Letalvis Cobbins found guilty of first-degree murder
The January 2007 carjacking, torture, rape and slayings of Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23, have left an impact on the lives of the victims' families.
But these crimes also have changed the Knoxville community. People have become more vigilant about their safety, more wary of unfamiliar places and more protective of their families.
The slayings of Christian and Newsom represent the typical "not in my town" crime. As a result, Knoxvillians have rallied together to show support for the families and, in that way, heal themselves.
Right. Because when a pack of feral animals attack this gorgeous young couple and tear them to bits it's the White kids fault for being in NIGGERTOWN? FY.

2 Badly Burned Bodies of White Couple Discovered on Detroit's Southwest Side
In an alley, a man who says he saw what led up to this and what came after, calling on us to tell the story. The smell of smoke making him wonder what was going on.
"There was two black guys that got out of it, and they [were] here for about ten minutes. They left, went down, came back and then stopped again and got out the car. I don't know what they [were] doing," he told us.
Investigators say the badly burned bodies are that of a white man and a white woman. We put the man that talked to us and didn't want to be identified in touch with the lead investigator in the case.

Gary and Deena Christian speak with media after torture-slaying defendants granted new trials
It's been nearly 5 years since their daughter and her boyfriend were kidnapped, raped, tortured and murdered on January 7, 2007. Gary and Deena Christian sat through the excruciating details of Chris and Channon's death four times at four different trials over the span of those years. In May of 2010, they thought it was over. On December 1, 2011, Judge Jon Kerry Blackwood granted new trials to each of the four defendants in the case due to former judge Richard Baumgartner's actions while on the bench.

Defendants in torture-slaying case granted new trials
Four defendants in the case of the torture and slaying of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom were granted new trials Dec. 1, 2011 by Judge Jon Kerry Blackwood. Blackwood ruled that former judge Richard Baumgartner did not exercise his role of 13th juror in that he did not sign off on the final verdict in any of the four trials (as well as many others). In addition to this, Blackwood listed a litany of crimes enacted by Baumgartner during the time of the initial trials including doctor shopping and falsifying drug test results for a woman he was seeing.
