The Swedish city of Boras has removed a commercial that was supposed to promote the municipality following pressure from a local newspaper, which argued that the video featured too many white people.

In the video, produced by the municipal company Boras TME, ordinary Boras inhabitants are depicted engaging in everyday tasks.

"But the film completely lacks people with a foreign background," complained the local newspaper Boras Tidning, ringing the alarm bells over the alarming lack of perceived "diversity" in the "whites-only" ad.

The criticism forced Boras TME to respond, as market manager Alexandra Perez Liberg admitted to errors being made and promised improvement.

"I understand the criticism and we will take it on board. The film is now removed from all our platforms until an updated film is in place. The new version will contain what is in our mission, that is to represent diversity and inclusion," Perez Liberg told the newspaper.

The company also pledged to go a step further and review "other market material" so that "the diversity becomes even more evident even there."

Boras is a city and the seat of the eponymous municipality in Vastra Gotaland County in southern Sweden with about 66,000 inhabitants. It is an industrial city and an important railway junction. According to the city's own statistics, 32 percent of its inhabitants have a foreign background.

Agency warns Sweden may miss CO2 targets with biofuel cut

STOCKHOLM, May 8 (Reuters) - Sweden will struggle to hit its 2030 emissions targets, a government agency warned on Monday, after the country's minority coalition cut the biofuel that must be added to diesel and gasoline.

The right-wing Sweden Democrats-backed coalition government has already cut fuel taxes, raised tax breaks for people driving to work and ended new electric vehicles subsidies.

Mixing in biofuels from renewable sources is a way to reduce emissions from cars, but the government said at the weekend it will cut the required amount of biofuel to 6% in 2024 and for it to remain at that level until the end of 2026.

Sweden, Turkey to hold NATO discussions 'soon', Swedish foreign ministry says

STOCKHOLM, May 29 (Reuters) - The foreign ministers of Sweden and Turkey will meet "soon" to discuss Stockholm's delayed bid to join NATO, the Swedish foreign ministry said on Monday.

Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership following Russia's invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022. However, while Finland joined the Western military alliance in April, Sweden's bid has been held up by objections from Turkey and Hungary.

U.S. and NATO officials are increasingly optimistic that Sweden will join the military alliance as its newest member by this summer, bringing an advanced military already closely integrated with Western allies into the fold as tensions with Russia increase.

Sweden last year announced it was giving up 200 years of military nonalignment and would seek to join NATO along with neighboring Finland in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Finland joined earlier this year, but NATO ally Turkey has blocked Sweden’s accession for months over disputes with the Swedish government.

Many officials and experts who track the matter say Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan, fresh off a presidential election victory, is now preparing to give the green light to Sweden joining NATO by the time of an upcoming alliance summit scheduled for early July in Vilnius, Lithuania—though they stopped short of declaring it a done deal. (Another major question at the summit is whether and how Ukraine would ever join NATO.)

“We’ve fulfilled our part,” said a Swedish military official, speaking on condition of anonymity to talk candidly about closed-door talks. “Now it’s up to the alliance and Turkey and Hungary to do their part.” Hungary, which has also blocked Sweden as a new member, has hinted to alliance members that it would not block Sweden’s NATO bid on its own.

WASHINGTON, June 14 (Reuters) - The top Republican on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee said on Wednesday he was blocking a $735 million arms sale to Hungary because its government has refused to approve Sweden's bid to join NATO.

"Given promises that were made to me and others last year that this vote would be done, and the fact that it is now June and still not done, I decided that the sale of new U.S. military equipment to Hungary will be on hold," Senator Jim Risch said in a statement.

The Swedish government is examining whether it could change the law to stop people setting the Koran on fire in public, as recent burnings of the Muslim holy book have damaged Sweden's security, Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer told Aftonbladet paper on Thursday.

An Iraqi immigrant to Sweden burned the Koran outside a Stockholm mosque last week, causing outrage in the Muslim world and condemnation from the pope. The Swedish Security services said such action left the country less safe.

Sweden's bid to join NATO after Russia's invasion of Ukraine has put it in the international spotlight, while a number of demonstrations at which protesters have burned copies of the Muslim holy book have angered Muslims around the world.

KYIV/STOCKHOLM, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Ukraine has begun discussing with Sweden the possibility of receiving Gripen jets to boost its air defences, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Saturday after meeting Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

Zelenskiy's visit is his first to Sweden since Russia's invasion in February 2022 and the talks about obtaining Gripen jets, which he cast as preliminary, follow approval from the United States for Denmark and the Netherlands to send F-16 fighters to Ukraine.

STOCKHOLM, Sept 1 (Reuters) - The Swedish foreign minister said on Friday he remained hopeful that Turkey will ratify Sweden's planned NATO membership when the Turkish parliament reconvenes in October, as agreed with President Tayyip Erdogan at a summit of the alliance in July.

"The Swedish government has not had any signals during the summer other than that the cards that were put down then are ones that are valid now in this question and that the statement given at Vilnius is still valid," Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom told reporters after meeting visiting members of the U.S. Congress.

ANKARA, Sept 10 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden's administration is linking F-16 fighter jet sales to Turkey with Turkish ratification of Sweden's NATO membership bid, and this "seriously upsets" Ankara, President Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday.

Addressing a press conference after a G20 summit in the Indian capital New Delhi, Erdogan said he had a "pull-aside" meeting with Biden on the sidelines of the gathering and they discussed the transfer of F-16s to Turkey.

Biden made a connection between the supply of F-16s and Turkish action in ratifying Sweden's application to join NATO, Erdogan said. "This approach seriously upsets us," he said.

Turkey, which had been the main stumbling block in Sweden's path towards NATO, asked in October 2021 to buy $20 billion worth of Lockheed Martin Corp's (LMT.N) F-16s and nearly 80 modernisation kits for its existing warplanes.

STOCKHOLM, Sept 15 (Reuters) - For months, Sweden's government has sought to play down a property crisis that has throttled confidence in the Nordic state, repeating a simple message: While some companies are in trouble, the country is not.

Now Heimstaden Bostad, a $30 billion property investor with swathes of homes from Stockholm to Berlin, is grappling with a multibillion dollar funding crunch, which has rebounded on one of its owners - the country's biggest pension fund.

That undoubtedly raises the stakes for Sweden, the European nation hardest hit by a global property rout triggered by the steep rise in interest rates last year that abruptly ended a decade of virtually free money.

Sweden is one of Europe's wealthiest states and the biggest Nordic economy, but it has an Achilles Heel - a property market where banks have lent more than 4 trillion Swedish crowns ($360 billion) to homeowners. Weighed down by these home loans, Swedes are twice as heavily indebted as Germans or Italians.

Two dead, including bystander, in gang-related shooting in Sweden

STOCKHOLM, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Two people were killed and two injured when a lone gunman opened fire at a restaurant in a small town in eastern Sweden late on Thursday, in what police said appeared to be part of an escalating spiral of violence among criminal gangs.

Sweden has been rocked by a wave of shootings and bombings in recent years that has intensified over the past few months to become an almost daily occurrence.

Police said one of the dead men, a man in his 70s, and the two injured people were probably bystanders at the restaurant in the small town of Sandviken, 190 kilometres (118 miles) north of Stockholm.

Police has said about 30,000 people in Sweden are directly involved with or have ties to gang crime. The violence has also spread from major urban areas to smaller towns where violent crime was previously a rare occurrence.

STOCKHOLM, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Sweden's prime minister summoned the head of the armed forces and the police commissioner in a bid to stem gang violence, he said on Thursday, following a wave of violence that has taken at least 11 lives in September alone.

Two people were killed in separate shootings in Stockholm on Wednesday, and a woman in her 20s, thought to be an innocent bystander, was killed when a bomb tore up a house in Uppsala in the early hours of Thursday.
