MADISON, Wis. - An 11-year-old boy who had pieced together his own bike was robbed of the bike by a group of armed teenagers, according to a release from Madison police.

Police said the boy was behind an apartment building on Northridge Terrace Wednesday night when three teens approached, one of them armed with a handgun. The armed robber put the gun to the boy’s head and demanded he turn over his bike, according to police.

Police said the boy had made the bike himself from donated parts with the help of volunteers at a community bike shop on South Park Street. It is a BMX-style, painted green, gray and red.

The reporting officer wrote, "It was clear (the child) was proud of his bicycle and his main concern was getting the bike back."

The armed robber is described as black, 15 years old, 5 feet 10 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall and wearing a red hooded sweatshirt.

MADISON, Wis. - The lock screen message on a stolen iPad helped police arrange a sting to arrest the suspected thief, police said.

Madison police said a 44-year-old west Madison resident's iPad Air was stolen Aug. 29 from a briefcase inside his car, which was parked in his Wimbledon Way garage.

The iPad owner had installed tracking software that enabled him to put a message on the iPad's locked screen, saying "This iPad was stolen and is being tracked. Please call this number if found. Reward will be given." The owner's phone number was also listed.

Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said the iPad owner got a call from a man who claimed to have purchased the $850 gadget for $80 from a friend.

"He had wanted the victim to give him the code so the screen could be unlocked, but the victim did not bite," DeSpain said.

The caller then asked about the reward money, and the two made arrangements to meet. Police said 22-year-old Darren T. Lanagan showed up at the Park Street McDonald's with the iPad Thursday shortly before 5 p.m. The iPad owner showed up, too, with police officers.

Lanagan told police he didn't know the iPad was stolen. He also said he didn't know the name of the man from whom he claimed to have made the purchase.

Lanagan was arrested on suspicion of receiving stolen property, bail jumping and possession of THC.

According to the report, Lanagan is homeless.
