A Huddersfield man who sexually assaulted a vulnerable woman also attacked two other females, it has been revealed.

Naveed Khawaja, 55, of Yew Street, Huddersfield was jailed for three years at Leeds Crown Court on May 9 after being convicted of three sexual assaults. The 55-year-old was arrested on October 11, 2021 following a report that a man had attended the home of a victim earlier that month.

Once in the house he committed a sexual assault on the victim who was particularly vulnerable. An investigation was launched by officers from Kirklees CID who on reviewing the offence, linked Khawaja with two unsolved offences in Bradford from July 2017 and October 2019.

Twenty-one same-sex couples took Romania to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), arguing the lack of legal recognition of their relationships "deprived them of their dignity as spouses".

In a ruling on Tuesday, the ECHR found the country had violated Article 8 of the European Convention, which protects the right to respect for family life, by not giving LGBTQ+ couples any means of legally safeguarding their relationships.

The Romanian couples cited the disadvantages faced under current domestic laws, such as being barred from mortgage programmes, spousal bereavement leave or joint health insurance.

The ECHR said none of the government's arguments outweighed the couples' concerns, and further ruled that recognising same-sex civil unions would not harm the institution of marriage.

The ruling will become legally binding after a three-month period in which both sides have the right to appeal to a higher court of the ECHR.

If neither do, the ruling will stand and lead to Romania being required to implement legislation to introduce same-sex civil unions.

Gang rapes have hit another record high in Germany in 2022, reaching a pace of more than two a day in the country, according to data released by the government after a request for information from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

The data shows that the total number of gang rapes hit 789, higher than last year when the number hit 677 and the previous record high of 710 in 2019. In 2017, there were 380 gang rapes recorded, more than 50 percent fewer than recorded in 2022.

The data shows that exactly 50 percent of all gang rapes are committed by foreigners. However, as Remix News previously reported, individuals with a migration background, or even those with dual citizenship, who number nearly 4 million, are simply listed as “German.” As a result, it is unclear what percentage of these rapes were committed by ethnic Germans.

In a statement on the statistics published on Facebook, the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party writes: “The figures on the composition of the perpetrators are also clear and show that all claims that there is no connection between mass migration and the collapse of internal security are lies. There were 471 suspected perpetrators with a German passport compared to 472 foreigners – so around half of the perpetrators are foreigners, although their share of the total population is ‘only’ around 14 percent. However, the 50 percent does not include the number of German suspects with foreign origins! The main countries of origin of the foreign suspects were once again Syria and Afghanistan.”

The data shows the strongest increase in rapes coincided with Germany’s migrant population swelling due to the 2016 migrant crisis. That was the same year that the infamous sexual assaults took place in Cologne on New Year’s Eve, in which an estimated 1,049 women were sexually assaulted and sometimes gang raped by men from North Africa and the Middle East.

The U.K. Home Office has processed just 1 percent of the 45,000 individuals who entered Britain illegally and claimed asylum in the year to March, government figures revealed.

The data published on Thursday regarding the status of irregular migrants in Britain showed that 44,797 people that the government is aware of arrived on England’s southern shore via small boats from mainland Europe in the year to March 2023. Of those, 40,444 claimed asylum.

As of May 25, the government had only processed 504 claims, just over 1 percent of cases in the past year, granting asylum in 61 percent of those cases.

In fact, the government has only processed 16 percent of the 11,902 asylum cases submitted by small boat migrants dating back to 2018, meaning some of the 88,221 individuals arriving in Britain using this method have potentially been waiting five years for a decision on their asylum application.

The European Parliament (EP) is set to adopt a new resolution on the rule of law in Hungary and the freezing of EU funds at its plenary session on June 1, opposition news portal Népszava reports after having seen the draft.

The draft five-party resolution questions whether Hungary will be able to credibly hold the EU Council presidency in 2024 while violating the EU’s core values and failing to abide by the principle of loyal cooperation.

Polish energy giant PKN Orlen is building a new oil refinery in the Płock area of central Poland, and the influx of foreign labor it entails is making the local population nervous about what will happen to their tourist businesses and the security of their community.

The cost of the investment is understood to be €3 billion, and the contractor chosen, Hyundai Engineering, is hiring workers from the Middle East and Asia for the job. The wave of foreign nationals this has already brought and is expected to continue to bring into the area, along with the scale of the project, is causing ripples in Płock’s local communities.

The rural village of Koszelówka is home to a population of just 180 people and has developed tourism around a local lake. Orlen is already purchasing beds in the area to house the workforce necessary for the construction of the new oil refinery.

The owners of the tourist businesses are concerned that they will lose clients who are put off by the mass of foreign workers, especially regular customers who come back year after year. They report that schools that used to organize spring and summer camps are asking questions about what the presence of so many foreign nationals will mean for security. Although they emphasize that they are not prejudiced, they nevertheless are still worried about their businesses.

Search continues for 500 missing migrants stranded in the Mediterranean

A boat carrying 500 people, including a newborn baby born on board, has disappeared in the Mediterranean after distress calls were ignored by the Italian and Maltese authorities. Search efforts by several sea rescue charities continue.

According to the Italian non-governmental organization EMERGENCY, 500 refugees and migrants are stranded on board a boat in distress in the Mediterranean Sea after it departed Libya for Europe.

Following a shipwreck in the Greek Aegean waters, three migrants have been reported dead and a dozen missing.

Three migrants are thought to have died and 12 are reported missing after a boat carrying migrants capsized off the Greek tourist island of Mykonos in the Aegean Sea.

Greek state broadcaster ERT News on Friday (May 26) reported that the three recovered bodies were two women and one man.

The authorities were reportedly alerted after two people were discovered by passing ships off the island Thursday night. According to news agency dpa citing Greek radio, they reported their boat had capsized and that there were another six people on board.

According to ERT News, a "large search and rescue operation" involving two coast guard vessels, a helicopter and land vehicles has been underway since 6:30 a.m. on Friday.

Amin Nikbonyad, of Broxholme Lane, Wheatley, Doncaster, was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 18 months by South Yorkshire Magistrates on Monday after he was found guilty of sexual assault by touching.

He was also ordered to complete 35 hours unpaid work and must sign the sex offenders register for 10 years, as well as pay a victim surcharge of £100. The court heard how on Sunday January 23 2022, the victim boarded a Northern service from Wakefield to Leeds.
