustrie.

“We are particularly dependent on gas for the production of tissue paper. Without it, we will no longer be able to provide security of supply,” Krengel said in a statement published on Thursday.

According to data provided by Die Papierindustrie, each German citizen uses an average of 134 rolls of toilet paper per year. “In the current energy crisis, our top priority is to provide people with this important commodity,” Krengel stressed.

Germany vows to support Ukraine ‘for years’

Kiev may still need new heavy weapons next summer, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock suggests

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia could “could go on for years”, but Berlin will keep supporting Kiev all the way, Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has said.

“Unfortunately, we have to assume that Ukraine will still need new heavy weapons from its friends next summer,” Baerbock told the Bild tabloid on Sunday.

“Ukraine is also defending our freedom, our peace,” the minister said, adding that Berlin will support Kiev “financially and militarily — and for as long as it is necessary, full stop!”

Baerbock’s pledge comes despite her admission earlier this week that Germany’s military is facing an “absolute deficit” of hardware, due to arms shipments to Ukraine.

Germany reaches limit in arms deliveries to Kiev

The German Army needs its weapons stocks to be able to guarantee national defense, Christine Lambrecht has said

The German Armed Forces can’t send any more weapons to Ukraine if they want to retain their ability to defend their own nation, Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht told the German government on Tuesday. As the defense minister, her focus is Germany’s national security, she added.

“I have to admit, as the Minister of Defense, … we are reaching the limits of what we can give away from the Bundeswehr [stocks],” Lambrecht told the cabinet during a meeting on Tuesday. The German Armed Forces – the Bundeswehr – must be able to “guarantee” security at the regional and national levels, she said, vowing to ensure that this “continues to be the case.”

Most Germans want talks with Russia – poll

Over 60% of respondents opposed supplying more heavy weapons to Ukraine

The majority of Germans want the West to take concrete steps to initiate talks with Russia to end the Ukraine conflict, a recent survey has indicated.

Published on Wednesday, the poll commissioned by Germany’s RTL/ntv-Trendbarometer was conducted from August 26 through August 29, with 1,011 people taking part.

According to the survey, some 77% of Germans believe that the West should make concrete efforts to try to launch negotiations with Russia, which could help bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine. Only 17% would oppose such talks. When asked whether it is the right thing for Western leaders to keep phoning Russian President Vladimir Putin, 87% of the respondents replied in the affirmative, with 11% against.

German minister vows to back Ukraine ‘no matter what voters think’

Annalena Baerbock says supporting Kiev matters more than expected winter unrest

Even if Germans take to the streets over energy prices, Berlin must support Ukraine by maintaining anti-Russian sanctions, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock told a conference in Prague on Wednesday.

While much of the German cabinet was at a working retreat in Castle Meseberg outside Berlin, Baerbock was in Prague for a conference dubbed “Democracy’s Clear and Present Danger: How Do We Respond?” organized by the NGO Forum 2000.

“If I give the promise to people in Ukraine – ‘We stand with you, as long as you need us’ – then I want to deliver. No matter what my German voters think, but I want to deliver to the people of Ukraine,” Baerbock said at one point.

Germany made ‘fantastic admission’ – Lavrov

The Russian FM’s comment came after his German counterpart said Berlin would back Kiev no matter what its own people think

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has described as “fantastic” a recent comment by his German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock, about Berlin’s commitment to backing Kiev. The German official said on Wednesday that her country’s government would stand by Ukraine regardless of what German voters think about it.

On Thursday, Lavrov delivered a speech at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations marking the start of the academic year. In it, he said that many Western politicians are in the grip of a “Russophobic obsession.”

As a case in point, the minister cited Baerbock’s remark, which she made in Prague on Wednesday.

According to Lavrov, what the German official said effectively boiled down to the following: “Yes, our citizens are suffering but they will have to suffer more because we will be supporting Ukraine no matter what.”
