In the wake of the discovery of a National Socialist armed cell in Germany, the NSU, Berlin has once again been mulling efforts to get the far-right NPD party banned by the country's top court. Several months ago, Germany's federal states unanimously agreed to support a new legal attempt to ban the NPD, but the federal government has now decided not to support the bid.
Ten years ago, a similar bid failed; though it was supported by both the upper and lower house of parliament, the country's top court ruled it unconstitutional.
