The main point is last 15 years the regime of Assads backed anti-american radical muslim forces like al-kaeda and early "Islanic state" in neighbouring Iraq, granted assylum for radicals and had training center on Syrian territory, in hope to befriend muslim opposition forces and to drag Americans deeper into the slaughter in Iraq.

There can be another reason why survival of Assad's regime is critically important for Putin's system. Putin deadly needs such states as Venezuela, Syria, Nikaragua, N.Korea or similar regimes in Africa, as a possible asylum for his officials and families, a safe country where he could live with stolen money if the putinism in Russia fails.
