If he did, it would almost guarantee that he would never be able to earn any money ever again, and it would put an end to both his NASA contracts and his Mars program. Maybe once he's safe on Mars and out of the reach of authorities, he'll throw some money our way, or at least toward White South Africans. I'm not counting on it, but it's not inconceivable.

At least he's not some fanatic like Christopher Columbus, who planned his voyages for the specific purpose of capturing Jerusalem from the Muslims.

Tesla Says Autopilot Makes Its Cars Safer. Crash Victims Say It Kills.


A California family that lost a 15-year-old boy when a Tesla hit its pickup truck is suing the company, claiming its Autopilot system was partly responsible.

Benjamin Maldonado and his teenage son were driving back from a soccer tournament on a California freeway in August 2019 when a truck in front of them slowed. Mr. Maldonado flicked his turn signal and moved right. Within seconds, his Ford Explorer pickup was hit by a Tesla Model 3 that was traveling about 60 miles per hour on Autopilot.

A six-second video captured by the Tesla and data it recorded show that neither Autopilot — Tesla’s much-vaunted system that can steer, brake and accelerate a car on its own — nor the driver slowed the vehicle until a fraction of a second before the crash. Fifteen-year-old Jovani, who had been in the front passenger seat and not wearing his seatbelt, was thrown from the Ford and died, according to a police report.

The article is behind a paywall, so I was unable to read it. However, I will say this about the matter:

A car must either be self-driving or not self-driving. There is no in between. Just as there is nothing more dangerous than an unloaded weapon, there is nothing more dangerous than an "almost self-driving" car. If a car is not fully self-driving, then the driver must be alert and in control of the vehicle at all times.

There are many features that have the potential to make driving safer. Systems that warn the driver that he is veering out of his lane or that he is approaching the vehicle ahead to closely could make driving safer, provided that the driver does not rely on them. But when these warning systems get so good that the driver is tempted to stop paying attention to the road, even briefly, then a dangerous situation can develop.

I checked the Tesla website, and this is what it has to say:

All new Tesla cars have the hardware needed in the future for full self-driving in almost all circumstances. The system is designed to be able to conduct short and long distance trips with no action required by the person in the driver’s seat.

The future use of these features without supervision is dependent on achieving reliability far in excess of human drivers as demonstrated by billions of miles of experience, as well as regulatory approval, which may take longer in some jurisdictions. As these self-driving capabilities are introduced, your car will be continuously upgraded through over-the-air software updates.

So he calls the feature "Autopilot" but states that the car is not fully autonomous and requires "active driver supervision."

Although I have the greatest respect for Elon Musk, this is irresponsible. Anyone who buys the car and sees that it has a feature called "autopilot" can be expected to treat the car as if it were a self-driving car. The feature should have been given a different name, such as "Driver Assistant."

I can see what Musk is doing here. He is developing a fully self-driving car, which requires a lot of testing, so he is using his customers as testers. It sounds reasonable, but it is a terrible idea. I have learned from personal experience as a software developer that clients do not want to test your products. Even if you tell the client that he will be testing the product and put it in writing in the contract, the client still expects a fully functional, bug-free product from day one. Musk needs to hire professional drivers to test his self-driving cars before marketing them. I know it will slow down development, and it will put him at a disadvantage if his competitors don't follow suit, but it is the only responsible way to do it. I understand where he's coming from and why he's doing it, but it's just not responsible.

An after-hours tweet by Elon Musk got Twitter talking about TITS… that is, Texas Institute of Technology & Science, a new university proposed by the Tesla and SpaceX magnate with an eye on “epic” merchandise and brand recognition.

“Am thinking of starting [a] new university: Texas Institute of Technology & Science,” Musk tweeted in the early hours of Friday, adding that it would have “epic merch” and be “universally admired.”

Tesla shares have dropped over 4% in premarket trading on Tuesday, on course to lose some of last week’s $300 billion in gains, after CEO Elon Musk cast doubt on the massive potential deal with car-rental firm Hertz Global.

Last week, Hertz Global announced in a press release that it had placed “an initial order of 100,000 Teslas by the end of 2022.” Despite the indications in the announcement that the deal has not been signed and won’t be finalized until the end of 2022, the news sent Tesla shares soaring 13% on October 25, with the company surpassing $1 trillion in market value for the first time ever. The EV-maker’s stock kept climbing higher still in the following days, closing at a record high on Monday.

Tesla CEO and billionaire Elon Musk asked the public whether he should sell 10% of his stock in his electric car company, Tesla, promising to abide by the result in a move which shocked social media users.

In a tweet on Saturday, Musk asked his followers to vote either yes or no to the sale of the stocks, which are valued at around $21 billion.

“Much is made lately of unrealized gains being a means of tax avoidance, so I propose selling 10% of my Tesla stock. Do you support this?” he questioned, promising to “abide by the results of this poll, whichever way it goes.”

Musk – who is the world’s richest man with a net worth of over $318 billion – also claimed to “not take a cash salary or bonus from anywhere,” and explained, “thus the only way for me to pay taxes personally is to sell stock.”

Within just a few hours, over 1.3 million people voted in the poll, with the ‘yes’ faction holding a slight majority.

Simple math explains real reason for Musk’s Twitter poll on selling Tesla stock

Tesla CEO and billionaire Elon Musk asked his Twitter followers over the weekend if he should sell 10% of his Tesla holdings, and they said yes, but media reports claim he has to sell the stock soon regardless of the rhetoric.

According to a report by CNBC, Musk faces a $15 billion tax bill on stock options expiring next year, which is likely the real reason he considered selling 10% of his Tesla stock in the first place.

As Musk himself declared, he doesn’t take a salary or cash bonus from Tesla, thus his taxable wealth comes from stock awards and the gains in the company’s share price. Musk was awarded Tesla’s stock options back in 2012, which allows him to buy 22.86 million Tesla shares at the fixed price of only $6.24 each. As the company’s shares closed at $1,222.09 apiece last week, his gain on these options now totals just under $28 billion.

Musk’s stock options expire in August 2022, but in order to use them, he has to pay the income tax on the gain at a combined rate of 54.1%. Simple math shows that at the current price, his tax bill is around $15 billion.
