Experts dismiss Belgium's 80% employment target by 2030 as 'unlikely'

Monday, 10 April 2023
By Nick Amies

Even if all the unemployed in Belgium are put back to work, it will probably be impossible to achieve the government’s 80% employment rate target in 2030, despite the assertion of Employment Minister Pierre-Yves Dermagne who says the target is "within reach."

Recently, the Belgian statistics office Statbel announced an employment rate of 71.9% on average for the year 2022, and even 72.3% for the fourth quarter of 2022, which shows a positive trend. To reach the 80% target, it would be necessary to increase both the number of people available for work and the number of jobs.

"It would be a question of gaining eight percentage points in eight years, since we must go from 72% in 2023 to 80% in 2030," Muriel Dejemeppe, professor of economics at UCLouvain told RTBF.

"In the last 20 years, there have been two periods in which the employment rate has risen sharply. First between 2003 and 2008, just before the financial crisis. We were in a period of strong economic growth with relatively significant job creation. We then gained 3.3 percentage points in five years, which is to say about 0.7% per year," she said.

Vlaams Belang and N-VA race to the bottom in anti-woke attack

Wednesday, 12 April 2023

Flanders' two separatist parties – rightwing N-VA and far-right Vlaams Belang – have seemingly been trying to one-up each other with so-called "anti-woke" discourse, which has now come to a head following the appointment of author Dalilla Hermans for a cultural function in the city of Bruges.

N-VA president Bart De Wever laid out his criticism of so-called "wokeism" in his new book – titled 'Over woke' ("About woke" in Dutch). In March, a fellow N-VA Antwerp city councillor insisted on the removal of four photos by renowned photographer Mous Lamrabat, which had been installed in the stairwell of the iconic Arenberg Theater.

Every person who has already gone to Charleroi knows that this is an enormous compliment to Fascism...

Mayor criticises Brussels government over rainbow zebra crossings

Saturday, 13 May 2023

The mayor of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre Benoît Cerexhe criticised the Region of Brussels-Capital’s decision to paint zebra crossings with the LGBTQ+ rainbow flag in his municipality in a Facebook post on Saturday.

Cerexhe went on Facebook to criticise the Brussels government on Saturday after noticing the overnight change to a crossing on the Montgomery roundabout.

He explained that his opposition had nothing to do with the rainbow flag being used for the Belgian Pride month in Brussels but rather that he did not believe that zebra crossings, with their primary purpose of providing pedestrians with safety, should be used to “support causes” of any kind. Cerexhe also argued that the crossings would now no longer be fully visible to the visually impaired.

Organisers expect over 150,000 people to take part in the Brussels Pride celebration on Saturday 20 May. The Pride Parade will start around 14:00 and will go through several streets in the city centre of Brussels, meaning traffic will be disrupted.

The local police recommend using the "park and ride" car parks, public transport and/or bikes to easily get around the city. Starting at 05:00 on Saturday, a few streets will be closed for the safety of the event. The police said the following sectors should be avoided: Boulevard de l’Empereur until Cantersteen, rue Saint-Jean, rue de l'Infante Isabelle and the Mont des Arts area.

Protestors come out in force in Brussels against compulsory sexual education

Friday, 8 September 2023
By The Brussels Times with Belga

Credit: Haro France/ Facebook

Several hundred people gathered to demonstrate on the Rue des Colonies in central Brussels on Thursday ahead of the plenary session of the Parliament of the French Community (the Wallonia-Brussels Federation).

The crowd was vociferous against a proposed sexual education policy that would result in all pupils in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation system undergoing regular educational activities (at least twice per year) relating to relationships, emotional and sexual life (EVRAS).

From the start of this school year, all pupils in 6th primary and 4th secondary will receive at least one class. This concerns 85,000 pupils in Wallonia and 25,000 pupils in Brussels.
(...)
Speaking on Thursday morning on La Première (RTBF), Education Minister Caroline Désir was keen to reassure families: "Our intentions are noble. We’re obviously not going to encourage hypersexualisation among young people, we’re not going to encourage sexual orientation or gender identity, we’re not going to give lessons in sexual practices. It’s unacceptable to frighten parents on this subject."

Alcohol is no excuse for racist remarks, Party president tells coalition partner Rousseau

Saturday, 7 October 2023

Drunkenness is no excuse for racist remarks, Cristen-Democratisch & Vlaams (CD&V) president Sammy Mahdi commented on Friday, following statements by his Vooruit counterpart Conner Rousseau.

Defending himself to the media on Thursday evening after being questioned by the federal judicial police in Ghent, the Flemish socialist had referred to his remarks, which targeted the Roma community, as "drunk talk."

"Alcohol allows a lot, but not putting racist and totalitarian thoughts into your mouth. 'Drunk talk' can in no way embellish ugly thoughts apparently waiting for a valve to come out," Mr.Mahdi said on Facebook.

'I stick to that point': De Croo defiant as Israel summons Belgian and Spanish ambassadors

Saturday, 25 November 2023
By Ugo Realfonzo

The Israeli Government will summon the ambassadors of both Belgium and Spain for "a harsh rebuke conversation" after their Prime Ministers' comments on the high death toll in Gaza during their diplomatic trip to the region.

Belgian and Spanish Prime Ministers Alexander De Croo and Pedro Sanchez travelled together to Israel and the Palestinian territories where they met officials on both sides, including the Israeli President and Prime Minister.

The key message delivered to the Israeli Government was that it needed to do more to end civilian casualties and help achieve a political solution to the crisis.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended his government's actions by claiming that if Hamas is not defeated "it will spread to Europe." He also likened attacks on Israel to thousands of rockets "falling on Barcelona, falling on Madrid, falling on Brussels, falling on Antwerp."

The conversation was described to the travelling press as "confrontational" by De Croo, with Netanyahu choosing not to face European journalists. Yet comments on de-escalation – the stated mission of the trip – have angered the Israeli Government.
