Ebola: the expulsion of illegal immigrants to three African countries suspended

France has stopped the deportation of illegal immigrants to the three countries most affected by Ebola: Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The Interior Ministry has confirmed that a written note was transmitted to the prefectures on October 13. The Ministry said it was merely a matter of "unofficial guidelines being made official".

The Ministry explained that the enforcement of removal orders had been suspended as was the case every time a serious crisis happened in a country. It is claimed in the Ministry that "the 'common sense' decision has been enforced for several weeks by the prefectures", as if that position had been clearly assumed from the beginning. [...]

What policies have been adopted by our European neighbors? A few weeks ago in Switzerland, in response to the OSAR (Swiss aid organization for refugees), the Federal Office for Migration said that no specific instructions had been given. Meanwhile in Belgium, the authorities announced this week that deportations to the affected countries have been stopped completely... so as so to avoid any contagion of the policemen escorting the undocumented immigrants.

Authorities in Sierra Leone said Sunday that another doctor there has tested positive for Ebola, marking a setback for efforts to keep desperately needed health care workers safe in the West African country ravaged by the deadly virus.

Government Chief Medical Officer Dr. Brima Kargbo confirmed on Sunday that a fifth doctor in Sierra Leone had tested positive. The other four all have died from the virus that has killed nearly 5,000 across West Africa.

The sick physician has been identified as Dr. Godfrey George, medical superintendent of Kambia Government Hospital in northern Sierra Leone. He was driven to the capital, Freetown, after reporting he wasn't feeling well.

Doctors and nurses have been the most vulnerable to contracting Ebola, as the virus is spread through bodily fluids. Some 523 health workers have contracted Ebola, and about half of them have died.

A patient is being tested for Ebola at a Belfast hospital, Northern Ireland's Public Health Agency has confirmed.

The unidentified man, who has travelled to West Africa recently, has already tested positive for malaria.

He has been at an isolation unit at the city's Royal Victoria Hospital since Friday.

Md. Doctor With Ebola Has Died In Neb. Treatment Center

OMAHA, Neb. (WJZ/AP)—The Maryland doctor who contracted Ebola while treating patients in Sierra Leone has died of the disease at a Nebraska treatment facility.

Nebraska Medical Center said in a news release that Dr. Martin Salia died as a result of the disease. Hospital spokesman Taylor Wilson said Salia died shortly after 4 a.m. Monday.

Salia, who was diagnosed with Ebola last Monday, arrived in Omaha on Saturday to be treated at the Nebraska Medical Center’s biocontainment unit that has successfully treated two other Ebola patients this fall.

“Dr. Salia was extremely critical when he arrived here, and unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we weren’t able to save him,” said Dr. Phil Smith, medical director of the biocontainment unit.

Doctors reported the 44-year-old as “extremely ill” on Sunday.

Ebola screenings clog Beitbridge border post

LONG queues are forming at SA’s busiest land border post at Beitbridge as the Department of Health has sent only one scanner to screen visitors for Ebola.

The department says it will not compromise on its Ebola surveillance, despite the fact that Zimbabwe has not reported a single case of the disease. But the border is not a high-risk region and it will not be increasing the number of scanners, even to improve efficiency.

High-risk regions are Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, which receive travellers coming from further afield who could have been exposed to the virus.

OR Tambo International Airport is particularly high risk, necessitating closer surveillance. But no incidents of Ebola have been reported there as yet, according to the department’s spokesman, Joe Maila.

The second-largest, second-deadliest Ebola outbreak in history has spread to a major city.

Butembo, a bustling city of almost a million people in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, is reporting an increasing number of cases of Ebola virus disease in the country's current epidemic. There has been a "significant increase" in infections there over the past three weeks, with a total of 25 confirmed cases thus far, according to Thursday's bulletin from the country's health ministry.

Butembo is a key trading and transport hub with links to other major cities in the country as well as to neighboring Uganda. It's about two times the size of the city of Beni, the outbreak's epicenter, and is located just 35 miles away.
